- The speaker is demonstrating how to use a tool like NVivo to create visual representations of findings. The steps include developing a project map, creating a word cloud, and using a framework metric. To show participants that are connected to a specific theme, one can use the MAP function under Explore, and then click on Project Map. The speaker demonstrates how to add a theme to the map and show associated items like participants and their demographic characteristics. The map can be rearranged using the layout function. This information is useful for presenting findings and telling a story.

Dr. Adu, thank you! This video has confirmed that using Excel for coding and thematic analysis is less complicated and doesn't require learning NVivo. Using Excel is beneficial for students needing to complete assignments within a two-week timeframe. According to the literature, learning NVivo demands a significant time investment. I attempted to learn it twice, but found it to be overwhelming and the back-and-forth between NVivo, Excel and Word is too much time. I'm utilizing Excel, with a separate tab dedicated to each research question. Each tab contains the research question's title, a column listing participants from P1 to the end, and columns for code, category, and theme. So far, this approach has been effective. I've conducted 21 interviews and this work continues. I think learning NVivo is important but students may not have lots of time.
Ahmed, I appreciate you sharing your expertise with Excel for data analysis. It can indeed be a powerful tool for qualitative studies. When it comes to selecting the best analysis tool, it often boils down to personal preference and the nature of the data at hand. My advice to clients is always: Explore potential tools and go with the one that resonates most with your workflow and comfort level.
Great Dr. Your all vedios are very clear and useful
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the video. Would you please make a video on how we can conduct SLR with Nvivo..
You’re welcome!! I will do one soon.
Thank you
You're welcome!!
Super helpful videos Philip - thanks for sharing. I have a question. I am working with survey data. Once you have coded the qualitative responses, and then chunked your codes up into themes, I want to be able to see if the themes are different, depending on age, gender, location, ethnicity... Based on your description, the Framework matrix seemed to be able to do this, but I can't seem to make this work. I can see the attribute values, but I want the table to have the attribute values as the rows, rather than the individual cases. Any tips of how to achieve this?
You're welcome! Framework matrix can only show cases (files) and themes connected to them. To explore the connection between the demographic variables and themes generated, I suggest you go to 'Explore' tab and click on 'Matrix Coding Query'.
Thank you very much. Please, I would like to understand how to create the cases (below codes), I put the same interviews in the codes and cases? And how can I put the demographic information?
You're welcome Amanda! I just made this video to address your questions: ruclips.net/video/p6_T7ehSWbw/видео.html
Dr. Adu, thank you! How do you make sure the word cloud does not include questions. In your example for creating word cloud, it seems that you have used the entire script, which include questions.
You're welcome Ahmed! Great question, one option is to use auto code separate questions asked from their response but it will depend on how the questions are formatted and their responses are formatted on Word document. Alternatively, you can run word frequency/cloud based on the relevant information coded instead on focusing on the entire document.
Thank you so much. I recently bumped into your videos, your presentation style is easy to follow and understand.
However, I have one issue using the framework matrix, it's been a bit clumsy because my data was collected using focus groups, so I have multiple speakers, unlike interview transcripts where you have one speaker. My table (rows) came out blank without extracts of what participants said in relation to the code/theme. I need help with this.
You're welcome!! Because all participants' data are in one file/document, Framework matrix won't show relevant information extracted for each participant.
Did you click on 'Auto Summarize' after creating the matrix?
❤❤❤❤
Thank you!!
Thanks so much Dr. Adu.
I want to ask how is the classification and presentation of codes you put in other (when the finding from the data is not related to any of your RQ)? I think this should be a new finding from the study that could be of interest, but how do you go about it? Thank you sir.
You're welcome! Thank you for your questions. After presenting the themes addressing the research questions, you could also share that unique information under 'Other Findings' section. It's not required to share the information that doesn't address your research questions but if it is important to present, I suggest you do so.
Thanks Dr Adu. Your videos are quite explanatory and helpful. Can I send you an email to discuss how to analyse my data please ?
Thank you! Here is my email: info@drphilipadu.com
Thank you, Philip Adu, PhD for this brilliant presentation. How can you visualise findings for 92 participants? I feel approaching it from the mapping and bringing out the characteristics of the respondents under the theme may look untidy when you have more than 80 respondents. How best can you present findings with 90+ respondents?
