  • Searching Mountain ponds for one of the rarest fish in North America - Fishing the remote Maine wilderness!!
Welcome back to Mainely Outdoors this time around we teamed up with Jacob Knowles ( / @jacobknowles5421 ) and Jeremy T. Grant ( / @jeremytgrant ) to try to catch one the of the rarest fish in North America or the world for that matter. Only found natively in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont the landlocked arctic char is a highly sought-after sports fish. Since it's found in some of the most remote and hard to reach places in Maine, many people never get to see let alone catch this unique fish. Today we take Jakes float plain out to some remote Maine ponds to see if we can accomplish just that! Stay tuned to find out if we were successful!
    Best,
    Jesse

Arctic char, locally known as sunapee trout or blueback trout were quite common until landlocked salmon were introduced into their waters. Salmon are only native to 4 lakes in Maine. Stocking has established them in hundreds of lakes and ponds. The salmon ate the bluebacks until there were none left. After that, rainbow smelt were introduced as a forage fish for the salmon. Many old time Maine fishermen say there are only three kinds of fish in Maine: brook trout. baitfish and junk fish. In most waters I agree with that. If you are fishing anywhere in Maine kill every pike, crappie and muskellunge you catch.

Such a big fan of your channel. My family owned operated Crooked Tree Lodge and Camps in portage lake for many years i worked as a guide for my parents the owners Mainley fishing. My true passion tho has always been fly fishing. I have had the good fortune to teach fly fishing also. Tying your own flies to match a local Mayfly hatch and then going out and clobbering 3-5 lb white fish is my personal fav especially on Carr Pond. Someday i hope to get back to teaching fly fishing. Also trolling copper line for big lake trout on Carr Pond is awesome.

Wonderful trip & glad you shared it.
Odds are pretty good you flew over or near our camp if you flew above or near the Golden road en route to your stop for the ice cave. Sadly, we weren’t able to get to camp this year from MA due to COVID restrictions & some family complications. Your trips provide some relief from our cabin fever & not being able to get to ME. Thank you.
Cooking tip: if your cabin has a wood stove, some have a grill attachment that you can use to swing over the flame for cooking. Either that or use a camp fire. I’ve only seen you use a pan to fry or stove to bake your fish. Brookies cooked directly over wood coals lose some oiliness & pick up smoke flavor so they taste incredibly good. (Same for saltwater oily fish like mackerel or bluefish).
Re flytying: not sure about the char/bluebacks but brookies love Mickey Finns. You might want to give them a try.

They feed of the freshwater Shrimp. I will be checking to see if they stocked it with Char. They take very good care of that resivore. I usually primitive camp there for 2 weeks every year in September. It's in the 14 teeners so it gets a bit cold. To me it's perfect. Around 35 to 40 at night and 70 during the day. There is a pond in Bald Mountain Township, just a few miles northeast of Bingham that still has them as well. Good roads right to it. Unfortunately, the state has seriously endangered that fishery. First by stocking brook trout and more recently with lake trout, (which was "claimed" to be an accident). Talking with biologists, the current plan is to trap as many char as possible and transplant them to another pond.

stop exploiting the sport by telling everyone where you are fishing this is very quickly destroying native habitats and increasing pressure on these remote areas by giving everyone with a fly rod a road map to these ponds. real flyfisherman pride themselves on finding enjoying and protecting these areas by keeping the locations to themselves and not exploiting them for personal attention views likes subscriptions and monetary gain.
