The Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz dilemma

  • Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are friends off the track but over the past weekend, they dynamic seems to have shifted between the two Ferrari drivers. With an incident during the sprint race and loss of positions during the start of the Grand prix, the two drivers have been critical of one another. This is surprising since the teammate dynamic is arguably the best in Formula 1. But with Carlos Sainz having nothing to lose, could we see tensions continue to rise between the two drivers as the 2024 F1 Season goes on? Enjoy!

@@MadeByPerspective Especially with Lewis' form right now. He's looking worse than ever before and its come from nowhere. A bad year in 2022 and now his worst year both on merit and statistically.
I honestly think if this is the Lewis that turns up to Ferrari, that it'll be the end of his career. Bcs Charles right now, is still leading a Carlos Sainz who's fighting for his future. Charles has been open about struggling to get things right. And he showed this weekend in China, that it was just poor form, and that his class is permanent, comfortably finishing ahead of Carlos in the Sprint and with a noticeable gap in the race too.

@@soundscape26 Oh 100%. I do think Charles is better than Carlos, but Carlos is a really impressive driver. Who helped McLaren leave the back of the field and now has done the same for Ferrari too. He clearly is very talented, and I want him to get the Merc seat. He won't be treated well at Red Bull bcs he can genuinely challenge Max more often than Checo, Gasly or Albon could. So Merc is the best option. Their leaniance on selecting a first driver is good as it means Carlos can thrive. And I do genuinely think that if Carlos were to perform ALL of 2025 how he drove in the first 4 races this year, he could force George out of that team. But honestly as a McLaren fan, I would honestly like him back. I know we have Oscar and he'll be great for the future, but so far this year, he seems further back from Lando. Lando has taken another step forward this year, and Oscar (if he has) hasnt taken a very big step forward. His tyre wear issues are exactly how they were last year, and while he had a great year last year, he's not improved anything this year. Apart from Saudi, he's not beaten Lando (not even come close), and is now losing out. Even if he had damage today from the Stroll-Ricciardo incident, he was 10 seconds back from Lando by lap 12.
Lando was the last rookie for us, and he showed by the first race of 2020 that he had improved. Then in 2021 he improved MASSIVELY, he was getting those Austria 2020 drives and results again, but now he was doing it consistently. We have to see how the rest of 2024 goes, but I do fear Oscar is showing early signs of struggle.

Carlos fought for his position in the Sprint. Maybe a bit too far - after Fernando ruined an opportunity for Carlos/Charles to get 3rd. But Carlos did succumb to Charles a few corners later, cleanly. However, Charles ruined BOTH their Races on Sunday with a corner 1 incident, where Charles sacrificed 2 positions (RUS & HUL) both got past, just because Charles couldn’t allow Carlos past. Carlos maybe fought his teammate too hard in the Sprint. But Charles cost himself (and Carlos) actual points on Sunday by doing what he did in turn 1. And, yes, they’re my favorite drivers…

  • @bill4665
    @bill4665 Месяц назад +36

I think anyone who says that Carlos is better, is incorrect. I don't think this is debate-able.
I love them both, but Leclerc is definetly clear. He was unlucky in Bahrain, largely quicker in the 2nd and 3rd stints at Australia this year but Leclerc was told to stay behind and create a gap. He's definetly closer to Leclerc than ever before, but Leclerc has been pretty honest that he has been performing worse than before and is struggling in his strongest areas so far this year.
I think it's also important to identify that, while Carlos may hold the title of the only non-RB winner for the last year and a half, he has been INCREDIBLY fortunate. He was out-qualified in h2h last year 14-8 to Leclerc and Red Bull just so happened to fail in ONE of the only eight times Sainz beat Leclerc in quali, which won him that race. It's also important to note that, like I said before, Charles was quicker before the VSC tainted things, in the 2nd and 3rd stints, so again, Qualifying had won Carlos the race.
I think Vegas is a good example that, even if it was partly bad luck for Carlos, it was Charles who was challenging the Red Bull's and taking them on for the entire race for a victory.
And finally, when Ferrari were challenging for a title early in 2022, it was Leclerc who was leading the charge and Sainz was left to the way-side.
All of those things are what effected the Ferrari decision. Although I do think they shouldnt have got rid of EITHER driver. Charles is always there when Carlos isnt, and Carlos is always there when Charles isnt. I think that Hamilton decision, was Vassuer's first and only noteable mistake so far as Ferrari boss . The lineup wasnt broke, so he didnt need to fix it.

