  • For a long time I've been listening to people talk about things in review videos without knowing all the details. I'd like to dispel some myths/rumors and give some love to both sides of the race!
    Whether or not you own an Oculus Rift or an HTC Vive you are lucky and have an AMAZING piece of hardware.
    If you want to more about my thoughts I will be publishing an article soon on VRSPIES.com going more in depth about my experience using each headset.
    Quick Message From RCVR!
    "Thanks for watching my video, really I mean it! I hope it had enough silliness to make you laugh, but not too much that I annoyed the crap out of you. Last thing I wanna do is scream in your ear and piss you off... you're my friend and I want you to come back and see more of my vidz)) I plan on releasing all types of different videos in a variety of formats, almost always related to technology or gaming, but sometimes it will be about real life and interesting topics that I want to take on. As I said before I really appreciate your view, feel free to message me or comment if you would like any help with product or development promotion. I love helping others and connecting with interesting people in the community! Also, if you think that I could help you with some graphic design or video editing let me know, I do it everyday!

      well right now it doesn't work, so there's that. It's very fidgety to set up, and updates to any surrounding software fucks everything up. It isn't a consumer unit so I didn't expect that experience either, but it almost seems like they are making it difficult to use on purpose lol

    Good debate mate. I personally think once the official touch controllers are out, the rift will be the better hmd. Only thing that will let it down will be the company itself.

    Also if your looking just 1 to 1 at the screen I would agree with you that the Rift looks a little bit sharper, but there are so many prices you pay for that, and you would realize that if you had both to use on a regular basis. Geometric distortion / pupil swim is a pretty big issue on the rift, it may be something you dont notice now but one day you will. I played for 2 weeks without noticing and I could probably ruin it for you right now. Look at a wall in say Chronos something static, move your head so the wall goes from your peripheral vision into the center of your vision and back. Do you see the wall moving? Unless you have your headset on in a very very very small sweet spot which you will not get right everytime you will see that. As many have pointed out the sweet spot for visual clarity may be slightly bigger on the rift but when you take into account things like geometric distortion its much much smaller. Also red tint , sure you only see it during black screen, or do you? Go into a cave at night in mine craft , you see it when the rifts mura correction is on. This is something Valve fixed with the Vive a while ago.
    The amount of choice supportive bias's you exhibit in this video is very glaring "i think I made the better choice" etc you only talk about things that are better in the Rift even though you claim to be unbiased because you have tried both. Its really silly. If you said negative things that where untrue about the rift I would be calling you out in the same way but you didn't say anything negative about the Rift. Im not more pro Vive or Rift but I am pro realist something you try to claim to be at the beginning of this video and it just isn't true if you really look at the reasoning and frustration that caused you to make this video its all rooted in Choice supportive Bias with a tad of fanboyism.
    You literally said at one point that your set up was just as good as a vive, do you think anyone buys that? 2 wired hydras that you have to drag around on a guitar stand and one rift sensor? Come on man.....
    Not to mention Chaperone..... Its just not realisitic for the rift to have Room scale this generation. Not saying it cant be done but games for the rift specifically will not be designed for it, and most people simply will not do it.

    • @robocow2
      @robocow2 8 лет назад

      I caught that. this video is very "I'm not bias, but I prefer the Rift"

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад +1

      of course i have a preference! wow they are diferrent, but that doesn't mean they aren't both amazing and I wouldn't be just as happy to have a Vive.. understand? Like I prefer Mountain Dew to Pepsi, but I still drink Pepsi all the time man...

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      The HMD's are different and the Vive is better from room-scale, having said that the video was a response to people saying "you CANT" stand up or walk around. I showed that you can. That is the whole point of the video.
      The things I say about the HMD's themselves are clearly my opinion and meant to be viewed as such. I was asked to say what i felt based on things I experienced. I use the CV1 and hydras daily and I am loving it, I don't need to convince anyone.
      As far as Chaperone that is a SteamVR feature and every SteamVR feature works with the rift.
      I develop in VR and know many developers working with both HMD's, the overall consensus is that we have two nearly identical devices.

