What do you wish you knew as a beginner Swimmer ?
Learning to breath and what to do during rest periods. First several times practicing you swim 25-50m then stop to catch your breath, how do you breath, count breaths? What do you do to prep yourself to be able to get to the next goal 100-200m and so on, then what do you do at these rest periods.
how to breathe during backstroke properly? thanks for your time ,DEMON. , please.
This channel. 😂🤦♂️ So many tips that have helped me through my swimming journey. I'm the only one in my small family that can swim.
You single?
That progress is incremental & highly technique oriented, requiring regular practice & effort to make it look easy 😊
I'm learning to swim at 63 years young! I love it! This channel has helped a l o t!
Learning to swim at 50, your experience resonates with mine 😃
Thank you both for being so inspiring!
You guys are awesome!🎉
How did it go?
Heck yes!!!❤
While I learned to flap about in swimming lessons as a kid, it wasn't until this year, at 33 years old, that I decided to get private swimming lessons with a coach to actually teach me Freestyle form and technique. Was the best thing I ever did in the pool
How long did it take you to learn?
@@rundown132 5 lessons. I learned how to kick (position of feet in the water/toes; did drills with kickboard). Freestyle hand technique: This took 2 lessons on its own as there are so many element I had never know (stages of the arm movement, elbow position, keeping my body mass narrow. Did drills with floaty between my legs). Breathing was harder for me than I realised, I found it psychologically odd learning to take more shallow breaths (opposed to trying to hold my breath for dear life for fear of drowning), as well as head positioning during breaths, he taught me to create a little pocket of air with a head tilt that allowed me to breath while half my face was stl underwater (for a non-swimmer that was mind blowing). Then there was combining it together for a consistent and flowing movement. Overall, it completely re-taught me how to swim, realising for 30 years I was doing it ALL wrong
I did that at 41..but now m unable to do doggy paddle... and without it they don't take you to deep.
Oh my...im also only starting at 33 and it is so difficult to keep afloat,I will definitely use this tips.
@kkkrisada I'm just about 33 as well and just became a certified lifeguard. Didn't have the opportunity to take swimming lessons as a kid but learned how to swim breaststroke and elementary backstroke when I was 14. Over the last few years I've taught myself the sidestroke and can do that really well, but I look forward to learning freestyle, too!
I am 29 and I was afraid that I am too old to learn to swim, but so many people in the comment section are giving me inspiration. I guess it's never too late for anything as long as you have burning desire to learn something new in life.
I'm 29 and start learning to swim now too. Never too late
I am 72 and learning to swim
You are never to old to learn. I started learning at 58 years old. I used to be TERRIFIED of water. I used to hang on to the wall. Now I am everywhere in the pool.
Let's go comrades, I will start too at 28
You are never too old to learn anything
I started learning to swim 2 months ago (I could swim 25m before) and I now can cover fairly comfortably the 1500m olympic triathlon distance. I swim 4 times a week. I am 26. If I could do it, you can do it too.... GTN definitely helped a lot.
Well done!
I've a 20 metre pool. Started swimming just this week. I'm always tired by time I swim one length of 20 metres so I have to stop. But this week I covered 700m, but it took me a long time each session to get to that due to taking breaks . How did u get up to 1500m and not taking so many breaks ??
@@na-dk9vm my biggest issues, other than lack of technique was that my butt and leg sink making it really hard to cover distance and I used to think that I need to breath every 4 strokes. I fixed it by using sim short every other training (or buoyancy short, those neoprene shorts) and it helped ne be more flat. I also decided to take a breath every 2 strokes. Making the long distance more sustainable. And finally I work out my arms outside of water to get some strength. I also had some friends telling me what's wrong with my techniques. Anyway, I tried and watched everything I could. My goal was to do olympic distance triathlon this year.
@@gtnis 13 too late to learn swimming ?>>>>>>...???????
@@user-nm1xj3rt5u Of course not. People in their 70s do it.
Im a 7yrs runners, half marathoner and trail runner. Now turning 48 yrs old learned my formal swimming lesson and training. Thanks A LOT of your videos which really help for my form and techniques 🤗💪🏼
I’m currently having lessons with a plan to actually complete a triathlon next year. Had a drowning accident when a kid and hated water ever since but set myself a challenge to conquer the fear and learn. Then complete a triathlon.