So because "Leclerc has been pretty honest that he has been performing worse than before and is struggling in his strongest areas so far this year." - that allows him to strike the current "worse" performance off his record for just admitting it? the argument for one being better than the other is entirely dependant on current form, an admission about it doesn't make it matter any less.
Also convenient how according to your comment - for Carlos' misfortune in Vegas, you can give credit to Charles for "challenging the redbulls", yet when it's the other side of the coin and Carlos sees a better result, all you can do is chalk it up to luck and circumstance. Carlos' drive in Singapore was one of the smartest I've seen in F1 and Charles has also had similar great days so I don't think its fair to try and take that away from them?
I can see that you are Charles fan first and I am the same for Carlos so there might be inherent biases in our takes, but I think credit should be awarded where it is due and there is no "one" better driver for once and for all - some days will favour either driver but they'll both still put in their best performance because they're both quite good.

@@1BadPrix i have no qualms about you having a favourite, FWIW i think Carlos is currently in better form but all I was saying was that I found it unfair how OP held their respective achievements in different lights to favour Charles.
You are entitled to your take but I'll respond to your points just for fun.
      1. I don't see age as anything but a number in F1, we're seeing a 42 year old Alonso putting in some stellar performances and while Charles' has less years in F1 I don't think he has necessarily less experience in a substantial way.
      2. He has indeed achieved a lot in a short amount of time and kudos for that, but he has also been in a very fortunate position for that being adopted as Ferrari's golden child -who for all intents and purposes have built the team around him and aren't coy about it. Carlos has had much more of a slog in this regard and often received the short end of the stick at Ferrari
      3. Fighting with max with the current state of the redbull car is kind of a moot point, Carlos is good at picking his battles IMO and I think will fight where its worthwhile - evident from his 2 GP wins in the past year :)

    • @1BadPrix

@emaadbeig1799 that's the thing you only are counting his 2 wins both when max had issues. Now where was he in 2021 2022 and 2023 when max had no issues?
I have no problem with Carlos I just don't think he has that dog in him. Now he has elevated this year slightly because he is fighting for his career. He should have been fighting this hard from the jump.
And yes age is a factor. Young max is way different than max now. You used Alonzo as a reference well let's say young Alonzo is better than older Alonzo because young Alonzo actually won a title.

Honestly think the sport would get better without teammates. It would essentially double the amount of drivers without adding a 21st car. Manufactures could still run two cars but the garage would be REALLY split down the center. No let them pass or hold back so and so. That should add a little fun to the mix. You still train, travel and share a garage but it's every man for himself out on the track. As much as I love watching drivers win it does get old when the same ones win over and over. I want to see a championship go down to the last race. More changes are needed to make that happen.

F1 is a team game and you need to be a team player. If i was an F1 team, i would not sign Carlos. Even if Ferrari did not get Hamilton (which is a marketing move, let's be honest) i would give that seat to someone that will help me win as a team and not only think about himself.

I don't think he has nothing to lose, but he does have a lot to gain.
However, if he would turn that Ferrari into debris every other race 2024 would become a challenge real fast.

Now I really wanna know one thing. And let me n clear n not a Ferrari fan nor Sai or Lec fan, ppl here are saying Carlos is being consistent and is showing his racing and is driving for his ownself and not the team, might I remind you guys of 2023 and 2022 season, where was that consistency?? In 2022 when Ferrari had a competitive car who was fighting the battle with max??? WHO??? and who was the one saying “he’s intimidating me”??? 🤔. It’s hard to agree than Sai can adapt to any type of car, but bins in when the car is oversterrey. M not saying he’s a bad driver, he’s a best #2 driver any team can have, but if he keeps doing what he did in China (missing the apex and pushing your team mate off the track) which TP’s will b ready to take in a driver like that? TP’s have more data than we mere onlookers of F1 to decide who’s better in their team or not. And for ppl sayin that’s racing for the Chinese incident, it wasn’t jst racing that was dirty racing could’ve gotten penalised but as it’s the same team that had to let go, same with monza Sai was dirty driving n cud have cost double dnf there.

As a pragmatist, I understand why teams want to work together. But as a viewer, a fan, it utterly infuriates me when we don't get to see racing for the sake of a brands success. I dont really care about ferrari, or mercedes, or Alpine. I care about watching these men fight it out to see who's the best. Let them crash, I do not understand why any fan would argue otherwise. One gets you a race, the other gets you an orderly queue in order of whos contract pays the most which is boring as fuck.

Dilemma? With a guy that in 3 seasons with Ferrari has never finished better than 5th in any season ?? In the last 2 decades Sainz has the worst record of any Ferrari driver. Schumacher, Barrichello, Kimi, Massa, Alonso, Vettel & Leclerc have better récords than Sainz. He shouldn't even be in the conversation.

Sainz has always been like this at Ferrari, hes just being honest about it now, funnily enough now that he is leaving he decides to show some team spirit. Im surprised he doesnt see leaving Ferrari as an opportunity because he doesnt care that much about the team and it should be apparent to him that hes never going to get the keys to the castle when there is someone faster than him there already. I dont think Lewis is an amazing signing, never thought he was, but honestly anything is better than having that tapeworm Sainz at this team for any longer.