You're right! Creating maps may not be the best option. In case you want to create maps, you can select a few participants to do that. Alternatively, you can create Matrix Query Table, showing specific demographic variables and their connections to the themes.
Thanks
You’re welcome!
How to show the generated codes and child codes with reference?
You can right-click on any of the codes and go to 'Expert' and click on 'Export list'
Hello. Thank you for an informative video. I followed your video and tried to export my framework matrix but it failed. it says" Failed to export Framework Matroix due to the following: Input string was not in a correct format." What does it mean? And can you please help me how to solve it. I appreciate your help.
You're welcome!! I'm not sure what to do to address this issue. I haven't seen this error message before. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to help.
hello Phillip, my framework mattress is empty? Im not sure what did I do wrong?
You can click 'Auto Summarize' after creating the table (see: ruclips.net/video/YefISJUAFks/видео.htmlsi=hlnQZCu4gwlxTr2x&t=855)
yes , thanks a lot Philip@@drphilipadu
Is it possible to present all themes in one visual, like on concept map rather than one visual for each theme?
Yes, it's possible. Especially, if you have established the connections between the themes based on the data.
Could you do a video for that please@@drphilipadu
Hi, i created a frame work matrix but it is empty
You need to click on 'Auto Summarize' (see: ruclips.net/video/YefISJUAFks/видео.htmlsi=mJnTUNrpPN0fLxnW&t=855)
In Framework Matrices, i press auto-summarise and none of my data shows, up cells remain empty even after I selected all my participants in ROWS and themes in COLUMNS. What is happening? Also run query function has stopped working, keeps on coming up error when i try and do a text or word search.
Can you right-click on each of the codes and themes to make sure 'Aggregate Coding from Children' is checked.
Great job. Is there any difference between node and case?
Thank you!! Codes/nodes are containers we create based on the what we select from the data. Case is a file we create for each participant. Participant’s case contains their demographic information, transcript, and codes and themes generated.
There is no way this is better than AI chat GPT In creating summaries, themes, tables, how concepts are related to frameworks and how frameworks can be created and how concepts of particular theories can be broken down and analyzed..
Each of the tools has a role to play in our data analysis process. For me, if I have a lot of data, I'll first use ChatGPT to help summarize and generate initial codes and themes and I'll then use the codes/themes to manually code aspects of the data with the help of a qualitative data analysis tool such as NVivo or Dedoose.
I would like to present a framework matrix, but it doesn't appear to be an option in NVivo anymore....
Are you using NVivo Mac?
@@drphilipadu yes
How do I get a percentage of participants per theme?
When you export the themes to excel spreadsheet, you can create the percentages. You can export them by right clicking on any of the themes, go to ‘Export’ and click on ‘Export List’
when I was doing the Framework mattress all the table were empty, why is that?
it says 100.00% Coverage in everything 🥲
I've found out: is the each case contains everything basically the same as the transcripts (the files) what could I do next?
I e got it now it has an automatic button 😂😂😂
Great! I'm glad you got it!!
I am not interested in developing a project map, word search or word cloud. I just want to create a Framework matrix to present all the information in a table. The steps demonstrated in the video are not supportive in this case. Please guide.
Are you using Mac version of NVivo?
Thanks a million for your fruitful presentations. I have a question. In one of your previous videos: ruclips.net/video/fI-kSSHjWxM/видео.html (32:50), you said that you can label codes that are not relevant to the research questions but still important as other findings. How can we eventually sorting and presenting them?
You're welcome! Great question! You could sort them the same way codes under their research questions are sorted. There a lot of flexibility when it comes to dealing with codes/themes under the 'Other findings' container. You can choose not to present them but if you think presenting all or some of them will provide additional supporting information to the main findings, then you could present them.
@@drphilipadu OK thanks Philip!! ☺️
Too many ads interrupting this video.
Thank you Peter for letting me know! I'll look into fixing it!
Great Dr. Adu. Your videos are helpful. Please can you give me your email address, I would like to discuss my thesis with you.
