  • In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by two of the most fantastic guests of all time Caleb and Natali Perkins from Shema Culture to talk about their conversion journey, their incredible ministry, and how they see the Holy Spirit dismantling the barriers between Catholics and Protestants right before their eyes.
In this epic, 2-hour long conversation, Caleb and Natali unpack what it was that first drew them into Catholicism, what it was like quitting their jobs to pursue the calling of God to begin their ministry, and all of the incredible miracles (and there are an absolute ton!) that brought them deeper and deeper into their Christ-given calling to lead worship, and bring unity to the Body of Christ.
There is so much in this conversation to encourage and provoke, from their fearless pursuit of God, to the incredible Holy Spirit-led movement they're leading, to the drive to dialogue and wrestle alongside of their Protestant friends and families when the tough questions come up. Man alive, it's all in here!

Wow I relate SO much to their experience. I was recently baptized + confirmed on Easter Vigil with my best friend!!! Both of us coming from a Protestant "church", specifically Baptist and anti-Catholic circles. Hearing Natali talk about her experience hits home, it was the Eucharist for me that I realized I needed because it's Christ and as a Protestant there is no valid Eucharist. My best friend who converted realized the importance of the papacy and she helped me to see the need for it and everything falls apart without it. So many Protestants have mocked and slandered my friend and I but I can only pray for them. I hope Protestants come home. I feel robbed by Protestantism because it kept me from experiencing the purest form of God's love in the Catholic Church. I am SOOO happy to be Catholic now.

The most important thing that should not be overlooked in the desire to bring Catholics and Protestants into unity is the fullness of the Truth that is the Catholic Faith. Although we love one another the Truth which Jesus revealed to His Church, the Catholic Church, can't be watered down and our Protestant brothers need to hear it.

Yes, this is what the pope tried to do decades ago. But it’s not the responsibility of the laity to “Protestantize” Catholicism. This couple and their friends are bringing in Protestant and new age actions into the Catholic Faith. Laying on of hands, prophesying, worship/pop music…those are not Catholic. Not biblical. They are new age and Gnostic/Protestant activities.

Pray for them to come back. Maybe they will and they will bring the best that they found in the other faith traditions with them. God is working on the unity of all Christians.
However, there is also the aspect that the people leaving often do so because of our poor witness. So it's a responsibility of all in the Church. I am counting myself in this too.. I've been asking the Lord what can I do to help the unity and help Catholics to not leave the Church but live their faith in its fullness. Those leaving don't know what they are leaving. If they did, they would never do so.

@@barborazajacova7633 right on !!!! We don't witness often because we as Catholics don't know our faith and the gifts it offers. This is our fault as Catholics and not just the priests. Of course the intransigence of the priests to speak a word of witness, explain in a solemn way whats happening in liturgy and why, and not only push us to evangelise but to deeply evangelise us, is so important. I have heard from Catholics that "Cathooics know their faith , they understand the Mass and we don't need to break up the mass by explaining the parts or the reasons we do what we do what we do." This is a recipe for losing folks I believe and we need to do better. I am praying everyday for this for us.

And at age 81 I am doing the best I can to serve the Lord. I STUDY the practices of St Paul and what he taught. It is not missing anything. The Catholic Church does not own the Eucharist. It is not a franchise of the Holy Spirit. Christians have the Eucharist. Religion easily corrupts the Gospel.

You DID leave the true One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and that is your doing.
Why then are you here on a Catholic channel, when you no longer have any interest in Catholicism? Are you looking to see what you’re missing?
The true faith started with the Sacred Deposit of Faith in Jesus Christ Our Lord and God, on which He founded His Church. All breakaway groups are man-made schisms.
You think your faith is full, but the Eucharist subsists only in the original Catholic Church on which you turned your back.
Only the Catholic Church has God’s authority to administer the sacraments and the Eucharist is the greatest of them.

Being that mustard seed with the love of our Protestant brothers and sisters and “letting them figure it out” as you said is like moving that mountain and stirring their spirit which ultimately leads them home in the end. Now I’m on the road to becoming Catholic. Maybe this is the time I can be used as that bridge of unity I’ve been praying about for so long.

