This video was very helpful to learn how to use Nvivo for my dissertation, Dr. Adu! What is your suggestion for developing themes within a case study? For example, I am doing a case study with 3 different states within the USA. Should I go through these phases with my 3 research questions as the primary codes or the different states as the primary codes?
Thank you for watching my video! You can go through the phases and codes all the cases together. Then after developing themes you can determine what case is linked to which theme. I hope this helps!!
Thanks very much for all the insightful videos you have made so far!! I could not have come this far without your videos. God bless you, Sir!! I have a quick question, please: How do I demarcate amongst my interview participants. I want to code separately for each participant so that I can analyse my data based on age of my participants. Please advise!
You're welcome!! I'm glad the video was helpful! You can do that by creating demographic information on NVivo. This video would help: ruclips.net/video/p6_T7ehSWbw/видео.html

Thank you very much for sharing. I noticed you focused on going back to research questions as anchors and guidance. But if my approach is inductive and have only general topic but no clear research question. What is my anchor for coding and theming?
You don't have to have an anchor code in your situation. However, if you have more than one 'general topics', you can create containers (anchor codes) for them and then create and arrange codes under them.
Thank you for this brilliant and easy to comprehend presentation. Do you have any video on Content Analysis in NVivo Made Easy. If you do, kindly share the link. Thank you.
I don't recommend creating a new project but I suggest you create a copy of the previous project for the previous phase and work on the 'copies' project for the next phase. This practice would help you to keep the original projects.
You're welcome! Just to keep record of each phase, in case you want to show to people the initial codes developed before categorizing them to generate themes.
I haven't used NVivo to explore relationship. However, I normally explore relationship between themes outside NVivo. I examine each theme to determine causal, concurrent, sequential, and embedded relationship.
Hi thank you for your video, i am currently writing a literature review and i have to do thematic synthesis of the qualitative papers i am using, i wanted to ask if this is still the process i will use. Also do i upload and work on the studies differently or am i doing it together
Thank you for making these videos freely available - it has been very helpful! Just have a quick question. I followed the steps for phase 1 & 2 and then copied my project for phase 3 & 4. I created a folder in the section where the browse option opened to and then also dropped all my project files in this folder. When I went back to open my project, all the files (interview videos and transcripts) were missing from my project. All the codes I created are still there, but no files, When I click on a code it does open the section in the transcript that it is coded to. Any suggestions to restore the lost files? I have made small editing changes in the transcripts while I was working on it in NVivo, so not sure if there will be issues if I simply import it again? Thanks for helping!
What if I have just one research question, do I still create a container for the research question? I watched the videos but did not hear you address such a situation.
hi and thank you for great videos! Is it possible to write comments etc in Nvivo? I think the system Nvivo makes with the codes is working very well, but I have not found a place to write comments (which is not directly in the text)? best regards
You're welcome Kathrine! It doesn't allow to make comments on the document but you can use 'Memo' and 'Annotation' function to make comments (i.e. document your thought and reflections) and link them to segments of the data.
Can I put all my interviews in one word file and auto code it. I have three types of attributes like personal service and product attributes and I want to extract themes on these three how I should do in simple way with whole 30 interviews. please reply
First, I wouldn't use auto code because the themes generated may not address the research questions. I suggest you manually code it using NVivo. Also, it would be great if every participant have their own transcript. This helps to determine who are connected to a specific theme.
This is amazing. I appreciate this so much! Is there any easy way to merge codes if you find that you have two that are very similar and you've already created separate codes? Thank you.
Thank you! You can open one of them and drag the excerpts in the code and drop then into the other code. You then delete the code you opened. I hope this helps! Philip
Question- assuming in your findings, your literature and knowledge confirms that what the teacher is describing is “differentiated instruction” which according to her, she uses as a responsive way to cater for the ESL students to match up with the other scholars. However, she described with many examples without using the term “differentiated instruction.” Maybe, she didn’t know that’s the name. In creating your theme, is it advisable to create you theme based on preferred phrase or words than to use differentiated instruction? This case, you create something unique, but whoever reads the excerpt and knows differentiated instruction knows what you are talking about. Or it’s okay to just use differentiated instruction? Yes, you can label it as 'Using differentiated instruction'. When representing the findings, you will have the chance to define it and quote the participants to support the them (see: ruclips.net/video/Gm3okfqvgNs/видео.html)
