Creating Demographic information in NVivo

  • In this tutorial, we explore how to input demographic data into NVivo software. Starting with a fresh project, 'Project C', transcripts are first uploaded. Before incorporating demographic data, it's essential to create a case for each participant or transcript. Demographic data can be imported directly from an Excel sheet, ensuring participant IDs match the transcript labels. Alternatively, demographic details can be entered manually in NVivo. This involves creating a container titled 'participant demographics', then adding attributes like age and gender. For predefined categories like gender, set values can be added for convenience. It's crucial to connect participant files to demographics by assigning them to the right classification. This tutorial highlights the flexibility and precision NVivo offers in handling research data. Questions are welcome in the comments section.

Thank you for clear explanation. If I have 7 FDGs with total participants of 22, how do I assign the case and put the attribute to them. Thanks

Thank you for your question! To assign cases and attributes for your participants, the process depends on how you organize the data. Since you have 7 focus group discussions (FGDs) with a total of 22 participants, here's what I recommend:
Create a file for each FGD: Instead of creating a file for each participant (which can be challenging in focus group settings), create one file for each of the 7 FGDs. This means you'll have 7 files, each representing one FGD.
Assign cases to the FGDs: Each FGD will be treated as a single case. For instance, you can name the cases FGD1, FGD2, and so on.
Define collective attributes: Since individual-level attributes (e.g., gender, age, role) might be difficult to assign for each participant in a focus group, you can assign collective attributes to each case. For example, attributes like "Group Size," "Location," or "Topic" can be applied to each FGD file.
By organizing your data in this way, you maintain the structure of the FGDs while enabling case- and attribute-level analysis.

@@drphilipadu Thank you. Since my project file have both interviews and FGDs, the attribute for each approach is different then, is that right?

Please explain how partcipants' ID added directly to the attributes list without you doing it. Mine does not

Thanks for the video. With option 2, will Nvivo autogenerate the demo data from the imported transcript after the set up? Or need to enter that manually?

You're welcome! For option 2, you need to enter the demographics manually.

Hello, and thanks again Dr Adu - a few roadblocks I've run into (using nvivo for mac): 1) I can only upload CSV files for the classification (and then can't specify the cases as names, only hierarchical names). 2) once I have created my classifications using the csv file, and they are connected to the associated cases, they don't seem to be connected to the associated files (or perhaps the cases are missing some connection with the original files, as the codes for the files also aren't appearing in the case folders?)

@@drphilipadu Thank you so much! I see that some of this is down to the mac platform. However, after following the video step by step, I'm running into the same issue - the attributes information is not being associated with the files. When I run a query involving cases or files and codes, it comes up with info. When I run a query involving attributes and codes, it comes up with nothing. have you come across this before?

You are doing great. Sorry, I have to ask about themes here. During clustering of the codes to form themes, what happens where a code is common to all clusters?

    • @drphilipadu
      @drphilipadu  7 месяцев назад

No problem! Thank you!! It's common, I normally put it to where it is most related to the rest of the codes in a cluster.

You can right-click on the table in NVivo and select 'Expert Classification Sheet' to export.

Hi, I have concerns about whether to use Nvivo or not. I have collected a variety of data about heritage sites that need to be analyzed for a competitive analysis among different sites. However, I'm not sure if it requires specific software, or if I can simply use Excel. The dataset is not extensive and can be managed in different ways. What's your opinion on this?

    • @drphilipadu

I this is a qualitative data then NVivo would be the best. Alternatively, you could use ai tools such as Claude.ai or ChatGPT to explore the data.

Hi Philip, can you please help me how to create demographic information for FGD on NVivo. Thank you

We normally don't create demographic information on NVivo unless you have transcript (i.e. file) for each participant.
