  • Here's an interesting relic from the past. John W. Peterson was an enormously popular song writer, reaching the height of his popularity in the 1970s. So it's not surprising they'd want to make a major motion picture depicting his life. I've never watched the film so I can only tell you this appears to be some sort of soundtrack from the film. Doug Oldham, Truth, Miss Lillie (Knauls), and Dave Boyer make appearances on this album. And of course, Peterson's own daughters (The Peterson Trio) are on here too. This album is from 1977. Enjoy

I have always admired the great gift for writing uplifting inspirational music that God gave John W. Peterson, and he represents something that so many churches today lack. This was the type of Christian music I grew up on, and it still touches the soul even today.

I had this cassette (yes, that was how long ago) when I was just a teenager. Listened to it over and over again. I lost the cassette. Now I am 60 years old. So glad that I found this again. Eerily nostalgic...... Still as fresh as ever. Praise God.

Oh, what a blessing this cantata has been to so many of us! Peterson was, I believe, the greatest Christian composer of the twentieth century. Thanks so much for posting this. It also features the great voice of Doug Oldham, one of the greatest singers of modern times. Oh, that churches would sing such music again!

I thought I had heard every cantata JWP composed, but I’m hearing this for the first time on 3/11/23. I directed all of them or sang as a teen in the church choir.

I wonder how many wonderful Peterson cantatas we did over the years? The man was brilliant! :-) My all time favorite... .... Carol of Christmas! Loved it so much I think we did it three different years! :-)

Our church choir sang a lot of Peterson back in the early 80s. I stumbled onto this while reminiscing about that.

I had this album and played it often. When I was a senior in high school (back in 1977, wow!), the film was shown at the graduation banquet our church sponsored. I also had purchased the book and read it through a couple of times.

I remember my mom buying this album for my dad. Grew up with a lot of Peterson music in our house. 💖

In my opinion no other composer ever reached the heights (at least in the 20th century gospel song-era) that J.W. did. My husband and I did many, many vocal duets with my original piano arrangements of his music. We actually recorded many of them. These are the tunes/gospel truths which stick with one.

Side B is just the soundtrack of the story of JW Peterson's life, if I am not mistaken. No songs on side B.
