so true I haven’t read the books (I loved the show so definitely buying the books) I tend to always like the bad guys/villains but I could not like Darkling, he makes a great villain but what he did to Alina is just terrible I don’t understand how people can want them to be together. The whole show all Mal’s done is look after his best friend the hate he gets is odd.

You know, mal is actually not all that bad in the books, people just make him seem so bad, plus the books are in alina’s POV - a person who just happens to ship Malina
true2.. i cant understand why people exaggerate mal in books..i think he just fine and have his own reasons ..but he always stay by her side no matter what.maybe sometimes jealousy and insecurity gets through him but he never truly leave alina.. i mean during second book mal and alina are not always together alone..alina lead the grisha and seen close to nikolai while mal just play her guard..can you imagine..powerful girlfriend and a prince charming while he just an ordinary army.i understand his feeling. in the third book i just feel bad for him..when they at the mountain..he so excited to show the beautiful thing that nikolai made to see that alina and nikolai holding arms walking at stairs..then he pretend to go somewhere else.during that same time nikolai and alina kiss..i feel really bad for mal
but im glad they are endgame though..they always meant to be together.. alina's power attract the darkling and nikolai but mal always with her since day one. i cant understand why people hate mal so much so they can ship alina and the darkling.

Is kind of weird people saying “book Mal was so bad they changed him in the series” when also saying “the darkling was portrayed perfectly” when the darkling deviates from the books even more than Mal does in order to 1) fit Ben Barnes’s acting and 2) to make him way least bad.

I think it’s pretty clear that Season 1 is framed as their love story, with episodes being narrated by their letters, the repetition of the “true North” line, the way Alina only really fell for Darkling because she thought Mal had abandoned her, etc.

Mal and Alina for sure weren't very healthy for a majority of the books. Mal's behavior in particular was not healthy and neither of them communicated well at all. Darklina is morally bad but Malina isn't perfect hunky dory until post trilogy. And even then, it still doesn't address the issues of communication. Both the Darkling and Mal romanticize Alina in one way or another. Nikolas does the same to her as well. They all fixate on her power for one reason or another and cause Alina to doubt what and who she is. Mal is deeply insecure once Alina gets her power. That insecurity doesn't go away until she gives up that power completely and we've seen what happens to Grisha when they don't use their power. They become ill and weak. What does the loss of her power actually mean for her health and future? Is it just a convenient plot device to destroy a bad guy who ends up coming back anyways? Where are the repercussions? I don't think Alina will be off scotch free for the rest of the series. Bardugo doesn't just leave actions be without consequences. Like David, Matthais, Kaz, Jesper, Nikolas, Nina, Kuwei, etc.
(And this is why Zoyalina and Genyalina are more up my alley as both enemies to lovers and friends to lovers tropes respectively. Neither Genya or Zoya ask Alina to change for them or compromise an integral part of herself in the trilogy and they don't idealize her or her position when she has power or does not have power.)

i just hope they didn't kiss or end up confessing their real feelings for each other in this season to keep us waiting for a second one, bc the way they look at each other's eyes just DRIVE ME CRAZY
they're so cute and perfect together, they've been by their side all along from childhood. And as people says in the books they actually are endgame so I can't wait to see that in a second season💜💜💜

I watched the show first and I loved Darklina and Malina but then I read the books and I became such a HUGE Malina stan (even though the end of the third book kinda made me ship Darklina, too)

3:45 this is when i know they SHOULD be endgame, I thought they’re about to kissing bcs Mal’ll be dead and Alina should start without Mal bcs after this scene all i could remember was they’re being happy together and it make sense if he dies bcs before this they have a really somehow this connection, that’s why after i knew Mal’s not dead all i could wish is they’re being together.
