Yes he did and I love Ben for it he said it gave the Darkling some humanity and showed his feelings for Alina were genuine. Despite him manipulating Alina from day one.
The more funny thing is that they scented this scene at first and then the First kiss scene 😂😂😂😂😂

The Winter Fete scene was more relevant in the book.
In the original trilogy the Darkling was always that cold, intimidating, unforgiving and calculated leader, but his attraction to Alina was his weak point, which made him act irrationally in key moments of the series.
The passionate scene between they two was a symbolic one, in which his vulnerability is revealed to us for the first time. He had two choices - Alina or the Deer. Alina was love, the Deer was power. "The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak". He was going to claim her, but their moment is interrupted and he returns to his responsibilities and the Deer. He choose power over love.
He was a creature who lived hundreds of years and killed hundreds of lives for his purposes, he had become hungry for power no matter how well-intentioned his actual desires were. And even if he really loved Alina, it was just an obsessive love caused by the loneliness of immortality. He wanted her just like him - devoid of moral values, removed from people and their short lives, reconciled to the idea of eternity. He wanted her to give him power.

"What is Infinite?" was the key question in the entire trilogy, the reason why Morozova had created the amplifiers, why the Darkling wanted to expand the Shadow Fold, why Alina was at one point struggling with the hunger for power.
In addition, the Darkling has in the books a series of memorable quotes that deserve to be hung in the frame, but instead of respecting the dark version of the character they prefer to sweeten him until he becomes a kind of tragic hero.
@@aliciavance4228 yes this!! i rlly love ben barnes and all but i think in casting someone so handsome and alluring, as well as charming couldve worked to the shows advantage sm more gad they not decided to soften him up into this sad simp for alina. like ben himself was a perfect casting, but they should’ve had him act as cold and conflicted as he did in their books :/
I haven't read the books but watching the show it all looked so rushed idk what to expect from season 2. The characters do not have any depth neither does Alina and darkling's relation. The entire plot looks like it happened within just a week. The actress still gave Alina a personality otherwise she literally has no character development i hear they'll have 8 episodes for season 2 as well which the 2nd season will be just as rushed as the 1st one.

Spoilers- the king of scars sort of redeemed him a bit. Just a tiny bit, The Darkling desperately wants to be the hero of Ravka but bc how he uses others he is more like an anti hero, he did save Ravka for centuries building the army and all.
Same I kinda what him to have like a redemption arc 😂

He started as mysterious character that is charming and mischievous, then turned out to be the villain that is manipulative and ruthless, and lastly revealed that underneath it all lies a boy that doesn't want to be alone and just wants someone to be with him in the darkness. That's how I view the darkling in the books. I haven't seen the show and I hope they still got it down to a tee

Pissed that they revealed his name tho, Aleksander was supposed to be a mystery and a luxury that only Alina could afford with that scene on book three. It gaves away a big deal to the greatness of their connection, even if she chose not to be with him. Soulmates epiphany! And the quote "The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak" is the best that the Darkling has ever said, mad that they didn't include it as well. I hope season 2 do us right 'cause I honestly don't know what to do if the whole of it consists of Alina running away from him. We need them spark and chemistry.

I've just finished the trilogy and I absolutely love their chemistry even in the book. Book Mal was meh tho. Darkling all the way.
@@saminasamad3153 I mean kinda. Not really chemistry I'd say, more like something that was once a connection is now a string that now wavers but is still tethered til the end. I would say the context with how he and her got close in the third book but that would be spoilers if you haven't read the books. They really are good, and the ending is tasteful. At least for me it is, I'm not sure how other people feel about it.

Tbh I wasn’t a huge fan of the shadow and bone trilogy beyond the first book, but this show was an excellent adaptation!! Really wonderfully done and it’s always satisfying when a movie or show gets a book just right.

During the whole last episode I kept saying ‘they just need to cut off his hand’ lol. Darkling was such a cool and compelling character, but he got creepy real quick. I’m glad Alina was the one to free herself.

I’ve watched the series a few times now and I ship darklina simply because their chemistry is on point! Also the fact it’s Ben Barnes and he’s gorgeous 😍 I’ve just started the books (on like pg 105 of sab) as I read SoC duology and adored it, and the darkling so far is def not as ‘nice’ as he is in the show so I totally get why ppl don’t ship them in the books. Mal isn’t as nice either though...tbh I ship Genya and Alina
