It's crazy how this is NOT made clear in PCIE device details and marketing material. I look for ages for a PCIE x16 to PCIE x1 adapter, only to find you don't need one! :D
Awesome video! Answered everything I came for. Turns out the pcie usb board I bought to connect multiple camera's/mic in was a 1x Lane only, which explains why my usb devices kept disconnecting. For anyone that has the same issue make sure you buy a card that has dedicated bus channels for each usb port, most if not all cheaper boards run on 1 or 2 unfortunately. Something I learnt the hard way but so grateful that I now know. Thank you once again Tao for a great video :)
Thank you! I am building a new computer in a couple of weeks and have a small PCIe x1 WiFi card, but the smaller x1 slot on my motherboard will likely be blocked by my gpu card, and I came to see if the WiFi card I have would work on the other x16 lane slot that wouldn’t be blocked.
Walker Guy It works. If the card fits in the slot it’ll run and run just fine. I’ve got a 1660ti in my top slot (the x16), and it covers the smallest slot, so I put my WiFi card in the bottom big slot (16x1 or something) and I can’t tell a difference. I play online and all that without a hitch! So yeah, give it a go!
You just gained yourself a sub.I was looking everywhere for this video.I have the pci e 8 slot and I wasn’t for sure it would work in a 16 pcie slot.It was the 8 slot one that you didn’t have on hand, but you did answer my question! Thanks
Thank you so much for explaining that I just got one of these star Tec cards with 3.1 slots and was like what the fuc where I put it and now it makes more sense thank you for explaining this
Thank you, I've been trying to find out if there was any reason to sacrifice a x16 slot for an x1 USB 3.0 header expansion card for performance reasons. You are the only one who straight answered the question!
Thank you for sharing. This is very helpful in choosing a Motherboard. In particular, I recently have a doubt to pick the gigabyte b550 vision d because it only had pci16. But this video is just damn helpful.
There are PCIe x16 over x1 slots - the J1900m MB I have has one of these and I was looking if I could install an x8 SAS/SATA card in it and, thanks to you, now I know that I can.
THANK YOU MR TAO! Me and my wife were building pc, got headache with a couple of pcie accessories. Never knew we could use the x16 slot with x1 accessory 🤦♂🤦
You have no idea how much this helped me out for my pc build!!!! Thank you for the explanation Mr Tao. Now i can put my wifi card to the 16 lane slot. Cos my gpu was too bigggg haha! Cheers!!
Hi i have a gpu that covers my 2x pcie slot which I need for my network or wifi adapter but i have an extra 16x slot would it work if put my 2x network adapter there
This is old but I would like to thank you anyway because I currently have a 16 x Riser cable and a Sound Blaster zxr sound card which is a 1 X PCIe slot and I thought I had to order a different cable and have had no sound for the last 3 days. Saw this video and immediately just plugged my zxr sound card into the 16 x Riser cable and boom I have sound. Thanks again!
Very useful thank you! my upgraded graphics card covered up my pcie 4 lane. i just wanted to check before i ruin my motherboard or wifi card! thank you for your video ! 😊
Thank you for the presentation. I exactly now would buy a Asus Lan Network card. But I wasn't sure that work the X4 Interface on the X16 slot. (My Motherboard is a ASUS B250F. )
Thanks for confirming this! i am building a PC with multiple x4 HDMI capture card and quite confused with today's motherboard selection which very limited in actual x4 or x1 slot..until i think the shape of the connector is similar to a x16 graphic card..i wonder if it will work with motherboard with many graphic card slot, and then stumble upon your video!
yes they are all backward compatible. a pcie x1 device will work in any slot bigger... to get an x16 slot card on a x1 slot you use an adapter that all the crypto mining rigs use.
Hello Tao M Studio, thank you for your clear presentation of showing us on PCIe X 1, X4, X8, X16 could actually be slotted in to a PCIe X 16 Bus Slot in the mother board. I do have a question to ask, in this case, if I have a PCIe X 4 slot, does it also mean that a PCIe X 1 slot could be slotted inside it as well? || I believe you could do a video on PCIe X 4 + EVO 970 NVMe M.2 SSD, as I think this is going to be the new massive upgrade.
I have a wifi card that is PCIe x1. I had plugged it into the PCIe x1 slot in the motherboard, but it stays right in front of the graphics card fans, compromising it's cooling. I was thinking of moving it to the second x16, which is available and farther from the gpu, giving it more room to breath. So it's totally ok? Wont affect the wifi card permormance at all?
Thanks for the explanation. I have few questions. Is this applicable only for GPUs? Can I use x1 sound card on x16 slot? Will there be any performance factor on using x1 sound card on x16 slot?
Great video!! Question tho, how do I know if my card is compatible with my motherboard? I plugged it in and does not even show up as an unrecognized device
could be explained in 1 minute. PCI-e X16 downwards compatible to all PCI-e Slots because the limitation are the "pins". If it fits it works like cats.
I cannot believe I've built computers for myself and friends for a literal decade and never knew this. Thank you Tao!
This has to be the best explanation of anything EVER! Especially with a visual of different types of PCI cards.
It's crazy how this is NOT made clear in PCIE device details and marketing material. I look for ages for a PCIE x16 to PCIE x1 adapter, only to find you don't need one! :D
Me too!
Same, except i use a micro-atx board, so there wouldn't be enough space to put something in the second pcie x16 slot anyway.
Me too
@@a1rg3ar31 may I know what case you have?
Been looking all over for this info, Thank You!
+1

