  • While the fundamentals for controlling the monster truck are the same, the game is different from the USA release.
USA version the object of the game is to complete every single race by coming in 3rd Place or better. If the player fails to do so, the game will end. By completing races successfully, the player will be awarded prize money depending on how well they did. This game also features the option of upgrading the monster truck, which is essential for completing harder races. Additional money can be earned by completing the bonus stages after each race.
There no such thing in this Japan version, first of all you choose between 4 different type of races:
Cross-Country Race: The first event you can choose, the player must navigate their way through a river, as well as a dense forest, and avoid falling off the side of a mountain.
Most of these hazards can easily be avoided. In the North American release, the player will have to maneuver through a raging volcano eruption, dodging several falling rocks in the process, this is absent in japanese version changing the structure of the circuit.
Mud-Bog Race: The second event you can choose, race begins with the player driving through a maze of giant rocks.
This is circuit is completely different in the japan version, there are no path to choose, you play both at same time, once again changing the structure of the circuit.
Icy Road Race: The third event you can choose, the race begins with the player driving through snow and ice, while occasionally dodging large blocks of ice scattered on the road. The player will eventually race through an icy cavern, dodging several stalagmites inside. There are no path to choose, you play both at same time, once again changing the structure of the circuit.
Also, the objective in Power Wheels is to complete three laps around the selected course before time runs out there is no score and competitions between racers. After every lap, extra time will be added to the clock.
The game also pits you against a rival driver who will taunt you before the race begins, and vice versa if you pass him during the race, since you are not compete him, his role to slow you down to fail the race or making falling you down the race course.
Power Wheels also gives the player three nitro boosters before every race, excluding the Demolition Derby, in which the player only gets one.
You can see this differences in the game UI,there is no radar on the right since there is no racing competition, instead you see the map of the race, there is no score in top right since this version don't use it, but there is the timer for every lap and the total.
The tachometer is also absent in bottom left, replaced with a very basic KM/H counter.
So in short words, this version is all about completing the races in the less time possibile, doing records after records and it's definitely not an easy task.
The North American version of Double Axle also featured a very different attract from Power Wheels, and gives you the right to continue, whereas Power Wheels automatically proclaims Game Over after a race.
So it much harder then the USA one, you get once only chance to win and complete the full race.
Demolition Derby: The fourth event you can choose take place at a stadium, and busy highway, there is no beachside course in this version.
The player must score higher than the rival driver. If the player fails to score higher than the rival, the game is over, once again no continues in this version.
There are enought differences to be consired, you can choose free which one suits you more.
The original coin-op was linkable with another one allowing multiplayer, however this feature is not emulated yet.