    • @theyliveyousleep8965
      @theyliveyousleep8965 6 месяцев назад

For unity to happen, one side would have to bend. The pope has been trying to bring Protestants and orthodox churches back into alignment for decades through varied means, ecumenical councils, etc.
Protestants have been given the facts and biblical teachings over & over again for hundreds of years. They even have the internet to research the thousands of apologetic videos which contain countless facts & explanations. And yet, still to this day, most Protestants believe the lies about Catholicism and continue to hate. Because they’d rather do whatever they want and call it “inspiration from the Holy Spirit.”
It appears that the only way for unity to happen …is if Catholics become Protestant. This couple is doing just that. They are ignoring the pope’s authority and taking it upon themselves to bring their Protestant habits with them to church…laying on of hands, prophesying, pop music, etc.

I do that too! Our Prot Brothers do a pretty good sermon. It always discourages me though when they go on their Lutherian/Prot tirades against the origin church in their insecurity and hate from that element of Protestantism. It gives away at some of the spirit behind what drives them. I am often happy though when I see that the spirit of The Lord seems to drive their sermons… …how does the demon enter them to just rip at the Catholics? It seems kind of like some sort of a selfish insecurity. The only thing they actually ‘know’ about Catholicism, in most cases, is what some other Prot told them about it. Why not just go and actually learn what it is? That’s how I approached my learning about Prots. When they would twist their sermons into an anti-cat tirade I would make the sign of the cross and bite my tongue. Not always easy to do. I don’t go to the Prot services anymore but I do still hear their sermons on YT, I can talk back when they’re being hateful without being disruptive/disrespectful when I listen on YT. 😮

@@MrDoyle07I am a Protestant-well technically evangelical which is different. Never heard the negative comments when I was younger. It’s kind of a recent thing. After the shut downs when my church just decided to stay closed way too long, I found a Calvary Chapel type church with an international online viewership. I had to drive a bit, but the music was fantastic. Only thing that bothered me, was that the pastor regularly threw in an anti Catholic comment that I knew was misled. I started praying for it to stop and that he’d begin to see. Well it is now so much better. Also, it drove me TO the Catholic Church, not away from it. I go to mass now and fill my soul with Jesus. Will be going through RCIA now. I don’t go as often to the big church, but if I do, it’s to sing, ironically, from the joy I have from having found Jesus so beautifully celebrated, better than I imagined, in the mass.

@@loveyourenemy7796 Wow. That was a refreshing read. Usually when those Brothers and Sisters who don't know we are Christians who love Jesus Christ with all our might respond to me it's to tell me Mother Mary is nobody, purgatory is a lie, confession is a false sacrament, the Pope is a lie, etc. I took the Protestant walk-away for a long time. Nothing, eventually, was such a driving force to return to the Holy Family and the Church Christ started than listening to the hatred coming from 'some' of their pulpits. They're not 'all' steeped in hatred, some of it is just misunderstanding and reading the intent of Jesus words differently. I can live with that but, when they start hating and are unwilling to hear other points of view of the very same verses just so they can stay immersed in their hate it frustrates me to a level that makes me have to go to confession because I do not want to suffer from those vitriloic levels of hate. Once we seee something in the scriptures at a whole spiritual level of intent we can't hardly unsee it. I can't go back and do that again. I will have to finish my days as a Catholic. I wish my wife could see what I see but, she can't. When I try to talk to her about the 'why's' of things she doesn't understand I get to see what a possessed person looks like. It can get pretty bad. As a result it will likely be just me sitting there in that pew on Sunday mornings. Anyway, that's the rough part of this, the beauty part is that we will know that we are where Christ wanted us to be when He started His Church in 33AD for us. It has certainly hit rough patches but what can we expect with humans at the administrative wheel; I suspect that is why he said, "The gates of hell will not prevail against it". That means we must be patient in the rough waters, when it's time he will do what He promised. Those gates won't prevail.

If appropriate at all it should be done after the sacrifice of the Mass has taken place and Our Lord has given Himself to all adorers. Prior to that, reverent silence should be the norm, as we should be preparing our hearts and minds to enter into the mystery of Our Lord’s crucifixion and death rather than stirring up human emotions. Consider an assembly of people waiting in a room for a king or head of state to enter. Would loud music and clapping precede his entrance? I think not. How much more does Christ the King of the World deserve our respectful, silent reverence?