Adrian M Beardsong same lol
Wait so did it work I’m running into the same issue

i was having the same thought and end up here lol
Glad you guys found it useful 👍
Thank you! Now I don't have to worry to put a PCI-E 1x to a 16x slot
This is one of the best videos for learning about the PCIe interface, enjoyed watching it!
You just gained yourself a sub.I was looking everywhere for this video.I have the pci e 8 slot and I wasn’t for sure it would work in a 16 pcie slot.It was the 8 slot one that you didn’t have on hand, but you did answer my question! Thanks
Great job explaining the differences in the PCIe.
thankyou sir, now i can setup 1x pcie wifi card on the x16 pcie slot
You’re a godsend. I bought a WIfI PCIE adapter but I found out my 2060 covered it so I wanted to know if I could use the 16x slot instead
oof
Same here bro
Same here bro
Littering the exact same problem 🤣
This answered the EXACT question I was looking to answer. Thank you so much!
You rock buddy! Thank you so much!
Thanks hon ❤ got a network/bluetooth pcie 1x card,now I know it will work in a 8x express subbed :)
Very well explained. It certainly cannot get better than this. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for explaining that I just got one of these star Tec cards with 3.1 slots and was like what the fuc where I put it and now it makes more sense thank you for explaining this
lol just bought one and im here too lol, speaking of any issues with it down the road?
thanks for the info I have been looking for months I am not interested in speed just using it in a 16 x you have a great video thanks again
🙏
Excellent lesson on PCIe x16 thru x1 slots, the bus and the limiting factors of the cards - not the MB.
Thank you good sir!
Thank you, I've been trying to find out if there was any reason to sacrifice a x16 slot for an x1 USB 3.0 header expansion card for performance reasons. You are the only one who straight answered the question!
5 years later and you answered a question i needed, thank you sir
Glad I could help!
so, I can put a 10gb Network card in a 16x slot? my 4080 covers my regular 8x slot....
Thank you for sharing. This is very helpful in choosing a Motherboard. In particular, I recently have a doubt to pick the gigabyte b550 vision d because it only had pci16. But this video is just damn helpful.

