Smaller, relatively low-tax states can be very aggressive even with what most would consider "small" amounts of tax debt. A big part of this is that smaller, low-tax states simply don't collect much in taxes, so in a very real sense "every dollar counts." The federal government, which collects about $5,000,000,000,000 (five trillion dollars) in taxes every year starts blocking passport renewals at $59,000 in tax debt (that's the 2023 figure). $59,000 is 0.000001% of $5,000,000,000,000. To put it in perspective, Kentucky collects about $15,000,000 in taxes every year, and $17,000 is about 0.1% of that.
I'm going through REG atm and this section of regulation, and there's a difference between the punishments between owing STATE and FEDERAL taxes.
Yup…and in general states are more aggressive.
Starting off with the $17,000 almost seems like they're zero tolerance. Good grief.
