Welcome to Extra Punctuation, a new video essay series from Yahtzee on The Escapist and edited by Matt Laughlin. New episodes drop every other Thursday. Get early access by watching on the website or joining RUclips Memberships to support the show!
I really like this series. Yahtzee's speaking voice is very relaxing.
Very good attention to detail. U could definitely sense the increased use of punctuation and pauses in this script. I like the contrast from Yatzee(?) 's normal content.
Super good, especially the part where I looked up from my phone at my unfolded laundry on my living room floor!!
I feel compelled to point out that there was a written series by Croshaw called the exact some thing just a few years ago. Perhaps it belies everyone's completely non-extant attention spans these days that a video is more digestable then, God forbid, reading.
@@ryanwhittaker7675 I mean, to be fair its an easy guess. Most of his viewers are gamers.
This is basically a dedicated series to lets all laugh at an industry (broader video game discussions by yahtzee not so much linked to current gaming releases) and im here for it
I noticed that, wondering if that means we won't get any more laughing-at-industries in the main series. Either way, good to get Extra Punctuation back. I like hearing Yahtzee's take on industry that don't have to be based on a single game review (or indie double)
...that never learns anything tee hee hee!
I'm glad about it if that was the case because we haven't laugh at the industry that never learn anything tee hee hee this year, but I'm really gonna miss the jingle.

After hearing Yahtzee speak incredibly quick in Zero Punctuation for YEARS, hearing him talk relatively subdued speed is actually really jarring.

It almost feels quieter
You should watch his dev diary

@@Renan3256 hahahaha this fix really does make it sound like ZP again
It’s like comparing Mickey Mouse to Buggs Bunny; Mickey makes a better t-shirt, but Buggs makes you laugh.
If Mario is Mickey then who is Buggs in this metaphor?
buggs bunny makes a decent enough t-shirt as well lol
Insects.
is that a kaptainkristian line? it sounds like one
The new Mickey cartoon was pretty funny precisely *because* they moved away from the hospital-sterile, perfect Mickey and gave him flaws, passions, ugliness, that sort of thing.
I will say, I have genuine sympathy for the writers who have to somehow find an actual film narrative for Mario. It's almost impressive how much *lore* exists within the Marioverse, but without actually having any story to speak of. Even most of the RPGs with something resembling a plotline are just baroqueing the usual "Princess gets kidnapped, plumbers go save her" setup with quirky characters and silly side quests. From a writing perspective, that's an adaptational nightmare.
On the other hand, there's been a lot of cutscenes in Mario games over the years which were clever and managed to work with no dialogue (like the Gamecube Tennis opening one). I was hoping the movie was going to be a feature length of that, but it probably won't be...
Honestly i trust them. It's either gonna be good or bad, heaven forbid the movie comes out mediocre. 🙏
The Escapist's previous attemps at sideshows next to Zero Punctuation haven't really been for me, but i really like this one. I like hearing Yahtzee talk. He's smart and funny. Really hard to find people with both of those qualities now days.
Yahtz actually did this for years, it was just published as blogs/articles on the Escapist website. He used to put one out with every ZP.
@@BrokeBob Looks like I got some reading to do then~

Judging By The Cover was fucking brilliant.
@@WAFilms-gv2en I started Dev Diary, but I'm way behind. This however feels like a good show since it makes a point.
Slightly civil war wasn't my thing because I don't like debates with fake opinions. I wanna see people argue for what they actually think instead of what they are pretending to think.
"I don't know what it takes to be social media popular these days but it apparently, it doesn't involve thinking very hard."
Yahtzee summarizing social media in one fell swoop.
To be fair if you're already popular you don't need to think hard to stay popular. Like, Yahtzee already has over a decade's worth of thinking that made him popular in the first place.
I'm pretty sure actual thought is forbidden.
Yup, what is popular on social media is thoughtless reactions.
@@Chepakishui makes sense since nobody cares about the new issue after 2 weeks

