The dad of Geofrey Oryema was called Eronayo Oryema, he was the first Inspector General of Police in a post independence Uganda. He was murdered by dictator Idi Amin. My dad was his driver. That is how he ended up in exile in the1970s in France where he lived until his death.

I am writing this in July 2022 as I have just discovered this man after watching a kenyan film on Netflix and Geoffrey Oryema is doing the main sound track called Market Day, the most beating sound I have heard in a long while. I am sad that I never heard of him before. I am now hooked to his songs which are all beautiful as I can understand the swahili bits of them. Now I am hooked to his songs. So sad that he died. May his soul still continue to make such sweet melodies in heaven ❤

Hello, so glad to connect with you. Geoffrey Oryema is my absolute favorite musician of all time! But I just now discovered these priceless videos of him performing here on RUclips. Oryema’s father was beheaded during the reign of the ruthless dictator, Idi Amin. Oryema was smuggled, still a youth, out of Uganda in the trunk of a car and found exile in France until his death in 1965. His music heals me. My fiancé was a Tutsi from Rwanda. His family was
exiled in Uganda since he was 3 years old. Gasana was brutally murdered on the front fighting the Hutu army during the genocide against the Tutsi people in 1994. ❤Oryema’s music heals my shattered heart!

I just today read about his passing, after hearing his music for the first time. It's an oddly tender hurt when you stumble upon someone who is beauty personified, only to discover they are gone from this Earth. His music affects me deeply, it's taking quite an effort to keep the tears from spilling over and my throat aches and I don't have the words to explain why. It's all languages and no language at all. His voice moves all through me, it dances up my spine. I'm content to just feel... perhaps that was his intention, after all.

I just can't believe i have had to discover this man's music in 2023 after reading a story in the daily monitor about the death of his father! Unfortunately, he's gone too! I just can't forgive myself

such a beautiful soothing voice. Music crosses borders and songs such as these illustrates that words are mere containers

After Mancity battering my team Manu, it had to be the late legend's song to sooth me. May you live on my brother.

    In this land of Anaka
    They called us Payira
    In this land of Anaka
    They called us Payira
Obiga lead me in this darkness
    Show me the way
Obiga take me to a place
    Where I can see light
(Obiga lead me in this darkness)
    Show me the way
(Obiga lead me in this darkness)
    Show me the way
    In this land of Anaka
    They called us Payira
    In this land of Anaka
    They called us Payira
Obiga lead me in this darkness
    Show me the way
Obiga lead me in this darkness
    Show me the way
(Obiga lead me in this darkness)
    Show me the way
(Obiga take me home, take me home)
Obiga lead me in this darkness
    Show me the way
    In this land of Anaka
    We had hope in Obiga
    In this land of Anaka
    We had hope in Obiga
We had hopes, we had dreams
    Of a clear green land
In place of the family house
    Dead sand, dead sand
(Obiga lead me in this darkness)
    Show me the way
    (Obiga take me home)
    Show me the way
    Obiga is no more
    We are left in disarray
    (Obiga take me home)
    The clan of Anaka, pillar

I too am saddened to know of him after his death. But to our great misfortune, people in the USA seldom explore talent beyond our own boarders--as if we have the exclusive right on talent. I am glad that I'm NOT that way, and thanks to the internet, discoveries from around the world can now be made!

This is the kind of song that talks straight to the mind...sub conscious... Its so inflicting that it blends everything together sadness, happiness... Joy,sorrow. ...its weird...the paradox
