How cervical instability can cause chronic nausea - the relationship between nausea and the neck

  • One of the most common symptoms that our patients with cervical instability complain of is nausea. In this video, Ross Hauser, MD gives an overview of the mechanisms by which cervical instability causes nausea. In our experience, when a person's neck stability and curve are restored, the nausea is typically resolved. Of course, there are many reasons for nausea, but the primary focus of this presentation is the relationship between nausea and the neck.

I love listening to you Ross! I have nausea often but not so severe that I throw up but just enough to make me feel bad all the time. I kept thinking it’s some thing I’m eating but I can’t seem to find any pattern that makes sense. Last week my husband gave me a ride on his motorcycle and when he punched it, it threw my head back and my response was immediate feeling of nausea and dizziness. I have noticed this before and so I am making a connection with what you were talking about. You are too far away for me to come to for evaluation but I am hoping there would be some tips, exercising, Or something I could do to strengthen my neck. I also noticed when I sing while playing my guitar, sometimes I feel lightheaded. I can’t help but wonder if it’s like lack of oxygen to my brain. I’m sure somehow all these things are connected. I so hope you can see my comment and give me suggestions?

This is fascinating. I’ve just come across your videos on cervical instability. I believe this might be what I have! I’ve done all sorts of tests and nobody can tell me why I cannot digest my food and why I’m always bloated and nauseous, fatigued, etc. I’m excited to learn more and to get the motion x-ray. I’ve had this for 6 years (following a bad fall/double whiplash) and I’m very ready to heal and feel better! Do you know of anyone that does this type of assessment and treatment in Ontario Canada by any chance?

I'm 40 yo and never had bloating issues until a couple years ago. I had my MRI of neck in 2015. But bloating started in like 2019. Have you had an MRI done, yet?

Tinnitus gets loud suddenly. I get car sick. The chiropractors I saw ... one hurt me bad doing a bear hug. Another one did feel I had cervical instability. You know your stuff for sure.

Sorry if you've covered it previously, but could you talk about the damage from fluoroquinolones on the joints, tendons and ligaments? Could it possibly lead to causing cervical instability? I listened to one of your other videos on that and every single symptom applies to me and I started having systemic issues 6 years ago from Cipro and more recently my left shoulder seems subluxated and my hips and knees are in agony. I am interested in prolotherapy as a possible therapy for this.

Just over 3 years ago, I started having bouts of nausea and vomiting, when it first began, it would happen ever 8 weeks or so, it presented almost like a stomach bug, except I noticed when this occurred I always had neck pain, at the base of my neck where my neck meets the head, I was sent for endoscopies , ultra sound on gall bladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, no answers , then Covid stopped all tests , by now I am sick almost weekly, waiting now for gastric emptying test and barium follow , however I really feel the problem is coming from my neck, I am beginning to feel that I can’t go on like this, it’s so miserable , especially since losing my husband to Covid in the middle of all of this, I just am so fed up of feeling and actually being sick, it’s like the severe morning sickness I experienced when I had my children, but there was a reason for the nausea then, this nausea has no reason , I just want to know if the neck pain could mean that this nausea is a neck problem and not a stomach one, as gastrologist just isn’t able to find a cause with the stomach

I went to a chiropractor and he gave me a neck adjustment. After that I started feeling dizziness and nausea. It doesn't go away. It's been affecting my life bigtime. I have never felt this way before until after that neck adjustment. What can be done to fix this problem. I constantly feel pressure in my head like I'm light headed as well. I know this problem is coming from my upper neck area. I can feel it in there. And no matter what kind of stretching or massaging I do, nothing helps. I just want my life back. I have such immense neck and head pain and stiffness that I am not only nauseous but I’m vomiting throughout the day, my head feels like it’s going to break open. I can’t function and nothing stops the pain.
My dr told me the body is saying; “I’m in so much pain that I’m about to faint, but I will vomit to give myself some relief”. I’m told this type of pain issue can cause a stroke. That’s so scary.
I recently had a car accident and X-rays showed C1 & C2 are fused, not sure how that happened, but the accident has aggravated my neck and now I have this debilitating pain.
Is there any treatment or cure for this particular issue?

We do not know of any other office that does the same variety of motion diagnostics or has the same level of experience with Prolotherapy for the neck. However, you may find an upper cervical chiropractor who might do some curve analysis and be able to help her with alignment or curve issues. We understand travel is not feasible for everyone nor can we accept all cases, but if travel was possible in the future, we'd be happy to review her case in greater detail. For now, we wish you and your family all the best in health as well as with your search! Take care.

My question is, did the fall set up the spondylosis or contribute to the worsening symptoms?

Hello, I once commented on a video of yours regarding the vegaus (spell ck) nerve. Now, I’ve seen a neurologist who put me on meds, eventually wanted me on medical marijuana, I’ve seen 3 EnT’s and had been determined it is not my ears. I’ve seen family dr of course can’t help. I’ve seen an orthopedic-spine/neck dr recently had an MRI showing normal of the cervical. However, just recently I am having once again dizziness, vertigo, continued ringing in ears(about a year now, maybe antidepressant med don’t know) and today started to get nauseous. The doc says to see well a neurologist ugh 😩 no one has yet to mention this nerve you have mentioned before nor have they mentioned cervical instability. I do have mild disc issue in lumbar which has yet to be addressed so when I was working and sitting at desk my neck and lumber were having a field day with me! So much I had to quit my job. When this started a few years back my left eye blacked one for a few seconds…I was treated months later for migraines. I am also currently having muscle twitches from time to time in different areas particularly around my legs. So, is it possible I have a pinch nerve? Can this not be seen in an MRI? Or is this the vegous nerve? HELP-

@@simpayshenaides thank you. It has been horrible. I do not enjoy any food at all. Chocolate milk is about it. I take anti nausea medication most days, it was very hard living in pain and nauseated as well as many other symptoms, I went through a lot of heartache feeling so miserable all the time, but I really had to mentally be strong and I’ve learnt to not try to focus on it now. I can’t let it get to me, I’ve just come out of a depressive episode and I refuse to let it beat me. X

@@simpayshenaides oh really! Yes it does get you down doesn’t it. You do not realise how much something like this effects your joy. What is it that you think triggered your nausea? Have you had tests done? Do you try any anti nausea medication? It can make you feel terrible I totally understand and I hope that you can get some relief and some help with your problem. I’m so sorry. I really understand how hard it is. Hugs to you xxx
