Love you Lawson

    I totally get the excitement of catching a new species using a different method, and yes, sheepshead are very under rated, both as fighters and as table fare. My buddy who recently got into fly fishing just got his first redfish on fly using a shrimp fly that he tied himself. I might tell him to send you a few of his flies if you're interested. Some of the local shops started selling his stuff, and you would get him more exposure than either of our tiny channels ever will.

    Couldn't agree more with how fun it is to just plain outsmart a target that is a worthy adversary. Especially on the fly.

    Love the vids Lawson, bummer you were sick. Ya know what sparked me about this video, at about 14 minutes you say you start to have fewer firsts....I have only been fishing for about 9 months so everything is so new to me, kind of glad I found this sport later in life. I just got my first largemouth bass yesterday, freaking STOKED! Props on the fly sheep, I am definitely going to try fly fishing one of these days.

      Good for you brother! Welcome to the family (fishermen)! Warning, this past time is addicting. I'm 46, been fishing for 40 years. No joke, I have the pics to prove it! Enjoy my friend! And help us conserve what we have. Oh, and luck is better then skill any day, but practice doesn't hurt!!!!

      Spot on about the firsts, my latest is clown knife fish on lures and landed six in two hours a few weeks ago. It never gets old, just not as new. Another old timer here, born in Key West living in Palm Beach so fishing for sixty years and work no longer gets in the way. I used spinning rods only (except for some conventional rods deep sea) up until three years ago but now use mostly bait casters and lately some BFS. That added a whole new feel so no worries, you will never run out of firsts.

  • @RadReelingFishing
    @RadReelingFishing 5 лет назад +7

    I totally understand the excitement. It's just not normal to catch a sheepshead on artificial. What about a lure for the fly rod that looks like a crab? Great video.

    • @adamsmith4670
      @adamsmith4670 5 лет назад

      Rad Reeling Fishing do you mean a crab pattern fly

    • @RadReelingFishing
      @RadReelingFishing 5 лет назад

      @@adamsmith4670 Thanks for asking Adam. No. Just google search "fiddler crab lure". If you then click on Google's option on the result page for "shopping" you'll see a very large selection of different company brands small crabs. I think I'd go with Gulp lures because they are usually scented. From what I hear Redfish like the scented soft plastics.

    Any kind of fishing is amazingly fun but catching a fish on a fly is so much more challenging, I find anyway. I live in the Rocky Mountains in Canada and when you hook in to a big Rainbow, Brown, Cutthroat or Bull trout on a light setup trying to figure out what they're eating is so satisfying. I can't tell you how many times I've been skunked using a particular fly then switch sizes but use the exact same pattern and then all hell breaks lose. It's really strange and cool how specific and precise you have to be when choosing flies..

    A little tip for on the fly strikes dont lift your rod and "Trout set" strip strike. I know I do it a lot too but strip striking you will hook them so much more often.

    You mentioned that the D.O.A. shrimp are a little too large. They make a 2", a 2 3/4", a 3", a 4" & a 6" now. The old standard 3" is a bit large for some fish, but the 2" & 2 3/4" are really good for fish with small mouths.

    With the shrimp fly, I find it that fish like it dead sticked with just the tiniest bit of movement as if the shrimp is digging into the sand to get away as this is a common defence strategy for them.

    Great video. And yes to enjoy the moment there and then is what makes fishing so enjoyable. Not always the biggest fish that is the best, but the specie you are catching. I am often trying to get new species instead of fishing for the same species the whole time, and often with fly or with ul equipment. By the way, what kind of flyrod/reel are you using. I use Thomas & Thomas rods, and Lawson reels.
    Keep up the good work. Always great to see your videos.