I'm sitting on a couch right next to a small pile of laundry that has been there waiting for me to take care of it for two days. Wow, he really does know his audience.
Nice show by the way.
Mario, Bowser, and Peach are in a polyamorous triad with a kidnapping and rescue kink. The three come up with everything on their downtime. Bowser and Mario figure out the "track", Bowser fills the track with obstacles and Peach supplies the power ups.
this is by far the most disturbing thing i've read in the last 24h
I don't whether to find this cute or uncomfortable.
Bowser and Mario are actually great friends and Peach allows herself to be kidnapped just so the two of them can spend some time together because, otherwise, they can't find the time of day for lunch or something
@@grandmagunsales2125 This sounds like Sonic 06
that just... makes sense?
The weirdest part is that Charles Martinet is confirmed to have supposedly multiple roles in the film, just not as mario or luigi. It comes off as patronizing to both him and the audience, a ceremonial olive branch so no one asks questions.
A friend of mine thinks that Charles will voice Jumpman, like he would be Mario’s dad or some shit like that. I just think it’s insulting to Charles that they would just do him like that.
Videogame Voice actors rarely have long speaking roles, so trying to do a whole movie with Mario's OG Voice probably won't turn out well.
This reminds me of the Uncharted movie where the OG voice actor of Nathan Drake makes a small cameo with Nathan Drake himself in the film, kinda funny looking back at it.
@@crimsondynamo615There's people on Twitter theorizing that he will voice an animated Mario for the Super Mario Bros. Plumbing and it'll cut to Chris Pratt's Mario saying "I did not sound like that at all." And it made so much sense considering how predictable the movie industry is nowadays
People seem to ignore the fact that Martinet is a talented voice actor that can do a new voice, like they could hire him and have him do a new Mario voice more appropriate for a movie
"They could make a historical drama about the crossing of the Delaware, stick a red hat on George Washington, and call it a Mario movie, and it would be just as true to the character as anything else."
There was an episode of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show that was kind of like that. Bowser (called Koopa back then) played the role of a Redcoat general or something. That cartoon was all kinds of weird.
This was actually pretty solid.
Completely agree.
goomba got back
Yeah, I was pretty surprised.
Hi Hi 0/
Hey Gaijin, this is OT, but are you ever going to take down the video you did with Chris Niosi?
More of this please. On literally all video game related content.
I love the call-out about the laundry going along with Yahtzee's running joke of calling us out on very specific things knowing that they will be true for quite a few people and give them a jolt.
Like saying "I like all of you... except for Gerald of course... He's a complete nob-end!"
I think the only thing anyone could add to Yatzhee's excellent take is this: Who among you actually, unironically, WANTS to see this movie? Who actually wants to watch the movie, not because of the potentially for a good ol' fashioned dunking of the out-of-touch executives' heads into the dumpster fire, but because you're genuinely interested in whatever story they come up with? Who really cares about this film in ANY capacity beyond the potential ironic enjoyment of a horrendous/bad/boring/ok (delete where appropriate upon release) joke of a film that no one asked for?
I can't wait to see it. Im sure it'll be a proper good movie. Don't be such a downer
My cousin is a big Nintendo fan and he was interested in seeing it back when it was confirmed but the cast hadn't come out yet. Other than that, I doubt anyone really wants to see it because we expect it to be good. But if it does turn out to be good, wouldn't that throw us all for a loop?
I'm actually pretty down to see the movie. A lot of it is actually due to the voice cast. As cynical as Yahtz is about Jack Black and Seth Rogen is about their respective roles, I genuinely can't think of anyone BUT Jack Black to be the voice of Bowser and I'm honestly excited to see what he'll do with the character.
I'm not really expecting it to be a banger of a movie. Nintendo's track record with adapting their IPs outside of the realm of games has been very spotty. But I am going in expecting to be entertained and whether it's good or bad, I feel like I'll still have a good time. Besides, if the movie actually turns out good, then everyone wins. Detective Pikachu was actually surprisingly stellar so if they have even a smidge of the dedication that went into that movie, we might get something worthwhile.
@@frostyblade8842 why and how? Given precedent its rare for video game movies to be anything above below average
@@frostyblade8842 I can feel the ironic energy coming off this comment.
Well, he addressed the point he made about no one really having an opinion. We all know that none of it matters.
Except maybe to Mr. Martinet.
Loved Extra Punctuation as a weekly essay column way back when, so I’m really glad to see it return in video essay format,
Also, I’d say snubbing Charles Martinet’s performance is less an example of Hollywood’s disrespect for video games as much as it is Hollywood’s disrespect for professional voice actors.
That said, Martinet was featured on the cast list alongside all the celebrity voices, and Nintendo is purported to be heavily involved in the movie’s production, so I’m sure they’ve probably got him coaching Chris Pratt on how to do the voice.
His voice as emmet combined with what Charles does could be what’s needed to make it work.
Considering I listened to this video while actually folding laundry, the ending coming right when I finished the last shirt made me laugh :D
I actually fucking forgot that my laundry is in the washer and yahtzee reminded me. Thanks mate.
Oh no, Yahtzee, _I_ won when I sat down to dedicate 5 minutes of my life to listening to you ramble on about the Super Mario movie. Because listening to your voice is its own reward.
To me, Mario shares the same cultural space as Mickey Mouse. They are both mascot characters of large corporations that are put into different roles and scenarios (Mickey being the Sorcerer's Apprentice, a Mousketeer, and a ship captain; Mario being an adventurer, golfer, and kart racer) thus making them more of a brand rather than a character.
Because Mario's entire existence is tied towards being a video game character, it makes any form of adaptation to any other medium a really tricky roll of the dice whether it works or not. Something like the Super Show worked because of the more basic and customizable idea of the 80's Mario games, but nowadays with such a gigantic and well defined set of rules in the Mario universe, it's harder to actually think about what a non-video game Mario experience would be like.
"At a certain point, characters stop needing their context to be whole and become their own context. The fun, then, comes from taking these characters and placing them in various different environments. In this way, fan fiction is the written evolution of childhood play" - Dan Olson on his RUclips channel "Folding Ideas"
Chris Pratt mentioned on Instagram that he and the team had been working on a voice, so I'm actually kinda intrigued as to if he's actually voice acting or not.
I don't hate Chris Pratt, but I always pronounce his name as Crisp Rat on purpose. I guess my sense of humor is just that bland which makes me a perfect audience for the Illumination Super Mario Movie.
I haven't really cared for him post Parks and Rec. He was perfect as a buffoonish side character. I don't understand the appeal to him as a lead.