I almost died in a pool at 11. I conquered most of my fear learning to swim on my own since 2021. I had done long distance road races to overcome my hatred for running. However I don’t know how to ride a bike yet but perhaps one day I’d conquer my fear of falling from a speedy rack to learn it. Yes I do think about triathlon but not committed to the idea.
@@33Jenesis sounds so similar. Glad you’re conquering those fears. I hated running and really enjoy it now. Especially trail running (shhh now road runners 😜). Grew up in Brescia Becons so I’ve always mountain biked. So cycling was always my pleasure and escape.
I learned to swim as a child but didn’t progress very far as I was afraid of the water and I’ve been afraid ever since. I’m now 45 and started having lessons 3 months ago. I wish I’d done it sooner and not been so scared to swim. I get a lot of enjoyment from swimming and Im getting fitter too!
All of this is super helpful and better than other clips for beginning adults. Thank you!
For me, exhaling through the nose under water is the hardest part of swimming. It's a very unpleasant feeling, and I'm never comfortable with it
I am a senior adult newbie learning since mid 2021. It took using floating belt and snorkel for a long time to get over sinking fear. It took a long time using snorkel while practicing form to get everything aligned. It took a very long time to get breathing right while not affecting everything else. Now I can breathe bilaterally while cutting thru water without much splashing. I also swim breaststroke well, don’t get tired doing longer distance.
Well done on persevering! Great to hear about your improvement! 🙌
You just motivated me, thank you 🫶🏼
Thank you for sharing I feel a little less self conscious
You're to scared BABY 🍼😂😂😂😂😂
after years of swimming my own way, I'm open to learning at age 61! Thanks for the guidelines!
Im 45 and just learning the swimming strokes
Loved all the info in one video! Very helpful.
Happy swimming, beginners! You can do it!!!
I learned to swim when I was 6 and been a beginner ever since.
How old are you 😂❤
I stopped swimming in my teens because of a bad experience in my life ...at 39 i learnt to swim again because my son needed his dad with him in the water but i still have moments of anxiety so i attend weekly now to improve my confidence
I've noticed swimming helps me with my asthma :D Having to control you breathing so much more when at the pool really helps later in the day as well.
How it helps in asthma
Well I did miss that boat as a child
But now I am having swimming lessons
I'm 59 years old
Better late than never
very helpful
Really interesting video, learning to swim at 57 with the hope of doing some form of tri in the future, all tips gratefully received
Backwards swimming is the easiest for me. I need to learn to use my arms more than my feet
I had silly attempts as a kid but in all honestly never truly learned. Going back now at 42. The struggle is real! But I’m confident and I already signed up for a beginner triathlon in a year.
Hows it going ?
Very informative video!!! Just in time for my first triathlon this weekend! Thank you for all of your videos which have helped me greatly.
Have fun - hope it goes well!
I am struggling to rotate gasping for a breath and drinking a lot of water. Any tips? Thank You !
Two things: I wish I knew about stretching routines for my shoulders. I would have saved myself many “off weeks” waiting for my shoulders to heal. I also wished I knew that the catch and pull are two distinct actions. Although they happen very close to each other they should be kept far apart….!
Same. I broke my arm 2 years ago and recovery has been tough. I have just now gotten back into basic drills and it felt really good to get back into the water.
Just started learning 4 weeks ago. Am 28 and it's going well!
Great job - keep it up!
I didn’t learn swimming as a kid and have always been fearful of water ..I’m 40 and have just started learning since 6 days..still little afraid but enjoying the process..hopefully I will become a good swimmer soon..
I’m 36 and taking lessons. Its going pretty well but I got some water in my lungs on the last lesson and I’m feeling discouraged. It feels so hard to learn. But I will keep going.
I'm 22 and I started swimming last week! Thank you for the tips
Awesome!Check out our 'Swim With GTN' Playlist ruclips.net/video/5Cq2ePY_aEg/видео.html
cheers!
This video is perfect.
Got my first individual swimming lesson at 2.45 today argh. I can swim BS ok/well (taught myself at 18 -now a lllllot older than that) but struggle with FC. I become the kid who was dumped at the shallow end at school and immediately lose confidence. For me the key always feels like it’s the rotation. Get that and with it comes the breathing and then I relaaaaax but that only happens occasionally!
