I sat in the Surf Theatre in Huntington Beach, California like 6 does back and immersed myself watching Mr. Lopez standing in these giant Pipeline barrels, so relaxed, so confidant, so comfortable and I was awestruck at his ability and casual demeanor inside these explosive tubes capable of breaking your neck!! Simply amazed by what was on the screen in front of me.. Thank you Jerry- forever, thank you!!
Its Great to See that my friend "G - Lopez" is still here with us after all these years, I remember the day he was putting a Hot Coat on a board behind the shop Surfine in Honolulu, Hi. back in 1970 and he came running out becuse the whole shop was on fire! and he looked over at Davey Smith & I ad said "Wow" thats a real Hot Coat! We all smiled and said lets go to Bowls and get tubed and deal with this later!! Boy those were the days only a few guys out and the waves were just Perfect 4 to 6" and Glassy..... He made all my best boards for the South Shore Spots.... This was before lightning Bolt! Yes not only did he surf well he had a Great Eye for Shape-ing Too.... Thanks Gerry Da' Mouse (Randall Miller)
Gerry is the bomb!!! I remember 5 summer stories when I was a kid that movie made me want to surf!!! And never stoped since!!! Its just weird to see Gerry around so much outside white people like hes forgetting that the soul of surfing is Hawaiian, and he forgot where he came from!!! More power to you Gerry!!!Lots of love and aloha to you Gerry safe journeys!!!!The waves that made you , were gifts from the gods of Hawaii!!!
I had to have a lighting bolt on my magic board of the early 70’s, shaped by Robert August, as I watched…completely embarrassed while he was shaping the rounded pintail…he looked over, handed me the sureform and ask if I wanted to try… the truth is, the magic was, “being in my teen’s.” Being a goofy foot, Jerry Lopez the man to emulate in my book. Made it look like a “cake walk” his words, not mine.
As a grommet in the 70's, Gerry was the one I deeply admired for his modesty and true grace in the water. He continues to inspire.

Do you know of a guy called Micki Briscoe with a taste for bottle necks of DP from those days? Please reply if you can help?

When Laird says” Gerry is like Family” it’s because all watermen (women) are, like family, especially those with a gentle spirit. 🤙