    Hello I recently bought an htc vive and I do like it very much, but my main concern is comfort and the ridiculous time it takes to set up. Today is my last day that I can return it and I was thinking about buying a rift and the touch controllers when they come out. But I really love the games I have in steam vr and I dont want the money I spent on them to go to waste. Ive seen some people on youtube play steam vr games (made for the htc vive) using oculus touch. I was wondering if you are able to use touch to play all vr games in steam even though the game says it only supports the vive. Please help thanks.

  • @icon176
    @icon176 8 лет назад +1

    Imo the CV1 aint made with roomscale in mind.
    That its fairly obvious if u look at the games on oculus home.
    That being said its not a bad HMD at all.
    And for sitdown it prolly got the edge in regards of comfort.
    But the tech that is tracking is older and the lightroom is a impressive piece of hardware.
    Ofc the camera can track okish if ur takin precations, but u really need 3 cameras for a good experience with the touch.
    Rift is good, and when u bought the touch and 2 cameras, prolly equally good at tracking as Vive.
    So either HMDs work great.
    The main issue im having right now aint the hardware in the CV1, but the company, the DRM, or atleast their ambition to have one
    It is dividing the community...and that is sad.
    Its like buying a monitor and getting locked out bcause of the brand?
    Plz oculus, dont divide our beloved PC community, its allways been and should be a open platform.

    • @sirgriffinman
      @sirgriffinman 8 лет назад

      except if you buy the oculus touch controllers you get another sensor and that package can do what the vive does. My question is can the oculus do the grid system that the vive does to show the boundaries. That is the one thing I am not sure about whether or not the oculus team have a feature coded like that.

    The fact of the matter is Oculus didn't intend for the device to do room scale initially, and they seem to have fixed the issue.
    I want to see evidence that the device doesn't break when subjected to the abuse that inevitably accompanies roomscale. I've smashed my vive into the walls many times and it's just a sturdy piece of equipment because of the shell it has around it (which does make it heavier)

    I am going to go against the flow and suggest a bit of a reality check.I have a Rift, Vive, DK1, DK2 and GearVR. For me it is blatantly misleading to define any tracked volume to be 'room scale'. Nor is that what Oculus is publicly pushing for in wanting forward facing interactions only, which is not the same as building for 360 degree experiences in large volume spaces.I do think the Rift is a well designed HMD. But when talking about great design I find it amazing that the elegant simplicity and scalability of Lighthouse for its intended purpose, large volume room scale tracking of multiple objects, is not given equal design credence.The Rift is great for its intended purpose, but lets not pretend it is equally impressive outside of that envelope, particularly when the exact widespread availability, cost and capability of Touch are not yet known. Whatever anyone thinks of Touch at this point in time is pure speculation, other than if you happen to be an anointed developer who has prototype access.

    • @RealityCheckVR

      absolutely) great comment! I just stated my opinion after playing every major game I can think of)

    • @PCproffesorx
      @PCproffesorx 8 лет назад

      Completely agree, as an owner of both the Rift and the Vive I found this video very misleading. I pretty much said the same thing in my long winded comment above. The Rift is not targeting room scale and room scale will be a less than elegant solution for the Rift for the people that choose to use it that way. It wont be as easy or track as much volume as Lighthouse.

  • @MrSquishedsquashed
    @MrSquishedsquashed 8 лет назад +1

    Honestly from a technical perspective I prefer the Vive's outside in tracking and I really like the design of the motion controllers for the Vive (had a chance to try Oculus touch and the Vive while demoing a game at conventions).
    However from a financial perspective I just bought an OSVR and a leap motion sooooooooooooo it doesn't really matter!