We have a wonderful Catholic praise and worship ministry in my country that combines praise and worship sessions with Eucharistic blessing at the end, often including the Eucharist going around (being carried around) so that everyone can have a personal blessing and touch the hem of the Lord's garment literally. I was physically healed in one of such sessions.
The ministry also does other things (evangelization, prayers for healing, serving the poor, prison ministry) and goes around the whole country bringing these sessions to almost every settlement ❤ It's wonderful ❤

@TheCordialCatholic yes 😊 there is also a lot of cooperation with different Protestant ministries. But this is a largely Catholic country, the Protestant churches being in a small minority (but very much on fire) so the situation is a little bit different. I had to learn the American specifics since I have been coming to different online communities. I think I'm still learning to speak the two languages (Catholic and Protestant).

Great to hear you are doing this. I thought it would be great to do this at our local parish as well. Especially for the youth. I will say though this is not new. One I left the Catholic Church at 19 and became a charismatic evangelical I always believed in the unity of our faith. You should look up Father D’Orio. You can see some videos on RUclips. He had a great healing ministry and would have very powerful meetings attended by Catholics and Protestants. He was baptized in the Holy Spirit and was big in the Catholic Charismatic Movement. We would attend ecumenical meetings at a local monastery. Many Catholics and Protestants were having encounters with Jesus and it didn’t matter if you were Catholic or Protestant.

We did this for months and months. My family was getting wary, and I was unwilling to choose. So I let God choose. I prayed, and prayed until I got an irrefutable answer.

I was wondering about their use of the word "worship", because it is my understanding that Catholic worship is the Eucharist, because all worship involves sacrifice. What was explained to me was singing songs is NOT worship. It is praise. Worship is the liturgical and involves sacrifice. Protestants do not really worship, they praise.

The language they use, the emphasis on the Holy Spirit, rather than Jesus, the emphasis on feelings and praise and worship are all remnants of their former lives and I suppose, if they’re talking with other Protestants and speaking their "language", it might help in their mission. But I do truly welcome them home to the church Christ founded!

Really interesting, and encouraging. I've wondered whether there wasn't some role for the "contemporary praise & worship music" (or equivalent cultural expressions) in the Catholic Church, _outside_ of the Mass/Divine Liturgy, such that a culture which spontaneously creates such expressions of love for Christ could find a suitable expression within the Catholic Church.
To be sure, some such songwriting efforts in the last 30 years of North American life have been musically or lyrically bad: Either artistically lame, or sometimes heretical.
I can thus foresee some crusty "get off my lawn" type wishing for P&W music and more-affective expressions in prayer to be excluded from Catholic life altogether, not merely from Mass.
But I think that would be an error. That a thing is sometimes done badly is not an argument for never doing it at all. (If it were, quite likely none of us would have ever been born. ** cough ** )
In a parallel way, Catholic statuary and small-scale devotional objects have often been artistically bad, or used in superstitious ways. Yet these things have found a normative expression in Catholic life wherein the superstitious uses are discouraged and the artistic "groaners" gradually get beat out of the market by better fare.
Could not this same pattern hold true for music, as it already does for (sometimes kitschy) statuary?
I hold that _if some outlet existed_ in normative parish life for music of the P&W variety -- think, perhaps, of parish Bible studies and Catechism classes -- then the artistic talents of Catholics could be encouraged in this direction _for the benefit of the Church._ As it is, parishoners able to sing or play in a popular style unsuited to Mass must channel their abilities into a bar-band, or volunteer as "ringers" in a Protestant P&W service. Is _that_ the best way to manage such gifts, really? To require that their use be stifled, or channeled into _anything but_ the service of the Church?

    • @RedRiverMan
      @RedRiverMan 7 месяцев назад +1

Amen. Why not at Mass though? We do at my parish and it is just as reverent as a Latin Mass for the people who receive it.Most Catholics no longer have a practice of coming to church outside of sundays. There is a solemn praise and worship style that the Holy Spirit is waiting to create in the Catholic church, distinct even and adapted for our tadition. All the forms and practices of the Mass had some more practical reference at the times they came into the cannon of the Mass, from the Kyrie to the Agnus Dei to the washing of the hands by the priest. Catholics who don't receive this have parishes that can feed their spirits where they are. We have a fear of diversity in worship that can border on the idolatrous sometimes.I love the traditional ways but also I am fed by the newer traditions in worship as long as they are genuine and reverent and based in our faiths teachings.

