    Thank you, Nick Rains, for again providing the best step-by-step video on working with a new Leica. As I've done when beginning use of a new Leica before, the first thing I did was charge the camera, hold it in my lap and watch this clear and helpful video, learning the menu options as you go through them, choosing my own options along the way based on your guidance.

    Many thanks, Nick, for this excellent review. Seeing the D-LUX 8 as a major facelift of its predecessor Leica have worked on all major weaknesses, including the menu structure which appears so much more mature and intuitive.
    Although as a conscious user of zoom lenses I also miss the "step zoom" and "zoom resume" features I'll definitely upgrade to this model. I do trust a firmware update will bring these back.

    I like to add that in the single field focusing mode, it is possible to change the size of the field using touch LCD. I find this can focus fast and precise on to a small area of interest, better than spot focus, and better than multiple fields which i never use.

    excellent video explaining all the options. but why, for the love of god, did leica remove "step zoom" and "zoom resume" from the options? both were available on the d-lux 7, and are, for many photograpers, essential or "wesentlich". the one size fits all-approach does not work with a zoom lens camera. please bring these features back in a firmware update.

    • @johnfjeldsted6406
      @johnfjeldsted6406 5 месяцев назад

      I completely agree with this comment. Supporting stepped zoom gives you the sense that the camera is a collection of primes. When I and most Leica photographers shoot, we know what each prime lens gives us. We shoot with specific focal lengths in mind. PLEASE bring this back. As said above, it is das Wesentliche.

    There’s no doubt that this camera is a welcome addition to the Leica lineup Nick. As an ancient Q1 owner (myself and the Q!) I won’t consider buying one due the telescopic nature of the lens. The Digilux 2 had the perfect lens imho with its internal zoom…✌️🇦🇺

    Thanks for the walkthrough! One question: Is there an option to quickly toggle between focal lengths? I assume there is not. But maybe it would be possible for you to suggest that to Leica for a firmware update. I imagine it like on the Q - System, where you can toggle between the (virtual) vocal lengths. In this case probably 24, 35, 50, 75mm. So when you see something and push the button three times, you know it will be at 50mm.

    In the video, you show that AF-On is an option to assign to one of the back function buttons. I was going to ask how the camera could distinguish between long-pressing an AF-On button to invoke it (in AFc) and long-pressing an AF-On button to re-assign it. But I can find no mention of AF-On in the D-Lux 8 manual; I presume this was removed in the 1.0 firmware?

    Hello Nick - As always a great post. There is one item that I missed - How do I add a menu item to "Favorites". Then a second item you mentioned that doesn't seem to work quite right for me. If I set Auto Focus Continuous when in Video mode, it seems to carry over into Photo mode. I think you mention the settings are supposed to be saved separately between these modes.

      Aperture Priority combined with Exposure Compensation is simply quicker and easier than Manual.

  • @mariuspetersen

    Maybe this is not meant for questions and answering, but I'll give it a try anyway: Which of the two ways to "go automatic" is the strongest:
    1: Auto on the diaphragm ring AND Auto on shutterspeed?
    Or 2: "Automatic" in the main menu?
    I have a feeling that "Automatic" in the main menu blocks more possibilities to decide your own settings, while using the two red A's only make the exposure go automatic. This that so?
    And thanks for the video, would have been stuck without it!

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia

      @@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks a lot. I'm now trying to use PSAM from the menu and "Red A" for both shutter and aperture. If I need any priority, a small turn on the ring/knob does it. A fantastic camera - when you get to know it!

    Dear Nick! You explained that you also recorded this video with a D-Lux 8! Question: Is this the sound you only recorded with the camera microphone? ...Or did you record the sound externally? And what did you say to this quality? And I would like to know what you say about the general video quality of the D-Lux 8? ..... Stabiliser, focus etc. Any Information from somebody who uses the cam also 4 filming ?

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 месяца назад

      It's not possible to connect an external mic to the D-Lux 8 so sound was recorded externally on a Zoom H5, using the camera's own sound recording as a sync track. It's quite effortless in Davinci Resolve to do this.
      Generally the video quality is excellent, especially if you turn down the sharpening and contrast.

    I wonder why they bother with jpeg if everyone uses the camera for raw files as you recommend. Around 75% of the camera’s field settings are only applicable to jpeg and therefore the camera menu could be drastically pared down and simplified if it didn’t process to jpegs.
    Personally I shoot only jpeg 95% of the time, only using raw+jpeg when the light is particularly contrasty and even so there are jpeg settings, such as ‘highlight/shaddow’ ‘HDR’ the EC dial and ‘dynamic' that can simply compensate for this. However when there are many lights of different temperatures and colours in a scene, raw is very useful. About 15 years or more ago, at the dawn of digital cameras, raw was far more important to use.

    • @Roar.
      @Roar. 5 месяцев назад

      Some people want full control over their images. JPEG just doesn’t give you that. But yes, for a lot of people jpeg is just fine.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 месяца назад +1

      The wifi and Bluetooth systems need time to boot up. If you turn the camera on and then off again right away, it still needs time to complete that operation before shutting down.

    • @danpaullong
      @danpaullong 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for getting back to me. I did some tests and crunched the numbers. It takes 18 seconds for the camera to "boot up" and 5 seconds to shut down. If you turn it off sooner than that 18 seconds, you have to wait for the boot-up to finish, then for the shut-down sequence. Once booted up, you just have to wait for the shut-down sequence.