This side segment deserved its own series, and I'm all for it!
And as much as it doesn't matter, Charles is due some proper respect, not the equivalent of a Stan Lee cameo.
Apparently he was asked about doing Mario for the movie but declined. Which isn't really surprising. Dude's getting old, and he may well not be up for doing a full movie's worth of dialogue. A movie is a lot more talking than the typical Mario game, after all. Having a smaller role may just be what he feels he can handle.
"So we're gonna do a Mario animated movie"
"Great! Let me call our voice actors"
"No no no, replace them all with Hollywood names we can slap on the posters"
it was the inevitable outcome when they chose to partner with illumination to do it
I like this format, I hope it keeps up! You're absolutely right about it not mattering what the film is about, especially to the Nintendo execs. People will go to see it just to see how much of a horrible dumpster fire it is, not because they think it'll be good. Also, fuck you about the laundry, I'll just get clean out of the basket like a goddamn animal
Our society has given up on movies or games making money by being good, or being art. As Neil Postman put it, "We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.
"But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.
"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us."
I love this format. Love hearing Yahts just go off on anything and everything. Would love to see more of this if that's his plan.
I think I've said this before somewhere, but the answer to a good Mario movie lies in the RPGs. Mario is at its PEAK when it embraces story and gets weird. Some surprisingly dark and heart-felt stuff goes on in those.
And that's not to mention the hilarious yet ironically accurate casting choices. Luigi as a squirrely nervous nut? Perfect for Charlie Day. Bowser as a blustering, self-congratulating goof? Perfect for Jack Black. And Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong is just hysterical, I'm expecting a good time from that one. Pratt is a good actor, and I think he knows the weight on his shoulders with this. He said on instagram he's working on a voice. And going off of Emmet from the Lego movie, I think Chris can pull off a cheerful, excitable vibe well.
I don't think the problem is the actors, I think any issues would be from the plot. Miyamoto seems very close to the production of this, so I'd be very shocked to see an utter betrayal of the Mario franchise.
Well, as the "video games industry" goes from the dumpster fire that was (7th Gen? 8th Gen?) to the full blown "video games merchandising and licensing industry;" it only makes sense to evolve the critical series as well. This isn't technically about a GAME, so it needs it's own can to dump in.
Good to see Yahtzee finally doing video essays. A lot of his EP articles would've gotten thousands of views by now if they had been RUclips videos. I remember when he theorized that the Star Wars Prequels might be appreciated more in the future based on how they'd compare to the Star Wars movies that come after. Flashforward to 2020, that's exactly what happened.
My laundry is already folded and put away, thank you very much.
Supposedly, Chris is "working on" what voice he's going to be using for the movie. I'd love it if he had the sort of disaffected Brooklyn accent Mario was often associated with in the 80's and 90's. But it wasn't actually made up of whole cloth either, it was briefly mentioned in the instruction manuals for Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. on the NES. Then promptly ignored and forgotten about internally until the internet age turned every musing Miyamoto had in any interview into new gospel that would cause an immediate schism.
Pretty sure that Mario and Luigi being from Brooklyn was never mentioned in the Japanese manuals, meaning that it was made up by Nintendo of America
I read him quoted as "Mario isn't Italian anymore. He's normal now." And had serious backlash.
@@commisso3806Miyamoto said in interviews that's how he originally thought of Mario, as a blue-collar New Yorker. Not specifically Brooklyn, but definitely New York.