I was panicking because the B650 Aorus motherboard I purchased only had x16 lanes and I couldn't plug in my x1 lane soundcard. Great video.
Glad I could help
THANK YOU MR TAO! Me and my wife were building pc, got headache with a couple of pcie accessories. Never knew we could use the x16 slot with x1 accessory 🤦♂🤦
I've built high end gaming PCs for my personal use for years and I didn't know this... My mind is blown
You have no idea how much this helped me out for my pc build!!!! Thank you for the explanation Mr Tao. Now i can put my wifi card to the 16 lane slot. Cos my gpu was too bigggg haha! Cheers!!
@ Asyraf Salam
Glad I could help!
Thank very much for the video, I was not sure but the demonstration gave me the answer😊 I bought a mother board with on x16 slots
Very little information out there regarding this straight-ahead question. Thanks for clarifying.
hey man thanks alot for the video!
Saved me $20 on buying a x1 riser. Had a free x16 and I didn’t know I could populate that slot with a one lane card.
Hi i have a gpu that covers my 2x pcie slot which I need for my network or wifi adapter but i have an extra 16x slot would it work if put my 2x network adapter there

Thank you! This video helped me understand the interfaces better.
Just what i needed to know. Kudos to you and your channel!
3:36 There you go! Thank you for flipping it. Much clearer.
Then you Tao!! This video is still helping computer noobs 5 years later!!!
Thank you so much for explaining this. A real life saver!

Just the information
I was looking for. Thank you!
@ Mikołaj Lis 👍
thank you i am going to get a LAN card but it has pcie x1 but i didn't know if i could put it in a pcie x16 slot. Now i know i can
Cheers. You gave me the confidence to keep pushing harder. :)
This video was very informative.
Currently looking to upgrade my video card, and some of my options include x8 cards and my MOBO only has a x16 slot.
I can confirm the 950 will work in a X4 PCI Express slot.
we know this not from scientific experimentation, but because I am a moron.
Very useful thank you! my upgraded graphics card covered up my pcie 4 lane. i just wanted to check before i ruin my motherboard or wifi card! thank you for your video ! 😊
Glad it helped
I'm just lazy to read the blog /article thus end up with this video.nice explanation Tao m!thanks
Glad it helped
Thank you for making this video. You answered my question!
Great video, exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks so much. It’s the video I am looking for 🎉
Thank you for the presentation.
I exactly now would buy a Asus Lan Network card.
But I wasn't sure that work the X4 Interface on the X16 slot.
(My Motherboard is a ASUS B250F. )
Although now is 2021, it's helpful to me! Great! Thank you.
thanks very useful for future motherboard upgrade for my ASUS Xonar STX soundcard PCIe x1
Thanks a lot that cleared my doubt, now i can go on go for my build
very usefull your video I am looking for this explanation for several days thank
x16 is both lanes and form factor, you use them interchangeably but it would be good to disambiguate

Thank you, I knew this to be true, but doubted myself, and all the people on the internet confused me more.
@bike goddess 👍
I totally didn't know that! Thank you so much!
You are welcome

Same i got a 1660 ti and its blocking that pci 🤣
My 2060 was blocking the 1x slot so I’m glad I found this video
Very Helpful, Thank You!
Video under rated. Smash that like button!!
Very informative video. Thanks!

Hi there. Just a question. Will a pci 3.0 x4 installed in a pcie 2.0 x16 work as a 3.0x4 or as 2.0x4? In terms of bandwidth
@IntoTheVortex 2.0 x4
Good explanation. Thank you
Is PCIEXP J41 different from the standard PCI express?
Does it slow down the other cards plugged in at the same time?
Thank you so much. You helped me a lot
Very helpful, thanks!
very informative! thanks
could be explained in 1 minute.
PCI-e X16 downwards compatible to all PCI-e Slots because the limitation are the "pins". If it fits it works like cats.
Summary: yes you can put any PCIe interfaces into PCIe 16x slot (ofc, as long as its not bigger than X16)
4:32 putting it in
Nice video, thanks !