Did my first ever triathlon on March 27th and did the (pool) swim BS. It was 750 which was fine but I found swimming BS in the choppy water following people doing FC a nightmare and my time was two whole minutes slower than I’m used to. Gutted. (Got lost on the bike too but that’s another story haha)
This helped ALOOOTTT i was swimming at 1mph because I keep kicking it like a football and not paddling it
I wish I knew it wouldn’t be as embarrassing as I thought it was going to be.
Im training for my first triathlon in june. Olympic triathlon. I can do the 1500m swim in 49 mins, the cutoff is 55 mins.
The only probelm i have is im so tired when im swimmimg. I take so many breaks. Im still getting in under the cutoff time but do i just keep doing 1500m sessions, or do i add easier swim sessions ?? Currently doing 2 sessions a week
GTN: What do you wish you knew as a beginner Swimmer ?
My Ghost: Too late, "never swim in open water . . . alone!"
Yea you can, I am 25 and cant swim, after 2 solo sessions with some youtube vids and my gf as backup, I can swim, not good and fast, but I can swim around a bit. Hardest part is putting the head under water
and dont forget to close your fingers when your pulling or the water just goes straight through 🙂
Not correct. Closed fingers create drag.
@@33Jenesis More drag when pulling is better to catch more water 😂 thats why EVF is so important too. But really open hands or closed hands doesnt make a difference, its just when you close your fingers your entire arm tends to become more tense which then can slow your stroke. The open or closed fingers isnt the issue
i had no idea
i learned how to swim when i was 2
Think this is aimed more at the intermediary who has mastered the floating bit and the fear rather than the novice (absolute Beginner)
It's never to late to learn to swim. Just takes a little time
Same place
do u take the air with your mouth?
It's so hard, I might give up😢
Keep trying ❤
How do you remove body hair?
You mean keep excelling throughout the all strokes always ?
thank yall so much because i will be going swwiming and i go to summer school and if you don't make it then i have to wear a life jakit and i do not want to wesr that so thank you
I am 60 and unable to stand easily in the middle of the pool water after floating. Any suggestions.
You need to practice folding knees towards chest while pushing arms downwards. When knees are close to chest, butt drops downwards automatically, thus facilitates planting feet on pool floor. Your eyes should continue to look down until your feet are under you. Left your head last when your body is upright and arms by your side.
@@33Jenesis Thankyou. My knees remain folded and thus my feet don't touch the floor😔
Is this vid shade?
I’m 9 I learned at 3 or 2
I just drown. I don’t know why. I could do back stroke as a kid but nowadays I sink like a rock.
want to swim in sea😄😊
i run i swim
I wish i knew how hard it is to "unlearn" inefficient/bad swimming technique - i would have focused more on a good body-position/movement
Definitely!, Once you have learnt poor form/technique it's more difficult to correct! It is certainly possible though :)
I’m 29 years old😅😅😅 and I’m only leaening gow to awim now….
Learning to swim at age 51.
i guess i was born for diver
I have seen this video
Which goggles are perfect for diving....?
Making sure that the goggles fit correctly is the most important part for diving !
@@gtn cheers...🙏🏻
@Thanks
I need to search...how not to drown😂😂..this is impossible for me..
I’m young I am going to swimming in four days I don’t know how to swim and I am going to get bullied for it I have lived a lie for my whole life that i can swim I am scared and I can’t skip it bc my my mum had to play 80 dollars bc it is a school activity
i am only 8yrs old
Age is but a number
"Turn your head to the air" Well duhh 🤦♂️
They forgot about mentioning the very small (sarcasm) matter of actually being comfortable underwater.
I could never find the air. It was water everywhere and not comfortable at all.
I'm just scared

Is 10 to old
No 10 isnt too old
I hold my breth for 70 minutes
Good video but you guys are 🌽
HOLY MOLY GET TO THE LESSON - IT TOOK NEARLY 3 MINUTES TO START, YOU TIME WAITING TARTS.
Good video bit being picky, the stroke you were discussing is front crawl, not freestyle. A "freestyle" race is literally that - open to any stroke. People invariably swim front crawl in freestyle races because it's quickest.
Can we hold breath 🫁 any time it is recommended?
I learned to swim when I was 6 and been a beginner ever since.
