Nobody really talks about Final Fantasy Dimensions. It pulls a lot from Final Fantasy V and, while I don't care for mobile games, this is a game I would highly recommend.

The level caps were a pain as much as the to be continued party swaps but the memorist to power up by revisiting cutscene places was a nice means of nostalgia. Better than ffd2 that has no exploration/barely any customization.
1:23 ff5 isn't forgotten at all. People do the 4 job Fiesta and one job party challenges.

When you waxed nostalgic over being a 90s anime nerd, I really felt it. I used to find some great anime at Suncoast, like Slayers or Ranma 1/2, and even ordered bootlegged subbed Sailor Moon from the internet. What a time to be alive! XD
Edit: The box art from Legends of the Crystals is so damn familiar, I know I passed it by many times as a kid.

Man, so glad to find another person who's seen this OVA. I thought it was the coolest thing ever back when I first saw it, and that was before playing FFV (since it wasn't officially out in the US yet). It has that great 90's anime sci-fi/fantasy cheesiness to it, but it's really endearing and solid enough, even if you aren't familiar with the source material. I really enjoyed it, and I still have my VHS copies, too! Back then, liking anime and manga was not only a difficult hobby for a kid/teenager given how rare and expensive works were, but it often got you noticed for being "a nerd" or something similar. Still, Legend of the Crystals ended up being a formative title for me as well, and I still enjoy hearing about it.

I never knew that! Ff5 was one of my favourites. I was born in 1990 and loved rpgs when I was a kid, none of my friends were into them, nor did they know how to play roms or that roms even existed and I felt like I was playing this secret treasure trove of games that no one else had access to. I was playing ff5 in grade 3 or four I think. So 1999 I believe. That one just drew me in out of all the snes ones, because of the classes and stuff. 6 was great too but 5 I loved. I’ve still never played 2/4 though!

So many versions, I had a mobile version on a tablet I haven’t used in awhile, and that had the mobile version ff4, AND the ds rom of nes ff3. (Nes ff3 was another one I loved with classes and stuff, I played that when I was really young but the patch wasn’t complete so I only got half way I think.) so I should probably just play those? Since I’ve already acquired both ? Also, sorry for the long reply!

There’s something special about living in the early era of anime in the early 90s. It’s true there was ‘anime’ even before, but the 90s was when Anime established itself as specific genre. I remember having to wake up early or stay up late to consume any form of televised content since anime back then was relegated to the off hours, but I was such a hardcore fan I was willing to do whatever it took because that was really the only way to watch back then.

Thank you for talking about Legend of the Crystals! I got both VHS tapes (the first one was subbed, the second dubbed) from a video game magazine in the late 90s (I think EGM). I had just beaten FFVII and was obsessed with it and getting really into anime, so when I saw there was a “Final Fantasy anime”, I had to watch it. I had no idea it was tied to FFV at the time and while the overblown fan service and considerable gore felt weird for something Final Fantasy, it was still fantastic. It's not a true Final Fantasy V sequel unless the characters look nothing like their concept art. The concept art was always "off" in the NES and SNES games, but FFV was the one where you actually need labels to have any idea who is supposed to be who. Only Krile and Galuf bear a passing resemblance to their concept art. No one else does.
You know, most Final Fantasy games have some pretty world-changing events at the end of the game, so I'm kind of surprised that more of them don't have distant sequels. Final Fantasy 3, 5, 6, and 7 all have events that massively change the geography of their respective worlds. 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 have massive geopolitical changes. The first game sees the whole planet getting a 2,000-year cosmic ret-con that makes you wonder what the new/restored timeline gave us and how our heroes will adapt to their new world. Or maybe it was their original world. Who can tell?

Wow. I'm so glad there is SOMEONE with a deeper appreciation for the pre- golden era titles than me (FF III (the original and the ds version) & FF V are my second and third favorites respectively). I never would've believed that one of my favorite final fantasy series had a sequel in the form of an anime. I'm guessing this is why FF IV got the After Years treatment moreso than FF V did 😮‍💨.
I will most definitely be giving this a watch. I would've loved if Square would've took the budget they had behind that atrocious 2001 adaptation & put it into marketing & if possible... Formed this sequel into an actual video game. Clean some sides of the story up & make it official canon to FF V' timeline. One can only wish though... 🤔
Anyways, beautiful story my guy. It's amazing how influential Final Fantasy can be when appreciated under a certain limelight & your story has given me an even greater appreciation in my most coveted franchise since watching my Mom play FF I on the Nes. V was a pretty good game, even if the balancing was a bit funky at spots. III I could never really get into because it was SO random. Having 9 mummy fights in the first real cave which could single turn kill you if you were unlucky enough to encounter them was a major negative factor for me. I can't even imagine playing through the game on original hardware with no save states/fast forward and just praying that each fight was not guaranteed death.

I love that you love this movie, and I love that you’re making this video.
FFV became my favorite Final Fantasy game after getting it from from the Anthology release on PS1. I was about 12.
A bit later my brother and I rented Legend of the Crystals from Blockbuster, not knowing what it was, and we were pumped to realize it was a FFV sequel.
I also totally relate to you about anime being less common: we really had to work had to get anime back then.
Surprisingly, this anime really holds up, both in story and in animation. It almost reminds me of Nausicaa in terms of art style.

This really brings me back! My friend snagged this from some store and let me borrow it (it was the first volume) and I remember watching it and just being confused. I just got into Final Fantasy when I saw it and played Mystic Quest and 3 (6) not knowing anything about the earlier ones and seven was just nearly around the corner. I do remember seeing this in Suncoast(again, the only place I could find Anime in my area) and I was already starting to dabble into anime, but never got it because they only had the first volume (they didn't have the second one, I always assumed it was just a short movie). I finally got around to playing FFV when I started dabbling in ROMS in highschool (early 2000s) and still never knew it was connected to the anime. I didnt get we weren't getting all the games. I was always a huge fan then and found this anime in a Suncoast and begged my parents to let me get it and they wouldnt. About a year or 2 later i rented from a blockbuster and used two vcrs to get it, then about 2 yeats after that i bought it. By then anthology came out and all the number confusion was cleared. The moment i heard the music of 5 all i could think about was this anime. Then i met mid and i was like "okay i totally get this is a prequel". I was also a huge tenchi fan and recognized almost immediately prettz was matt k miller. When he was a npc voice in ten i also noticed. I loved this so much as a teen, and tried to share my past enthusiasm with my daughter i realise... for as long as it is almost nothing happens and the warriors of light names being so off annoyed me. It is pretty mid. Not good or bad really, but cool it exist. When there is action its awesome there is just so much bothing in between it.