    • @MrSquishedsquashed
      @MrSquishedsquashed 8 лет назад

      ***** I'll take the completely locked tracking from lighthouse tracking and the multi functional touch-pad on the Vive controllers over the temperamental and often gimmicky gesture recognition (not many games use GR for anything worthwhile) and standard IR tacking from the Touch any day.
      Add that to the fact it feels like tracking was added the two halves of an Xbox controller and it's honestly not very comfortable to hold it really puts me off Touch.
      I know the Vive controllers just seem like flattened tubes of plastic for the most part but they are comfy flattened tubes of plastic. They sit nicely in the hand, all the buttons are easily accessible and give good tactile feedback.
      The only place the Touch has the edge is in appearance, to say it's 'vastly superior' in function is just straight up not true.
      Once again though,they're both fine for VR, in fact they work great and if you offered me the Touch over the leap motion I'm using to emulate controllers (budget constraints) at the moment I'd accept it in a heartbeat!
      However if I had the money to buy for myself I would go straight for the Vive.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      I do agree both hmd's are great! Having used the Vive a lot this last month, I can honestly say that the Rift is hands down more comfortable for my head. The weight gives me head pains in the back. Still I often push through. I do like the robust feel of the Vive controllers, but they are also MUCH heavier than the touch controllers and tracking is not an issue. If I am playing long term I want my rift and touch. I like the vive for sword battles) I can honestly say that when I played 5 hours of onward using the touch I never had to think about holding my controllers.. it just happens.. whereas when I play with the vive controllers I am always keen NOT to drop them. You cannot rest your fingers without dropping them so I am always using the straps, regardless of the motion controllers)

  • @netgeek3010
    @netgeek3010 8 лет назад

    The differences are negligible given that they bought buy their displays from the same source and same type. Both using Samsung OLED display technology. Oculus was working on weight and size by spending a great deal of time with the optics and using very high end optics specifically to make the headset smaller and lighter. The HTC Vive was targeted for room scale by adding a front camera and having the ability to ID objects in the room by providing outline view of the object within your screen. I think front camera is a nice feature especially if you cannot make a perfectly clear room where you may have a chair within the 10 or 15 foot room. I like the size of the touch controllers on the Oculus VS the larger ones of the HTC Vive. It also seems like the Touch has additional options for finger movement.

  • @OTPulse

    How well will Rift work with these tether free back pack systems coming out if the USB cameras will need to be attached to the back pack unit? I have tried the Rifts tracking and its top notch just like Vive's but for expandability it is kinda lacking.
    And I have no issue with Vive feeling like it will come off, have you adjusted the centre top head strap so the Vive holds the back of your head and not the top? My main gripe with Rift is the face padding doesn't absorb sweat as well as Vive cushions and I wouldn't want sweat getting into the head set. But everything else about the Rift was easier to adjust, the inbuilt headset is very convenient, I ended up buying a Philips SHS5200/28 headset that wraps around the back and velcro strap to secure it for my Vive. Its almost the same as Rift, almost lol.
    The hydra thing is totally ace, have linked this video to a friend with Rift, hope they are easy to get.

    Have you even played 360 games like Holopoint or Brookhaven experiment and had no loss of controller tracking? Also how do you walk around without a chaperone system? I have both my oculus is just collecting dust, even when siting down I like the Vive the screen is brighter making everything look more natural less gray like the oculus.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      I have, using the Hydras its simple enough because the tracking doesnt need cameras. Usually I just am careful and I know where I am in my room, but when I play steamvr games the chaperone system is still there for me just the same. For developing the lightweight oculus is fine) still I wish I had a Vive also so I could do some development with it as well. Using two trackers and touch I can move about my room without issues)

  • @bigsykedaddy999
    @bigsykedaddy999 8 лет назад

    No one is arguing that the Rift HMD can't be tracked very well. We are arguing that once the touch controllers come out you are going to need an active USB cable to run the second camera to the opposing corner of the room. Not many people will do this and Oculus doesn't recommend it so not many devs will develop full 360 room scale games for Oculus Home.
    Sure you will get some steam games which are awesome, but keep in mine the shape of the touch controllers lend themselves to occlusion the way they are designed. There is a video from the Dev of fantastic contraption who set up a roomscale example with Touch and he loses tracking of his controllers when he is about 5 feet away from the second camera.
    That is what we are arguing, that with Touch it won't track as well as the Vive and to even get it set up correctly people are going to have to buy a long active USB 3.0 cable to run the camera to the opposing corner. That is the argument.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад +2

      for sure! , they are not the same, no doubt, we all have out OWN opinions as I said, still I'm just saying people shouldnt be saying it 'CAN'T' track around the room. Not ever saying the vive isn't obviously different. No need for wars, simply discussions) Don't you like the look of the rift? lol I just wanna play games with my bros!!!!

