For me, most interesting detail comes at 2:09-2:12 .. he switched from the back side of the blade ! Which means he used back side all the time to not hurt anybody. What a spirit. Maybe I should see the movie again to remind myself if anyone was actually hurt in the fight (except that last "fountain" guy who was actually and unfortunately cut by his buddy).
He stabbed some of them already (not deadly). About the side of the blade: very likely he did that to parry with the blunt part of the sword, so he does not ruin the sharp side for nothing. The blunt side has a bigger surface, ideal for blocking.
I saw this movie. Is based on a Kurosawa's script about a master swordsman Ronin in search of work who accept duels with swords made of wood, gaining the bets money. The samurais here are after him accusing of cheating. He tries to dissuade them to fight but in the end he wipes them all.
Mineuchi is the act of striking an opponent with the peak on the back of a non-double-edged sword such as a Japanese sword. It is also called Muneuchi, and it is sometimes written as Tosebeuchi in both readings. Note that hitting with the side of the sword is called hirauchi. (Wikipedia)
@@wolfgangkranek376 I have never seen this movie, but judging by the costumes of the samurai, I imagine it is set in the middle or late Edo period. The Edo period was a peaceful era in which there was no war for 260 years after the war. Double-edged swords were used in Japan over about 1000 years ago. Japan has long had a method of reducing iron sand and charcoal to make a high-quality stainless steel called tamahagane. Approximately 1,000 years ago, the manufacturing technology for tamahagane improved dramatically, and its quality became extremely high, leading to the overwhelming use of single-edged swords. Double-edged swords are used in religious ceremonies and rituals. I don't know the techniques or vocabulary of a samurai who uses a double-edged sword. However, my level of knowledge is very low, so someone familiar with Japanese culture might know something. I apologize for not being able to answer your question.
Not bad, choreography wise. He opened with classic aikido moves, then the sword. Minor nit: he didnt do a chiburi (blood shake) before sheathing at the end. Never, ever, sheathe a dirty blade ... that's a no no.
Watch it again, but more carefully. No chiburi needed because he didn't want to cut anyone. He had reversed the blade. He used it to slap with. And for the sake of it, a flicking rotation on its axis shakes of more blood. I adore this scene. Nicely portrayed intent of "saya no uchi"

I think it's safe to say that the guy behind him was scared shitless. I think at 1st though he was waiting for an opportunity to strike but if you notice a lot of the guys were lunging at him so him attacking he probably would've ran into one of his own guys.
Be aware that the samurai can operate swiftly and strike targets in the blink of an eye. They are trained in the sense that their attention is widened from even behind them in tandem with the Agile footwork. So even if that guy behind him was to strike, he'd side step last second and counter. Battling in this small fights means certain death. This isn't mma, or a street fight. Either strike with precision and accuracy or die attempting to do so. Even if that man did strike, he would've been just that much slower than the others that previously tried to kill him. This is what Kata training is meant to help with. Fighting against multiple attackers, keeping level headed and execution of fast successive strikes without hesitation.
Said it before and I'll say it again: after several of your mates just got their azzes kicked convincingly why would you? I know, it's a movie meme. Stupid is as stupid does. Otherwise there wouldn't be much of a fight scene.
I find the staging of the main character's actions and movements unrealistic, such as the sponsored courtyard fight with the opponent making simplistic thrusts with his weapon while the main character responds with easy slight dodges. In this scene he is walking through the forest to go somewhere, but his manner is as if he was walking in a meditative garden location. Get it right.
@@stevetheduck1425 There's that, and then there's how you frame that fact. Everybody and their mother talks about the ways in which movies aren't real. How many people understand how that's an aspect of what's good about them, especially in their potential.
@@8523wsxc You're not wrong about the fight scenes, but you're also still very much missing the point. The fight scenes don't need to be realistic, this is a story, and the fights are part of telling that story. The fights could be very symbolic, told in ways that would be entirely unsatisfactory to an "action fan" and it would STILL be a great telling of a story.