Try understanding, learning the Te Deum. The sacred music of Our Lord's Church is all there already it is from the treasury gathered by Pope Gregory the Great, that is the real praise and worship music not the music from Protestantism and the culture of "me, me me". Be still in the Presence and use Our Lord's Holy Church music which is already there to give honour and praise and glory to Almighty God, the Blessed Trinity.

Their enthusiasm is great and all. They seem lovely. But they’re bringing their Protestant habits and beliefs into the Catholic Church.
There is no “laying on of hands” or giving “prophecies” to each other on Catholicism. Those are psychic tricks…not of God.
Remember, Catholicism don’t interpret the Bible any way they want to …that’s Protestantism, Gnosticism and even New Age beliefs.
Ironic how he pointed out the need for a pope to keep the church united.
But they’re going off and doing their own wills under the guise of “unity.”

@@TheCordialCatholic thanks for the reply. Can you please list any of the catechism paragraphs that specifically support these items? In order for Charismatic Catholicism to be called Catholic, it must still follow the catechism and Church teachings. Both within and without of the Mass… it can not add or modify things and still be called Catholic. This is explained in the Sancrosanctum Concilium of Vatican II.
      1. Laying on of hands.
In the OT, it was for the priesthood or paternal authority. And in the NT, it was only used for healing…and only done by the Apostles. Even exorcists do not lay on hands. Fr Ripperger confirms that laying on of hands for healing follows the structure of authority …. and thus should not be done by the laity unless one has family authority.
*Paragraph 1597 says that the sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred by the laying on of hands.*
      2. Prophesying for others. This can be meant or interpreted in numerous ways. It can mean anything from private revelation (which is revelation related to self, not others) …or it can be New Agism and psychic/spirit communication.
Thus, it is too much of a complicated topic to discuss here. However, most practicing Catholics (& even many Protestants) would agree that allowing other people to tell them what the “Holy Spirit” wants them to know or do can be a slippery slope…there is no way to verify if its from Father God, or even a legit experience in the first place.
*Paragraph 67 says it is the responsibility of the Church to discern and determine if a revelation is an authentic call of Christ or His saints.*

    • @theyliveyousleep8965
      @theyliveyousleep8965 6 месяцев назад

Laying on of hands and prophesying for others are both outside of the scope and responsibility of the followers of Christ. Are we Apostles? Do we have authority over others? Are we qualified to discern the Holy Spirit for others?
These are uniquely Protestant. Most of whom believe it’s ok to “do whatever we want, and assume the holy spirit is guiding us.” Which is why there are thousands of Protestant denominations.
Our job as Catholics is to be obedient and follow Church teachings. Because when we step outside of this, we risk making changes to church dogma and can lead others astray.
Like Fr Reehill explains: if we follow the advice of the ordained Catholic priest…it’s the responsibility of the priest and we are protected. But if we follow the advice of the layperson…we ourselves are responsible.
      .

    • @theyliveyousleep8965

And please know that I don’t presume to know all the ins and outs of the church’s teachings. And I rarely post text about such topics since learning is a life-long process. But this particular topic needs to be considered deeply, the details researched, as it can potentially have some deeper long-term affects. For the laity as well as the church.

    Reasons im not a catholic
There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved.” (Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, 1215.)
“We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.” (Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302.)
“The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.” (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.)
These are de fide, ex cathedra dogmas of Faith. They are the measure. Every teachiing on salvation must conform to them. As Vatican I defined “definitions are by their very nature irreformable.” It is a terrible sin against charity (and truth) to give an impression, nevermind direct assurance, that non-Catholics can be saved without converting. Everyone gets the help of grace to see the true Faith and seek baptism. That is clear from scripture. Saint Alphonsus was saying nothing really new in bringing forth TRUE devotion to Mary, and perseverance therein, as a sign of salvation. Anyone who refuses to believe in Our Lady’s defined titles, and refuses to say the angelic prayer the Hail Mary cannot be saved in that state.
Mary’s intercession is not only useful but necessary for salvation: St. Alphonsus Liguori.
St. Alphonsus de Liguori IT is impossible for clients of Mary to be damned, if they faithfully honor her and commend themselves to her.
St. Anselm "Just as it is impossible for persons to be saved who have no devotion to Mary and are not protected by her, so it is impossible for any who recommend themselves to her, and are therefore watched over by her, to be lost
St. Albert the Great: All those who are not your servants, O Mary, shall perish.
St. Bonaventure: Those who neglect our Lady will die in their sins. Those who do not call on you in life will never get to Heaven.
St. Ephrem calling devotion to our Blessed Lady the charter (or passport) to liberty, and Mary herself the protectress of the damned. Mary has both the power and the will to save us.
Father Alfonso Alvarez claimed the devil told him to "Give up your devotion to Mary, and I will leave you alone."
St. Catherine of Siena claimed God told her, "No one, not even sinners, who devoutly recommend themselves to her, would ever fall into Hell"
Blessed Henry Suso I put his soul in Mary's hands. Therefore, if his Judge wished to condemn him to Hell, her most loving hands would have to handle the sentence.
St. Bonaventure: "In you, O Lady, I have placed all my hopes." I have therefore the utmost assurance that I shall never be lost, but shall praise and love you forever in Heaven.
St. Antonine let all tremble for their salvation who make but small account of their devotion to the Mother of God, or grow careless and give it up: it is impossible for anyone not protected by Mary to be saved