@@emeraldnext After the Ape episode everything in the second season was objectively undeniably perfect
3:31 - Nailed it, that's EXACTLY what they did. First appearance of Mario he has the high-pitched Italian accent, then it's revealed we'd been watching a commercial for their plumbing business and Mario and Luigi sound like Chris Pratt and Chalie Day respectively.
5:06 - I mean, didn't that sort've happen in Mario's Time Machine?
No, wait, Mario just went back to learn about history like it was an episode of "This Is America, Charlie Brown."
I feel like Bob Hoskins could have been a live-action Mario that would have been actually good...
If the rest hadn't been shite.
Even that mad dead bastard as Bowser wasn't terrible casting for that film, but the rest was universally awful.
He only took the role because of his kids. He had no idea who Mario was.
@@NostraFnDamus Well it didn't help that the script was completely rewritten multiple times between when he auditioned and when the movie began shooting (and even then there were so many rewrites that Hoskins gave up trying to learn his lines beforehand because typically the script he'd be handed during shooting was different from the one the night before). The production of the movie was a complete sh-tshow, though I understand that Jurassic Park was being filmed right next door and the JP crew kept coming over to check out the Yoshi robot/animatronic.
Bob Hoskins was certainly *not* the problem with the live action Mario movie. In fact he was one of the few things I enjoyed about it.
I felt most of the actors in that movie were not bad actually (Hoskins and Hopper being the standouts), and damn if the production values and visual design were not impressive (and I still get a kick out of the Bob-Omb in the movie), but much like most adaptation-based movies of the time (the Spawn movie comes to mind) it was good material wasted on a lousy script and meh cinematography.
To be honest, I don't think that it is more the case of video games making bad movies, it is more the case were the people making the movies don't really care about the property they are making. Look at anime, and DC animations. They tend to be pretty good. The look at what happens when hollywood does it, immediate dumpster fire. I'm looking at you Dragon Ball...
My only issue with casting Chris Pratt is it's just another example of the film industry not hiring actual voice actors.
There are people who's entire job is to act using only their voice off screen and yet the film industry seems blind when it comes to using them and insists on hiring big name actors who might do the job fine when they could hire people who are actually trained for it. Even more so when it's a character with an established voice played by an established voice actor. Charles Martinet has played it for ages and all of a sudden when it comes to the big screen he gets put to one side for a shitty cameo. All the years and effort he's put into this character just to give it to someone else because they're popular.
Pratts already successful enough, give these roles to smaller people who have worked in anime and video games for years and let them have some spotlight.
For the record, my laundry has already been folded and put away.
Something that makes me not quite as interested in the Mario movie as the Sonic movie is that Mario really doesn't have an established identity. Sonic, for as bad as many of his games in the 2010's were, has a personality and character. He's a sarcastic smartass who enjoys sticking it to bullies while hiding a lot of wisdom about life within himself, because he simply wants to enjoy his life on his terms in his own way. His relationship with his villain Eggman is something that is established and explored, with Eggman's efforts of roboticizing the entire world under his rule being in complete contrast to Sonic's own personal desire for the freedom to do as he wishes.
Mario doesn't have that kinda interesting character depth. His cowardly brother who hunts ghosts has more potential as a protagonist than himself because Mario is meant to be a mascot. He's the video game equivalent of Mickey Mouse, just something that exists to market specific products to people who have an attachment to that specific character from their childhood. And none of that is inherently a terrible thing, it's all stuff that's done with every franchise. But I can't really imagine Mario being a movie character because he has no established identity outside of the bare minimum for a platformer protagonist.
ok, yahtzee's prediction for why he thinks they cast chris pratt is actually a pretty solid explanation that i would be totally down with
That last joke about the laundry hit hard as I was eating my dinner just looking my clothes that have been on the drying rack for four days now
More of this, please. Anything where Yahtzee gets to rant about video games is a must watch for me.
Is it sad that I would pay to see Super Mario Revolution? And No, I don't mean the Mario themed Dance Dance Revolution. Also, how did you know I had unfolded laundry?
I will disagree with the idea that Mario has a character. Enough character for a feature film? Debatable. But he has no refreshing and charming earnestness and positivity that makes him very pleasant to see and play as. People were thrown by Chris Pratt and the whole idea of an ironic and irreverent Illumination movie because that disrespects that earnest legacy Mario built up. I’ve seen the idea of a Wall-E style, mostly dialogueless Pixar movie being a good replacement, and I agree, but that potential just makes the lazy and corporate process that lead to Chris Pratt being Mario all the more disappointing.
I was really hoping for a dialogueless Wall-E thing too. In fact lots of Mario game cutscenes already pull off something like this well. But the movie industry only wants to make money anymore...
I'll have you know I was folding my laundry _during_ this video! How dare you!
I've loved this and am commenting in the hopes that more of this style of video essay will be released
I'd like to see a follow-up to this video with Yahtzee sharing his opinions on the movie now that it's out.
I disagree about Nintendo having “won” just because people are talking about a Mario movie. Just because a movie has a lot of pre-release buzz that’s easy to make jokes about doesn’t mean people will see it. Anyone remember “Snakes on a Plane”? That movie practically *invented* the meme and it bombed hard at the box office.
the super mario movie is probably not going to bomb on the box office tho, unless covid gets in its way