    • @bigsykedaddy999
      @bigsykedaddy999 8 лет назад +1

      Reality Check VR I completely hear you man. I think the people who are saying that the Rift can't be tracked around the room are confused. It's more about Touch not having 360 tracking out of the box.
      I am still trying to decide whether I should keep both HMD's or sell both and wait to see what happens or what. I am having a very very hard time to decide lol.
      If I could have the Rift HMD with the Vive's FOV and longer cable / laser tracking I would have an easy decision.
      I have literally been stressing about what I should do lmfao... I think everyone should stop arguing too and just support VR as a whole.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      Totally! I can honestly say I wouldn't know what to do if I had both.. I wouldn't give up my Vive and it's motion controllers for my life! And the Rift is just so sleek and clear... ugh Gen 2 will really be the best time!!! hah

      In this video the guy says he is using a BAD usb cable and that it is flickering telling him to replace it. He also mentions several times throughout the video that he loses tracking because of the far camera that has a BAD usb cable. This video cannot be used to show anything other than it is highly effective even with a BAD usb cable))

    • @bigsykedaddy999
      @bigsykedaddy999 8 лет назад

      Reality Check VR I guess but I asked him recently how it went with the new cable he said he was going to get and he told me he had a similar problem. I guess we'll see when it comes out.
      If you watch the video though he is facing the camera with the good USB cable when he loses tracking (unless I'm remembering wrong)
      Anyway I hope Touch can do as well as the Vive in room scale because I really do prefer the Rift HMD over the Vive (except for the Vives FOV)
      Good video btw.

    I was told by multiple people by force, HTC Vive is better. It has room scale and oculus rift can not do that! HTC Vive is better because you have a bigger field of view! HTC Vive is better because Oculus rift is not in stores and did not ship it to me when they said they would! HTC Vive is better because they have CONTROLLERS! Oculus rift just uses a xbox controller! HTC Vive is better because Oculus rift will be spying on you with constant connect, Face book is evil! The only thing I like about the HTC Vive is that it has that little camera on the mask. Neat idea. Oculus please copy this. :)

      As far as I know the Vive cannot detect things in your room. The SteamVR software allows for chaperone boundaries to be set and that works exactly the same on both HMD's. Originally people were buying Hydras for $50 so there a lot of people whom already had them that would be able to use it without buying new hardware.

    Hey dude, I have the Hydra and CV1 and let me tell you, the tracking is not sub-millimeter like the Vive controllers, not even close. I can appreciate the effort, but the experience is sub-par at best. BTW, tech support at Oculus is saying the ideal tracking from headset is 3Feet, anything further then that is not supported at all if you have tracking issues.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      Hey Paulo, I'm not trying to confuse anyone here. The Hydras and the Vive controllers are most DEFINITELY comparable when used properly and without interference. I have had this confirmed by many people including VRGAMERDUDE & IMMERSIVEGAMER83. Many people using a Hydra experience some sort of signal interference such as plasma tv's, washing machines, microwaves, and being to close to certain power centers.
      If you have not had great experiences with the Hydra it is typical that you have either a broken device or have interference otherwise you would see great tracking)
      As far as Oculus, the tracker is stated to be "AT LEAST 3 ft away" meaning 3ft and further!) So it doesn't track well closer than 3ft, get it? Simply a matter of physically being able to see you or not. I can walk 15ft away and still be tracked) I've also proven this and more a few times.
      I don't want misinformation, but it's silly to tell me things aren't the way I see them. I'm a bit competitive and I have placed on the scoreboards in many online 'vive' games. This is because the Hydra controllers work GREAT!
      Of course I'd rather just have a Vive to play Vive games, but it certainly is not necessary and it is good for people to know this)