Protestantism out of a rebellion, sunk in Sodom and Divorce, underscored in Gnosticism 1John 2;19, going about in Christian names, unto its many thousands of sects where one does not agree with the other, denotes the many parts that the body of Jezebel ended up torn by dogs, incidentally the source of the prophesied Apostasy theologically in the leavens of the Faith by Faith Only, that James specifically says is not unto mis interpretation Paul (the reason why Martin Luther rejected James cause it was a hinderance to his erranous view of redemption) & the philosophies that arise out of the leavens becomes to another Christ another Gospel Protestantism the Trojan horse of the Apostasy

I always wonder why different people respond differently to the same information. I’ve spent the last dozen or so years doing a deep dive into Catholicism. The Catechism, of course, plus hundreds of articles and podcasts and RUclips videos and books and face-to-face chats. I live in a highly Catholic area, go to a Catholic Bible study, have lots of Catholic friends and neighbors. Most of what I have studied-tens of thousands of hours-has been from a Catholic perspective. I genuinely find it all rather fascinating…but not personally appealing or convincing. I am farther from converting now than when I began, quite a bit farther. I have tried to give Catholicism the benefit of the doubt, actually. In the final analysis, though, I just don’t find it to be true. I’ve shed a lot of misconceptions, but the realities that replaced them were oftentimes worse than the mistaken notions.

Sometimes it's better to stop overthinking. I'm like that too and I was told the same thing (not in this context, I am a cradle Catholic nowhere near to considering leaving, quite the opposite - getting deeper and deeper and more in love with the Church and the faith, the more I learn about it). There may be some emotional or spiritual aspect that's hindering you, not intellectual one. I'm very curious about what it takes to draw people to the Catholic faith so I've been listening to a lot of conversion testimonies and stories but many of them tend to be too much about the intellectual quest, trying to figure out everything, being able to agree with every little aspect of the faith intellectually, but there are also other aspects and ways... the most important of them is the relational aspect of loving Jesus and His Church. Truth is only one part of this. We get drawn to things of God also because of their beauty and goodness, not only because of them being true. Keep asking Jesus, where He wants you to be... He will show you, maybe in an unexpected way. Just follow Him wherever He leads. Like Mary said at the wedding at Cana - do whatever He tells you.

Nothing can compare to the smooth operation of a group that has been focussed on building cohesive unity for thousands of years. So the feelings, connections and more feelings are the drivers…I get that.
The fact that Yeshua taught adult baptism, is not mentioned at all, which memorializes and represents the crucifixion of our flesh (feelings), and JOHN 6:63 perfectly clarifies the fact that the elements of the Communion represent that crucifixion of our flesh and the NEW SPIRITUAL LIFE WE RECEIVE FROM the Lamb of God: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are SPIRIT and life."
Of course, the “hocus-pocus” being taught about the Eucharist is THE INVERSE OPPOSITE OF DOING AWAY WITH THE FLESH BY CRUCIFIXION AND IMPARTING THE HOLY SPIRIT! The Eucharist teaches that inanimate bread and wine become physical flesh and blood!
So-This is the opposite of what Jesus taught! Not to mention their total rejection of the 2nd and 4th commandments, et al.

