Thank you for this detailed documentary about William Rufus. After listening about the man and his accomplishments, it seems he had many redeeming traits as a king. I would imagine had he married (as was the custom of the day) & produced an heir, he might have had a longer life. As for Henry, based on what I’ve read about him, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he was responsible for that “hunting accident.” He was after all a man of his time & status. Well done on this one!

Fascinating and a part of my maternal history, the Drew family which goes all the way back to William the Conqueror and his Doomsday book in 1066! I don't doubt William's homosexuality, though the church certainly would and I believe his younger brother Henry was behind William's death and why he rushed to be king in only three days! Thanks for a great documentary on William Rufus! I love the history of all the different eras of my forebears who left the UK, Scotland and England in 1721 from Ulster, Northern Ireland, landed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and fought in the Revolutionary War, one wounded at the battle of Bunker Hill!

Well, with Robert being so unpredictable and independent-minded, he wouldn't have lasted long. I say this since a king may HAVE to assert authority in some instances, but for the most part, a wise king would know where his strength and weaknesses lie, and delegate such responsibilities to those who would know what they were doing. As for Henry, it seems as though, in their later years together, he was starting to get along better with William. However, since he, as it is mentioned in the documentary, was an opportunist, a hunting trip would be the best moment to make his move, as slipping an assassin into the hunting party, where William would be practically unprotected, would easily allow the assassination to be disguised as an unfortunately fatal hunting accident.

Matilda of Flanders was 5 feet tall [as established by examination of her remains] Their marriage was NOT particularly consanguineous, in that 3rd cousins share only a set of great-great-great grandparents and the once removed indicates that one of them was the CHILD of a 3rd cousin, so absolutely no reason why their children should not be perfectly healthy. The church's prohibitions were excessive at that time.

A fellow named Tyrell an arrow let loose,
And William fell dead as a Michaelmas goose.

Now if they did this frequently, yes, that's an issue, but it's not that dangerous. Sheesh, they may not even have the same Genes at all because of how far apart they are. If that was dangerous then believe me, people would keep better track of their family trees. Everyone is shocked I spend time with one branch of my second cousins, I don't know any of my third cousins, lol. I don't think it's accurate to call him gay. Homosexuality as a genetic trait is rare. Humans like other mamals can mate with either sex and any preference is not exclusive except by choice. Even when a strong genetic preference is present it's not exclusive.
Many gay men even in modern times when it's not imperative, at some point will procreate and straight men will experiment.
I think William Rufus avoided marriage because he was not the oldest brother and he had a very ambitious younger brother. To marry would make Robert feel an immediate need to possibly kill William and Henry too. If he was trying to produce an heir his brother's would not have let him live I'm sure. That was the main trouble with having too many sons back then. The more a heir has to gain, the more likely his brothers would murder him.

I might have had the easy job, his son had to keep the empire his father had built, I can’t imagine a more stressful life for the time. It’s crazy that all you ever really hear about him is that he was gay and probably murdered by his brother. It’s never easy to be an alpha male who happens to be gay in a world dominated by straight males, I imagine he felt embattled from all directions for most of his life, and of course only a cheap shot could easily take such a figure.

An excellent documentary about this fascinating man. One suspects he was "gay" in the same irrecoverable manner as say Hadrian. Hunting with handsome young men in an extremely macho society must inevitably have included an erotic element; but we will never know. The outdated analysis that his aristocratic aesthetic tastes were indicative of secretive homosexuality tells us more about the times in which these views prevailed than anything else.