I disagree that Mario has no character. He has a very simple character, it's true, but we do know some stuff. Like, we know Mario isn't a coward (like Luigi) because he never runs away from a threat. We know that he's a hard worker because he never gets frustrated or upset even when convicted of a crime he didn't commit (in Sunshine). We know he cares about Princess Peach, because he always tries to rescue her no matter how many times he has to. The problem with Chris Pratt as casting is that Chris Pratt has a very distinct acting style of the "good-intentioned and lovably incompetent" character that is not right for a character who routinely fights a fire-breathing lizard ten times his size without fear or hesitation.
Tell that to his performance in "Her" and "Zero Dark Thirty"
@@lordasami Haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty but he's definitely still a lovable dweeb in Her. He just doesn't get as much screen time.
Star Trek Lower Decks is actually a huge celebration of the franchise full of references and deep pulls. I think a lot of movie adaptations are trying to do a similar sort of celebrating their topic rather than trying to be ironic about how silly it is, because ever since around like 10 years ago, sincerity has started winning the war against irony.

The folding laundry bit hit home. I'm currently watching this while drinking my morning coffee (at 11:30am) while putting off the mess I irresponsibly left in the kitchen last night during a drunken 1am munchie fest.
Yes, yes Yahtzee. I'll get my life together. Just as soon as I run out of youtube videos to watch.
So, I listened to this with the darkest dungeon 2 soundtrack playing softly in the background and the result is surprisingly ominous. Food for thought internet folks
As a person from Delaware, I'm very honored to finally hear yahtz name drop my homeland
wow that last part with the laundry hits home hard
Saving this to watch on lunch, bit I'll throw this little snack to the algorithm for now~
The casting of those actors reminds me of Billy West (Futurama) complaining about how Hollywood cares more about the name on the poster than genuine voice talent.
Thanks for bringing this back
Me and the basket of laundry at my feet feel personally attacked by this video. 🤣
5:10 Funnily enough there was an episode of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show that did a retelling of Washington crossing the Delaware.
I really enjoyed the original EXTRA PUNCTUATION written essays; so cool to see it come back in video format. :)
That ending was really funny. I wish I had an ornery funny friend in my life like you!
Extra punctuation is back! I have been a fan since it was in written essay form
Okay that laundry joke was just uncalled for... Also, how long has Yahtzee had a spy camera in my house?
Like any 5 year old with divorced parents I figured it went like this.
Bowser: He's found us.
Peach: Just have Toad tell him I'm in another castle. Now, where were we.
you are the death of video game comedy

there it is, Yahtzee managed to sum up social media
I love these videos because they actually feel like part of the core brand. These aren’t behind-the-scenes or unscripted conversations between industry experts, they’re expertly written and voiceoverified animated short films, just like ZP has always been.
Every one I’ve seen so far has presented fascinating and valid points that have never even occurred to me. These videos feel vibrant and incisive and relevant. I hope he makes a hundred of them.
My ideal Mario Bros movie would be the curtain opening, this movie happens, curtain closes, and Mario and friends come out in their original voices thanking the audience for watching their latest production.
this was a great video, fantastic and original perspective.
I remember when Extra Punctuation was just a series of blog posts with Yahtzee's extra opinions on his videos on the old Escapist website. Now it's a full on video series? Nice
great format!!
YOU TAKE THAT BACK MY LAUNDY HAS ONLY BEEN HERE A FEW WEEKS OK??
Thank you for reminding me that I had laundry to do. 😂
The last par of folding laundry. Mine is still hanging XD
Better do it now.
5:33 jokes on you! I just did the Landry
Funny thing is that it was listening to this while folding my laundry.
I was literally folding my laundry while watching this and I need the internet to know.
You have no idea how much laundry I've folded while listening to you over the years.
I was folding my laundry as I watched this, thank you very much!
The Olympic torch explanation is now my favorite explanation
