    That little lip you are talking about on the top ring is not to make it easier to put on, it goes UP so that the air or compression goes behind the ring and forces the ring out against the wall for a better seal against the cylinder wall when the piston is travelling up.

  • @glennspeeds
    @glennspeeds 6 лет назад +3

    Invest in a piston ring expander. You are making a permanent twist on the piston rings that will affect them sealing. That little chamfer on the top piston ring goes up. It helps the compression get behind the piston ring to make it expand out.

    dude the last compression ring has a lip and should be facing up! because when the compression stroke happen that lip act actuator during pressure to seal tight against cylinder wall .

    Some of the best mechanics are ones that never went to school, they learned hands on in their own garage,trial and error. When you've been repairing and rebuilding engines over a decade you do alot of research..in my book that's better then a text book schooling.
    And I have not gone to school, but no schooling and never studied for a Master ASE Certified Technician test" I took the study guide which has about 16 tests and has all A,B & C test and I scored a 89.7 without studying.

    hi there i have a question so the two bottom rings opening suppose to sit opposite way rite? how bout the two rings that u put on last do u set the opening opposite also? thanks

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 10 лет назад

      I will tell you since no one responded. All rings should have the opening facing in different directions and never in a straight line for the same reason he said on the video. bottom oil ring face 12 o'clock top oil ring face 6 o'clock oil scrapping ring face 3 o'clock and compression ring face 9 o'clock. That should set you up fairly good.
      Oh and never face the place where the mesh joins at any of those openings. That last part about the mesh is just my opinion. I haven't heard anyone say anything about it but it makes sense in my mind.

    Will it work by hand? sure. As an inexperienced engine builder, I've done it in the past and it worked for the couple thousand miles I drove the car. Is this the correct way? absolutely not. piston ring installation pliers are only 10 bucks on Amazon, and $35 for Snap-on. Well worth it to ensure the rings will seat correctly on the piston grooves. Something you can't see by the naked eye. Also for the most part the groove in the top ring is for the combustion gasses to push the ring down. You have it upside down, it should be facing the combustion chamber.

    great video! question if you have new rings, is there a way to broke in your new rings? after a new rebuild engine.,

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 10 лет назад

      Prime the oil pump by cranking engine without fuel pump fuse in. Then crank her over and wait until to operating temp. Then take car on a light easy drive for around 100 miles. Come home change oil. Run again for another 100 miles. Come home and change oil again.
      Everything new should be broken in.
      Be very light on the engine when breaking it in.
      3 oil changes is to get any metal particles out that the break in process may have shaved off. There is nothing special about new rings they follow the same break in.
      Also use plenty of assembly lube when putting everything in except on bearing to journal surfaces. Those need to stay a little rough like the cylinder wall so your bearings don't spin around in a circle.
      Lots of stuff to think about on a engine rebuild.

  • @powermos
    @powermos 10 лет назад +3

    You never twist a ring! You will deform it and it will not spin freely while the engine is running. Then you will have a stuck ring, and you have to change it again pretty soon. You actually have to pull it out, and no you are not going to break it that way, not if you are using ring pliers.

    clocking the end gaps is necessary to avoid blow by on the first start up, the cross hatch on the cylinder walls causes the ring to rotate a little bit, two strokes are pinned so the ring doesnt catch on the port and break, by the way the barrel face top ring like in a honda seals better and thier is less ridge build up in the top egde of the cylinder

  • @jimmydelaroca459
    @jimmydelaroca459 10 лет назад

    At 4:34 you are bending piston ring most manufacturer's like 'Cummins' put a note in ring instalation procedure that you CAN NOT bend piston rings like that - use only piston rings plyers then piston ring in its groove will be straight.

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 10 лет назад +2

      He is depending on the cylinder wall to square up the rings once the piston is installed.
      They mean that a kink cannot be put in the ring. Doing it this way will not kink the ring and is one of the many ways this has been done.
      Ring spreaders were used back when the rings had a lot of tension to them. Now manufacturers have gone to low tension rings in around 1985. The idea of the tool was that it was needed because opening the higher tension rings were almost impossible by hand. We all just continued using a dated tool.
      Not to mention I have seen spreaders snap a new ring because when opening spring steel up and not giving any side play at all the force is being place to the rear of the ring and sometimes can snap the ring. Not a happy feeling.
      Doing it this way eliminates snapping the ring.

    I'd put money on that I would stretch a ring less then with a "ring tool",by the time the ring tool get's the ring open enough to compensate for it's own indention's in the tool,you've nearly stretched the ring more then double without the tool.

  • @tomashton7208
    @tomashton7208 10 лет назад

    as for ring clocking, the top ring gap can be at 2 oclock and the scond ring at 8, the front of the engine can be 6 oclock, the deal is you dont wont any ring gap over the wrist pin hole as for the rings for the oil control one ring can be at 10 oclock and the other at 4 and the end gap for the wavy ring at 8 oclock or 2 o clock setting the ring ends at 3 or 6, oclock are the thrust sides and is not a good idea

    Hey buddy ive worked at KSUS or Kolbenschmidt KSPG Automotive one of the top piston mfrs. in the US. And i can assure you and everyone watching that all of them rings are now completely out of spec. NEVER USE YOUR HANDS TO INSERT NI-RINGs OR EXPANDERS! No tools = near future problems. But its up to vewier to make their choice, Im just alil mfr. advice on proper protocol.

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 10 лет назад +1

      The spreader is a dated tool.
      When approaching re-ringing a piston you have to make the decision on how you install them based on the rings you are using. Many factors play a role in how you go about doing it.
      These rings are obviously low tension rings and not the higher tension rings the spreader was designed for. Now if he had his ring guides widened and chose to use thicker rings then yeah I doubt he would be able to install them without a spreader. These flimsy stock rings are just fine to install that way since he is depending on the cylinder wall to square things up for him. They will be within spec once the piston is inside the cylinder.
      I have seen those spreaders snap the low tension rings. Not a great feeling when using a tool everyone says was designed for the job.
      I'm not saying your wrong to use a tool to install them I am just saying there are many factors to consider before you choose the way your gonna install them.

      +Vince Leonard Pistons don't go into the cylinder head, they go into the block. Unless there is some type of engine I've never heard of where everything is ass backwards? Look on Amazon for a piston ring compressor. This tool fits around your piston and rings then you tighten it which will compress your rings, then you put it into the cylinder. Make sure to put some rubber or plastic tubing on ends of the rod so you don't scratch your cylinder walls. Once it's lined up with the cylinder use a plastic hammer or a piece of wood and a normal hammer and lightly tap in the piston.

    If only you knew what you are talking about it would be a bit safer for people reading this stuff all over the world to do things in the right manner.

      Smells like "N"othing 😁. The letter "N" stands for Nippon. That's the piston ring brand.

    If you are building an engine and you don't have simple cheap tools like ring priers you shouldn't be building it in the first place.

      The pliers were for high tension rings which haven't really been used in mass produced engines since the 80's. You only need them if you have your ring guide widened for thicker rings.
      The low tension rings he is using would result in him snapping at least one using the pliers.
      He is depending on the cylinder wall to square it up for him once the piston is installed and is an acceptable method when doing these types of rings.

    just be careful putting rings on the piston. ring expanding tool is really good to have but not exactly mandatory.if by any means it feels like a struggle what so ever getting that ring on the piston buy a tool.

    Rumpelstilskin, pay attention this is accurate information. He is telling you the truth buddy. 4 real. I hav tore down and reassemble many engines , his imfo is correct.

      If you think that this info is correct you must be on something it doesn't matter how many engines you have worked on if you do it wrong 1 time or 50 times it's still wrong
