For those wondering why you couldn't use a female Greninja or a shiny, it's because battle bond Greninja came from an event. That Greninja was only male&Non shiny, so if you had a female Gren then the opponent would know that you didn't have battle bond. It'd also be a hacked pokemon, so y'know, you'd get banned..

Battle bond was only available on event greninjas, all of which were non-shiny males. Meaning that if your pokemon was a shiny or female, it would never have battle bond, unless hacked in. (Hacked pokemon are of course, not allowed)
I agree, he didn't mention that only the event Greninja had Battle Bond. I wouldn't use the term illegal, maybe more like suboptimal. I'm sure it's possible to win with a shiny/female version

@@gamedominatorxennongdm7956 Because Tera adds in another layer of mind games with virtually every turn it isn't used up, whereas mega's make it so that the power boost is mandatory to have one of the 46 megas (not including Rayquaza nor Mewtwo) on your team. Not only is mega's constrictive due to the amount of pokemon available, but the fact that there are so many undeserved or even useless mega's out there and you're gonna use the best ones anyway. This ends up having very stale/samey teams that use more or less the same meta mega's and pokemon teams. Not only that but you're gonna mega evolve turn 1 the moment you send it out, because there's virtually no point in keeping a weaker mon when you're gonna mega evolve turn 1 (there are very rare and minuscule exceptions where you don't but those are still the niche mons that have it).
With tera you can use it on anyone and almost ANY pokemon can have their time to shine and you can have the freedom of choosing WHEN to tera when you always have to mega turn one in comparison. Tera offers offensive and defensive capabilities, the mind game of when to tera and also to gauge what tera type the opponent uses offers way more versatility and freedom compared to mega's and even dynamax. All in all, Tera isn't just a gimmick where it makes already powerful options better there's counter play and even there are occasions where your most powerful mon can be taken down so you'll have to spend tera on another mon other than them or the opponent guessing correctly and taking your tera mon out. Mega's in my opinion are cooler and better executed, but Terastalising gameplay wise is just better, most if not all competitive players agree too.

If I remember, there is or was a thing in competitive Magic the Gathering where players would run exclusively snow lands (in place of basic lands) even if their deck had no need for snow mana. This was because not playing those lands immediately told your opponent that you weren't running a bunch of nasty cards which require snow mana.

That's why regular lands are free or at most 10 for $1, while snow lands are $2+ each after they got reprinted. Before that they were around $5 a card.

@@cresenciozachary1011 that’s not implied, pokemon are referred too by their gender and have appropriate differences in the anime (not that Greninja has any), this tells us through the use of “he” and “him” that Ash’s Greninja is indeed male which fits the gender rate as more likely

It's not that shiny or female Greninja was _bad,_ it was just that it telegraphed that you were using Protean. It was still a formidable Pokémon to go up against, even if you knew it didn't have Battle Bond.
It was bad. Though sometimes you could tell based on the team, if you guessed wrong you would be at a huge disadvantage, often from turn 1. You are literally throwing away free advantage by using them
@@extonjonas6820 Given the fact that any and all competitively viable team in Sun and moon needs to have answers for both forms of greninja, it wasn't that big of an issue. The loss of the surprise factor hurts a little tho.

Also, funny thing about Keldeo. Both normal Keldeo and Keldeo-Resolute can use Secret Sword, but Keldeo-R has to have Secret Sword while normal Keldeo doesn't. This wasn't really relevant until gen 6, when there was a set that used Focus Blast instead of Secret Sword, so running normal Keldeo was optimal.

Same thing with genesect. Genesect can get the move shift gear, but only from a special real life event, of which it was a shiny genesect. Choice scarf is usually what you run on genesect, but shift gear can be a potential surprise option, so if you are playing Pokemon showdown you should run shiny genesect.
Also idk what gens this is important for, I know I had to do it for gen 8 doubles.

Ash-Greninja is literally a reference to Ash's anime Greninja and he's a boy. Only this specific Greninja can transform because of Ash's aura powers so if you use a Greninja that is easily identifiable as not Ash's (shiny/female) then you reduce the guessing games with your opponent and they can assume your Gren is Protean.
Right now, Ash-Greninja isn't legal in online play so it's perfectly fine to use a female/shiny Greninja. I call mine Kunoichi 🌊.

Am I missing something? How game-changing is having a shiny greninja or female greninja? The other player will know your ability after your first move? What do they give away before the first turn?
Point is Ash-Greninja even in base form cannot legally be Shiny or Female. When send out, you can see gender and color before even attacking. If Greninja is female, it cannot be Battle Bond (Assuming there is no hacking) so it must be Protean or for some reason Torrent (Protean was uber ability and Torrent is trash). In same case if it is Shiny, it cannot have Battle Bond because Battle Bond Greninja is Shiny locked (Again assuming there is no hacking).
Only legal Ash-Greninja was given in Sun/Moon demo version where it was locked to be Non shiny male

They chart out the next 20 possible turns just by looking at your pokemon and guessing the most likely outcomes, so apparently if you give anything away at all regarding ability, it gives them a better chance of hard countering whatever you do next
@@scp-phenomenon014it gets predictable on what your opponent is trying to do, everyone uses like the same 10 pokemon since they tend to be the best of the game. Also it depends on the pokemon are being used too, like for example if a Pokemon is typically used as a tank, you might know what moves that tank pokemon might have to fulfill that role effectively

Not really lol. New battle bond is kinda eh. It's a once per match +1 to attack, special attack and speed which is capable of setting the scene for a sweep but 90% of the time any mon that counters greninja can just switch in and force Greninja to lose the stat boosts. Unless you try to kill the greninja counter before sending in greninja which limits your team to a 5v1 for most of the match and your opponent can just see through it and not send in the counter too

Statement is wrong, I CAN use them, but would be unwise to do so.
That is actually pretty useful in competitive battling, you can guess the opposing Greninja has Protean as its ability if you see it is female or shiny
or just have a Pokemon with attract on your team to counter Ash Greninja.

I miss the VERY early days of Sun and Moon Smogon testing when Battle Bond Greninja was allowed to have whatever Hidden Power you wanted. I messed up so many Kartana with a HP Fire Revenge Killer Greninja, sweeping with the added stats it gave you. All before they fixed it to where you could only have HP Ghost
Anyone wanna inform me on why Ash Greninja wasn't allowed to be female or shiny? Seems like a silly restriction.
Battle Bond Greninja is an exclusive Pokémon that is acquired ONCE by completing the Sun and Moon Demo, and is transferable to the actual game.
As this Greninja is supposed to be a 1:1 replica of Ash's Greninja from the anime it naturally shares the same gender, non-shiny status and even has Ash as its OT, hence why this restriction.

As it was related to a limited-time event, it was shiny-locked and gender-locked for that reason. Ability patches didn't exist in SM, so the same rules that have existed since GenV exist here - the only way to get the Hidden Ability is from a suitable mother. A female Pokémon of Froakie's line that has the ability.
@@CigaretteCrayon not TECHNICALLY limited time, you can still obtain Ash Greninja today thanks to the Sun and Moon demo that is still available.
But you’re still a little short on the info, Battle Bond Greninja is an alternative form within the game’s code, similar to Own Tempo Rockruff. Battle Bond Greninja is coded to ALWAYS be Male, similarly to how Cosplay Pikachu and Ash Hat Pikachu are coded. Like OT Rockruff, BB Greninja have no visual differences between it and a normal Greninja.
Protean is still Greninja’s Hidden Ability, you can’t swap to Battle Bond using any means, so by using a normal male Greninja, you basically make it so it can’t be immediately identified as Protean or Torrent over Battle Bond.