Why would he have said, “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel-not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power” (1 Corinthians 1:17)? Granted, in this passage Paul is arguing against the divisions that plagued the Corinthian church. However, how could Paul possibly say, “I am thankful that I did not baptize…” or “For Christ did not send me to baptize…” if baptism were necessary for salvation? If baptism is necessary for salvation, Paul would literally be saying, “I am thankful that you were not saved…” and “For Christ did not send me to save…” That would be an unbelievably ridiculous statement for Paul to make. Further, when Paul gives a detailed outline of what he considers the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-8), why does he neglect to mention baptism? If baptism is a requirement for salvation, how could any presentation of the gospel lack a mention of baptism?
Does Acts 2:38 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Does Mark 16:16 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Does 1 Peter 3:21 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Does John 3:5 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Does Acts 22:16 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Does Galatians 3:27 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Baptism is not necessary for salvation. Baptism does not save from sin but from a bad conscience. In 1 Peter 3:21, Peter clearly taught that baptism was not a ceremonial act of physical purification, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. Baptism is the symbol of what has already occurred in the heart and life of one who has trusted Christ as Savior (Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12). Baptism is an important step of obedience that every Christian should take. Baptism cannot be a requirement for salvation. To make it such is an attack on the sufficiency of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings. So, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us, show us, who did? Protestant response. Maybe I am wrong here (it wouldn’t be the first time) but this adorable couple seem to speak of Christian unity solely in terms of union with the Roman Catholic Church as if that is what true unity looks like, namely that we all become Roman Catholic. If that is indeed their point, then I must respectfully disagree. Building bridges of understanding among Christians is a very admirable goal. Building bridges so that you can then convert someone to your particular Christian tradition is not what building bridges should be about. ALL believers in Christ already are united in a real sense not a theoretical one. Believers are united together, with Christ, who is our head, forming a real, living, spiritual organism. We aren’t united to Christ individually; we are united to him corporately. We belong together, and together, we belong to Christ. I think sometimes in ecumenical debates we loose sight of that. Through our union with Jesus Christ through faith, all believers enjoy fellowship with all His people-those who are alive today as well as those who have already gone on to glory. As a Christian, when I am worshiping Christ, when I am in church on Sunday morning, I am enjoying fellowship with Christ, and by the Spirit, I am communing with Jesus. But you, as you visit your church on Sunday morning-which may be a different denomination and may be in a different town from where I live-you also are enjoying fellowship with Christ. Since Christ is able to be present at your church and at mine, and I am linked to Him and you are linked to Him, there is the communion of us together. But that communion is not only a communion of saints living, but we who are united to Christ in this world, also, in at least a mystical sense, are communing with those who have gone before us who are alive and present and abiding in Christ.

