I recently read that a modern demolitions expert looked at the gunpowder plot and found that the amount of gunpowder they'd stored would have taken out not only the parliament, but most of central London
They found that within a radius of about 40 metres, everything would have been razed to the ground. Within 110 metres, buildings would have been at least partially destroyed. And some windows would have been blown out even as far as 900 metres away.
Charles Dickens’ A Child’s History of England is free of charge on ibooks and the chapter on James is some of the best wordsmithing I’ve ever had the privilege of reading.

Having just recently learned that King James II and VII is my 10th great grandfather has left me nearly speechless. I wonder how my family could have ever lost track of this information. Then I think of my family coming from, on my fathers side Kentucky and on my mothers side Oklahoma, I begin to realize that life was hard for the people from those areas in past years. Living alone must have taken up most of their time, survival being particularly challenging for them. Life for these people (from the 1600's) must have been terribly difficult, even as royalty. I imagine there must be a lot of descendants around today from this family and I wonder where they are. I guess that is something to pursue at some point. I do know that King Charles sons William and Harry are related to me as Lady Diana also had the same 10th great grandfather as I do. What a strange world we live in.
How most people understand grandparents, cousins, uncles etc is actually incorrect. You are likely a branch of a branch of a branch...and ultimately have zero familial ties (legally and biologically).
I love that James I was always strapped for money and getting his plans busted cause he needed cash, but never in his life he considered the thought that maybe a less lavish and expensive court could help

I don’t understand why it’s said that James II is the last Stuart monarch. You can object to counting Mary, since she ruled under her usurper husband. But Anne was definitely a Stuart, and arguably the only successful one (if by far the least glamorous). It’s only her dying childless that ended the dynasty. If her son had survived to inherit, it’s not clear the dynasty would automatically change to the name of her dullard husband-Maria Theresa’s heirs remained Habsburgs, all the Tsarinas’ heirs remained Romanovs; Elizabeth II’s heir is reigning as a Windsor.
@@avalonkerr8332 Wasn’t her husband a useless younger son of the kind of denmark? or are you suggesting Anne’s relationship with Sarah Churchill was so kinky, she was essentially a throuple wife of the Duke of Marlborough, who *was* the most brilliant military mind of his time? One more way Anne was much a better monarch-and feminist!-than the Tudors: Anne neither had to stay unmarried (like Elizabeth I) nor name her husband King (“Bloody” Mary I) to survive as a ruling queen. She simply sidelined her consort with no compunction about emasculation, which was the model the Russian tsarinas, Maria Theresa, Victoria, and QE2 all followed.
Great series about the Stewart Monarchs . To add , when William of Orange and Mary II ascended the throne , in their Coronation Oath , they swore to recognize the sovereignty of Parliament . As Parliamentarians were elected , this was the beginning of Democracy in the modern world . Later in 1689 the English Bill of Rights was passed , which was based on Enlightenment ideas . 1689 English Bill of Rights is part of Britain's Constitution . However , in 1689 only land owners could vote and to be a Parliamentarian a person had to have considerable wealth . The struggle for universal male suffrage continued during the horrific working conditions of the industrial revolution by Britain's 19th Century Labour Class . .
This is a great documentary. My family is descended from the Stewart Scottish clan. We like learning more about our ancestors even if they are distant relatives.

I think it shows some of the differences of current generations when talking a bout Saving Private Ryan. One of the issues with losing so many brothers was the idea of lineage. Poor sound.
Fully thought she just kept calling them “stupid kings” not Stuart kings in the very beginning
Compared to Henry VII and Henry VIII, the Stuart was very soft indeed. The first one killed all his opponents and the second killed thousands of people from Yorkshire, men women and children..... Without speaking of his wives and chancellors....
English: "They touk ouar jubs. Build the moat."
Scots: "We wuz here phirst. Go back to where u came from."
The Stuarts brought everything on themselves. 🙄 Inviting them back was the biggest mistake.
Our family gets it how we live, wild 😂
The dynasty that dropped the ball
I hate these dramatic documentaries. Just want someone speaking about history without all this nonsense.
Yes, all those people who weren't witches
Who is this stunning red headed beautiful, sweet, adorable and articulate young BBC presenter? I’m sure she wouldn’t date a single cardio thoracic surgeon ! Probably not . 😢 ❤
The fact that all of this is bc of religion is just ridiculous.
Lol watch a medieval documentary about the crusades.
