Dad was a fine watercolorist...he only used his own photos, so was choosing light and composition with the camera...he then put the paper on the wall and projected onto it, tracing the photo, working out colors with tiny letters or numbers...once I dared ask "isn't this just paint by number?" He scowled at me, and said, "I" (capital I) "took the photo." "Point made," I said, chastened. His works sold in the thousands, so...whatever works.
29:24 I call this aspirational shopping. Buying a top one hopes to grow or shrink to fit, grocery items that look mysterious such as saffron, cleaning supplies that tout their ability to make your house sparkling clean with no elbow grease, and art supplies one has no experience with and/or no plan for how or when it will be used. 🤷🏻♀️ Sometimes these can spur us to make a change and it all works out 🦄… but more often than not this is not the result. 🤦🏻♀️ Still, once in a while it is just so darn fun!🎉 😄
The first order of business the glasses are fabulous two thumbs up (you can never go wrong choosing green in my book). All of the content in this video is simply priceless. The life lesson Michele has helped me with the most is changing your internal dialogue. Get rid of the “I can’t” or “never will” dialogue. Draw each day in sketch book and after a couple months look back at your work. I find more positives in my work looking back several months later. Peace, love and good karma to all.
Hi Michele, your video has been most helpful! I am struggling with perspective, so this video is much appreciated. You are a wonderful teacher and I’m enjoying your classes. I like your new glasses too! ❤
Thanks for this one. My brain does it’s own thing and needed to be reminded to take the time to work things out. Also the self talk on “I’m learning every day” will be my new mantra. Glasses are very fetching by the way. Jane
Hi Michele glasses look awesome! Your video touched a sore weakness about my drawing capabilities 😢 will try really hard to follow your advice. Many thanks
Morning Neighbour Michele.....we got the rain to clean our Suffolk roads....i love weather talk....4 seasons in one day always springs to mind with our UK weather x In this video u have put into words many things that I have struggle with over the last 3 years of practicing my art and it was only the practice that helped me to see things for what they were and not listening to my pesky brain. Thank u for sharing your practiced knowledge and observing what your past students commonly did. Love Alli from around the cleaner roads of Stowmarket...lol XXX
Several great reminders in this video, thank you. I’ve watched most of your drawing videos and remember you teaching these points individually. It’s made me think I need to rewatch and apply the lessons, not “just wing it”! 😂
I appreciate all your tips. And, I needed to hear your final tips because they apply in all of life. Comparing ourselves to others doesn't help us any. I think what I enjoy best is from the first time I discovered your videos, I felt like I can be an artist! You make art fun and possible! Thank you.
Hi, Michele. Your new eyeglasses look great 👍 All excellent "brain hacks." Especially the one on finding the eye level in photos. PS I like seeing Gimlet whenever he makes an appearance. So cute. ❤
Oh my goodness. This video is jam packed with absolutely brilliant techniques and information. Watch to the very end. I now have a completely different perspective, No pun intended, 😂, i'm also going to try to stop comparing myself to other people and from consistently buying new art materials. Thank you Michele
Learned so much. Looking at negative space, angles and spacing of facial features etc. Thank you for all your informative and delightful videos . Watching from Connecticut in USA
Great video, Michelle! I wanted to say one thing, though, about comparing yourself to other people when learning. I absolutely agree that it is an exercise in making yourself depressed or despondent if, when comparing yourself, the only thing you take from the comparison is that the other person/people are far better and your own efforts are always going to be sub par (etc. etc etc). However, if you compare your own results with the results of others AND compare their process with your own, I think that there can be good lessons to learn and good ideas to be had - Ideas about how to learn more efficiently or effectively as well as ideas about how to achieve certain effects etc …
Hi Michele. Quite a lot of these points resonated with me. My brain has definitely played tricks on me at times, so it gets told off quite regularly 😅. I think your new specs look great, I like your 'choppy' fringe, too m😊
Being mostly self taught, or not much experience in skill building or tips by teachers such as yourself, I've been left confused or missing techniques. I've not understood about eye-level, especially when it comes to the "mirror" reflection in landscapes. Where does the flip begin & getting the angle of the reflected tree for instance. Real life perspective is a conundrum compared to drawing lines off boxes on the paper, even though I tried to teach it years ago. Then there's the structure of the face when lines don't match up with the face parts. I had discovered the 1/2 & 1/3 etc. but on my own. Teachers would come by when I worked & gave me pointers. At this age learning art discipline like the masters of the Renaissance, which I admire, is too daunting. So keep up the great examples with those spacious new lenses.
Thank you, remember that if all you can do is observe accurately then the perspective will always work. Water reflections are opposite, for example a post leaning left will lean right.
Ah it was many years (decades) ago in my daughter's room a whole undersea scene with large shark and a seagull, I think I only have physical photos but I will dig them out sometime and post them. Unfortunately she didn't get to enjoy it for long as her father had been indulging in certain activities that caused me to depart the house and take her with me :-(
Love your new glasses. The worst thing I find about getting new glasses is all my new age spots! But you are way too young for these! Thank you for addressing some of my weaknesses-too many courses and supplies. I will hunker down and get to using them.
The glasses look great, they enhance your eyes. As to art, yes, I am an artist and I have a small flat which I confess, is overflowing with art and craft materials. You would think that I should know better at 74, I’m trying to kerb my enthusiasm, not easy, I don’t have any oil paints though( they can be a bit smelly in small spaces). I use negative space often to start my art and I like the upside down tip.
I’ve put my paints away for a while to concentrate on my drawing which is a weaker area for me. I like to work outdoors and lately feel like I’m improving. Perspective and composition are things I struggle with . Your advice on perspective is great and I can see I am improving but composition I just don’t get. Could you maybe do a video on composition please?
Already made one 🙂 I'm not allowed to put links here but this is the title, pop it in the search bar with my name: FINALLY Understand Art Composition; Tips, Rules (and How to Break Them!)

Hi, l can't draw at all, not even a straight line. Honestly. Lost some limbs after accident, non dominant hand with some sensory loss left. Started pebble mosaics because only option and l love nature. Mish mash slowly, mostly, but sometimes attempt realism but fail without artistic talent. Not even shadow. Hard to explain. Tried to do a bird of prey for my sister but destroyed 5-6 attempts now. Having a break to recharge and came across your site when looking for help / hints. I really want to make better creations. Just begun but useful and maybe I can remember what I have learned from you so far. Thanks for this heaps. Especially no cost 😀 PS Nice fingernails, no paint or ink!!! Skills there. I get glue everywhere every time 😁😶😛
I always make the mistake of waiting to pick out frames after my eyes are dilated, then I can’t see a thing! LOL. Then I have a young man helping me pick out frames for my 75 yo face. Now I hate them. Michelle, I can truthfully say yours are very nice and fit your face perfectly. Good job. 😊😊😊
Guilty, Guilty, Guilty; as I look at my two brush pots full of every kind of brush and my paint bin overflowing with colors. So, that’s why I do it, eh. I was wondering why. Prime makes it too easy. Thanks for the lesson. I seem to always learn something from your videos, so, thank you very much!

Using edit on an iPad, you can make a grid on a picture. This greatly improved perspective 😊