So sad to see this evangelical couple become deceived and fall into sin.
    Clement of Alexandria wrote:
"The flesh figuratively represents to us the Holy Spirit; for the flesh was created by Him. The blood points out to us the Word, for as rich blood the Word has been infused into life; and the union of both is the Lord, the food of the babes-the Lord who is Spirit and Word. The food- that is, the Lord Jesus-that is, the Word of God, the Spirit made flesh, the heavenly flesh sanctified…”
    And this:
“Elsewhere the Lord, in the Gospel according to John, brought this out by symbols, when He said: ‘Eat ye my flesh, and drink my blood;’ describing distinctly by metaphor the drinkable properties of faith and the promise ...”
    And this:
“Thus in many ways the Word is figuratively described, as meat, and flesh, and food, and bread, and blood, and milk.”
We should not doubt that Clement viewed the Eucharist as a Sacrament, and yet he described the Sacrament as figurative, as representative, as symbols, and as a descriptive metaphor. This is the historically sound and healthy way to view the Sacrament of Communion. The Eucharist speaks to us richly in symbolic terms, as a sign of what God has done for us in Christ and of who He has made us in Christ. Receiving the Eucharist should stir up our faith and should strengthen our resolve to live for Christ, as we 'replay' in our minds the incredible sacrifice He endured to reconcile us to Himself. When we eat the bread and drink the cup, "we proclaim the Lord's death" and His resurrection. This remembrance and proclamation of faith is the main purpose of the Sacrament. It was not intended that we view bits of bread as "God in the flesh" so that we worship wafers and attempt to ingest God (as if the vast Almighty Creator in physical form could ever fit inside our infinitesimally small mouths).
Jesus did not require us to eat the bread and drink the cup for the purpose of receiving grace, or of receiving His Presence. All Jesus said was, "Do this in remembrance of me." Any Christian who takes communion in remembrance of Jesus and who recognizes the consecrated, ceremonial nature of the bread and wine (not eating them to fill the belly) is in compliance with Jesus' admonition and purpose. Thus, even 'memorialists' partake of a valid communion.
Believing in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is perfectly fine, though. The Anglicans and Lutherans believe that, also. But as a former cradle Catholic, now a Christian attending an Anglican parish, after much study I have learned that the doctrine of Transubstantiation is false and leads Catholics into idolatry of the host. The early church believed and taught that the substances of bread and wine, when consecrated, continue to exist as bread and wine. Transubstantiation teaches that the bread and wine substances cease to exist but for the accidents, and that those substances are transformed into the physical flesh and physical blood of Jesus.
Pope Gelasius: “The sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, which we receive, is a divine thing, because by it we are made partakers of the divine nature. *Yet the substance or nature of the bread and wine do not cease.* And assuredly *the image and similitude of the body and blood of Christ* are celebrated in the performance of the mysteries” (Adversus Eutychen et Nestorium, 14)
Theodoret: “The mystical tokens or sacraments after the Consecration, depart not from their own nature: for *they remain still in their former substance,* and form, and figure.”
Chrysostom: “The very body of Christ itself is not in the holy vessels, but the mystery or Sacrament thereof is there contained.”
And, “The nature of bread remaineth in the Sacrament.”
Augustine wrote much on this subject:
“Our Lord doubted not to say, This is my Body, when he gave a token of his body.”
“Christ took Judas unto his table, whereat he gave unto his Disciples the figure of his body.”
“Unless Sacraments had a certain likeness of the things of which they be sacraments, then indeed they were no Sacraments. And of this likeness oftentimes they bear the names of the things themselves that are *represented by* the sacraments.”
“In sacraments we must consider, not what they be,” (in substance and nature,) “but what they signify.”
“It is a dangerous matter, and a servitude of the soul, to take the sign instead of the thing that is signified.”
“If it be a speech that commandeth, either by forbidding an horrible wickedness, or requiring that which is profitable, it is not figurative: but if it seem to require horrible wickedness, and to forbid what is good and profitable, it is spoken figuratively. Except ye eat (saith Christ) the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. He seemeth to require the doing of that which is horrible, or most wicked: *it is a figure, therefore,* commanding us to communicate with the passion of Christ, and comfortably and profitably to lay up in our remembrance, that his flesh was crucified and wounded for us.”
“It is a more horrible thing to eat man’s flesh, than to kill it: and to drink man’s blood, than it is to shed it.”
“Believe in Christ, and thou hast eaten Christ. For, believing in Christ is the eating of the bread of life.”
Moreover, Augustine made the point that Jesus has ascended into heaven and, according to Scripture, will not be seen again on earth until the Second Advent; at that time, "every eye shall see Him" coming in the clouds. Augustine wrote:
“According to the flesh that the word received : according to that he was born of the Virgin : according to that he was taken of the Jews : according to that he was nailed to the Cross : according to that he was taken down, and lapt in a shroud, and laid in the grave, and rose again, and showed himself. In this respect it is true that he said : Ye shall not evermore have me with you.”
“Until the world be ended, the Lord is above: yet notwithstanding even here is the truth of the Lord. For the body wherein he rose again must needs be in one place.”
Vigilius said likewise: “The flesh of Christ when it was in earth, was not in heaven : and now, because it is in heaven, doubtless it is not on earth.” (Against Eutychus)
Athanasius agreed with this: “Unto how many men could Christ’s body have sufficed, that he should be the food of all the world ? Therefore he made mention of his ascension into heaven, that he might *withdraw them from corporal and fleshly understanding.”*
But Roman Catholics continue to engage in "corporal and fleshly understanding" of the Eucharist!
Exo 20:4,5 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them..."
Lev 26:1 "Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God."
The Israelites created a calf of gold, declared it to be Almighty God, and worshiped it. As punishment, Moses had the calf ground up and made the people ingest the gold.
The Roman Catholics create wafers of bread, declare them to be Almighty God, raise them up in monstrances and worship them. Then they ingest the bread.
By RC Tradition, RCs violate God's commandment to not make a likeness of Him and to not worship man-made objects.
Jesus would never have told His followers to make or worship an object that was said to be Him. Nor would He have wanted them to literally drink blood, an act that is explicitly forbidden (see Gen. 9:4 and Acts 15, for example). Transubstantiation teaches Catholics to worship bread wafers as God and to do what Scripture condemns. That is the main reason why I can never again, in good conscience, receive Roman Catholic Communion.

