  • The Dolly Llama is a large, articulated streamer fly that was originally developed for fishing in Alaska's rivers, where it proved to be highly effective for catching various species, including Dolly Varden and Coho salmon. Its design and movement resemble a baitfish, making it an enticing target for predatory fish.
This fly pattern has proven successful not only in Alaska but also in other salmon and steelhead fishing destinations around the world. Anglers often use the Dolly Llama in larger rivers and when the fish are in a more aggressive feeding mood. It is commonly fished using both swing and strip retrieves.
As with all fly patterns, local fishing conditions, the behavior of the target species, and water clarity can influence the effectiveness of the Dolly Llama. It's always best to ask local or experienced anglers for the best techniques and color combinations in specific fishing locations. Just as I’ve done here for bull trout on the Columbian.

Looks like we’re making another plumbus! Next time add a goose snerf to the end, secured to the bead by a zonker strip hackled into a berluti knot.

Another great tie! I was just out in Alberta throwing uglies at bull trout and will be back in early September. Hopefully our paths will cross!

I believe this will work for northern pike and muskie. For those I would tie using olive, chartreuse, and yellow zonker strips with yellow and red ice dub.