@@filiamaria8 You wrote: "This One sacrifice is eternally offered to the Father for the salvation of all"
Are you saying that Jesus' sacrifice is ongoing and never-ending? That doesn't seem right. Jesus said on the cross, "It is finished." Hebrews says He now sits at the Father's right hand; one does not sit down while there is work to be done, so when it says He is seated it tells us that the sacrifice is finished and complete.
You wrote: "Do not cherry pick please" Why don't you tell that to your denomination, the church of Rome? They cherry-picked which parts of the early fathers' writings they would use, and which parts they would ignore. They ignore the parts I've quoted, so they can present a theological viewpoint that keeps you, the layperson, tied to them emotionally and contributing financially. The Catholic clergy have a vested interest in obtaining your support, because you help keep them fed, clothed, and housed. They are not a neutral, unbiased source of what the early church taught & believed.
You wrote: "Most of these saints you mentioned have a lot of commentaries and homilies archived in the Catholic church who believe in the Real presence of the Holy Eucharist." You are not seeing the distinction between Real Presence and Roman Catholic Transubstantiation.
Although the early writings can be seen as support for the Real Presence doctrine, those writings contradict Transubstantiation doctrine (which says that the bread and wine cease to be substantially bread and wine, as they become in substance the _flesh and blood_ and soul and deity of Jesus). We can recognize the Body and Blood (the Real Presence) of Christ in the Eucharist without going to the extreme of Transubstantiation. *As has been written on catholic dot com, "The doctrine of the Real Presence is necessarily contained in the doctrine of transubstantiation, but the doctrine of transubstantiation is not necessarily contained in the Real Presence. Christ could become really present without transubstantiation taking place..."*
Tens (if not hundreds) of millions of Christians around the globe believe in the Real Presence and yet believe that the bread and wine endure as bread and wine in addition to becoming for us, Sacramentally, Christ's Body and Blood. Thus they do not worship the wafers because in all good conscience they believe it would be idolatrous. So even when you believe that Christ is Really Present in the Eucharist, it is a sin to direct your worship toward the bread, or even toward the _image of bread._ For even if you believe that the bread is no longer bread in substance, the _image or appearance_ of bread remains, and no Christian should render worship toward images formed by the hand of man. Roman Catholic Eucharistic doctrine is wrong; it teaches the laity to engage in sinful idolatry toward a man-made image of bread (or, if the early churchmen are right, toward bread itself).

Under ordinary circumstances , the faithful reception of the Eucharist is necessary for salvation for those who have reached the age of reason, as Jesus makes clear in
      John 6:
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.” This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
Also it’s important to note that receiving Christ in the Eucharist forgives venial sins(lesser sins) The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, “As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens our charity, which tends to be weakened in daily life; and this living charity wipes away venial sins” (CCC 1394).
However, the reception of the Eucharist does not forgive mortal sins, so a person who is conscious of mortal sin must go to confession before receiving communion. So in a sense the Eucharist doesn’t save us in the same sense other sacraments do. It is needed for us to abide in Christ and for spiritual nourishment.
Also Scripture teaches people are born again in baptism.
The phrase translated “born again” occurs in John 3:3, where Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (KJV). In Greek the phrase involves a pun. The word for “again” is anōthen, which can mean either “again” or “from above.” The point is one must receive a second birth and this birth must be from God.
Context reveals how the second birth occurs. Clarifying his initial statement, Jesus tells Nicodemus, “unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). The reference to water and the action of the Spirit indicates baptism (John 1:33).
Jesus expects Nicodemus to already be familiar with this concept (John 3:10), suggesting an Old Testament background to his teaching. Thus Ezekiel 36:25-27 says that at the restoration of Israel God will sprinkle clean water on people, give them a new heart, and put his Spirit within them so they may keep his commandments, all of which point to Christian baptism.
Further, in the verse immediately after Jesus’ discussion with Nicodemus, John tells us: “After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized” (John 3:22). This, in turn, is followed by a controversy sparked by Jesus beginning to baptize (John 3:23-4:3). The conversation with Nicodemus sets up the controversy.
All this indicates being “born again” in baptism. This is confirmed by other passages, which link the reception of new life and regeneration to baptism.
Thus Paul tells the Romans: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:3-4). And Paul tells Titus that “he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).