    Sorry. But this smacks of an Oculus fanboy trying to defend his platform of choice.. "it does room scale just fine" followed by caveat after caveat.. The only problem is this, as long as you don't do that. in the end though, to make such an assertion before Touch even has a release date is presumptuous.
    Fact is, with Constellation, tracking accuracy degrades exponentially, whereas lighthouse tracking accuracy degrades in a more linear manner, which gives it a far greater maximum range. The reason you get exponential accuracy falloff past the optimal
    range with the Constellation optical tracking system, is that the LED's start to converge more often on the same pixels (as seen by the camera) and the distance represented by a single pixel increases. Lighthouse does not have this disadvantage.. This lesser range, when combined with the narrower cone shaped field of view for the Oculus camera results in more of a "sweet spot" than the open sensing range afforded by lighthouse..
    Also, constellation's camera requires USB3.0 connection to your PC. USB 3.0 cables are limited to 3 meters before active repeaters are needed. This is probably why even Oculus themselves seem to be targeting a standing, front facing experience with the two cameras in a stereo configuration up front in their demo kiosks, rather than a front and back surround setup for true room scale.
    But again, Touch isn't out yet.. So we don't know. I could be as good as Vive's room scale... But considering the tech, I doubt it will.

    • @mortenthomsen2279
      @mortenthomsen2279 8 лет назад +1

      The Rift does room scale but yes it has more limitations than Vive. Rift constelation doesn't have as much range as lighthouse, but what if some other technology comes and has even greater range, will that mean that Vive no longer does room scale.
      I've been following these discussions since the beginning and 95% to 99% argued that the Rift wouldn't do room scale at all, and the tracking wouldn't work that well and so on. Well, the HMD in itself tracks very well, even with fast movements. Many sources has also tried Touch and report great perfomance. I could go on but this is pointless.
      Why do you even go on here to talk the Rift down even though all flaws are known, everything is out in the open, and every roomscale demonstration shows it's boundries and issues. You just don't want anybody to talk positively about the Rift, without announcing the Vive far superior, or at least that is the impression i get. Vive is only superior in one way, tracking. The tracking is undoubtebly better.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад +2

      I've tried both and like them both. I have tried Vive tracking and had great experiences but also seen glitches and loss of tracking when moving in different ways. It is not perfect. At my home I have the CV1 and Touch controllers. I can walk all over my room and even touch the floor and ceiling without issues. If the trackers see me then I am tracked.. same for both systems within 20ft. This is my personal experience. My room is at least 15ft by 20ft and yes my oculus has extensions. BTW you can go 5 meters with USB 3.0 before needing added power. If needed you can extend USB 3.0 reliably up to 40+ ft. I have done this to test)

  • @ExZero16
    @ExZero16 8 лет назад

    You are correct and the Oculus will track you around a room but the biggest thing it is missing is the chaperone system. I would not be comfortable moving quickly around a room in VR without something telling me my boundaries. I could not play a game like holopoint or battledome in the Oculus. I have both systems and I love my Oculus for Cars and elite (more comfortable and better optics) but comfortable and safe room scale like the Vive is a no go in the Oculus. I'm sure Oculus will fix this in the future but I don't it is happening for the CV1 (IMO). If you are debating on what headset to buy and want room scale, get the Vive. If you want the most comfortable and looks the best (vision in the HMD) get the Oculus. Be careful out there guys!

    • @BlazerJake
      @BlazerJake 8 лет назад +1

      Valve themselves have publicly stated that their own chaperone system currently works for the Rift, but until the Touch comes out you're not able to manually draw out the chaperone area.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      Every single game that you play with chaperone system in the Vive.. which is all of them, ALSO work the SAME in the Rift headset. When I play Holopoint, Raw Data, Battledome, etc. I always have chaperone working. There are developer hacks to do it without any controller using the Rift. Otherwise you can also do it with a Leap Motion, Razer Hydras, or Touch Dev Kits. My "safe" play space is 3m x 2.5m. Hope this helps clear some things up!)

    I actually own both, I havent just "tried both" I own both of them. I agree with you on comfort for the most part. In terms of tracking though there really isnt a debate lighthouse is simply a better tracking technology for the current state of VR. I would like you to try something. Stand lets say 2-3 feet away from your rift sensor and have the side of your head pointed directly at the sensor. If I want to I can make the Rift lose tracking very easily doing what I just described. I have a VERY hard time making the Vive lose tracking, it can glitch out for a second sure, but actually losing tracking once I am in game, its almost never happened. I also think that you probably wouldnt know if you had lost tracking for half a second while moving because the Rift does nothing to show you you have lost tracking, it just loses 6 Dof and goes to 3 Dof and then switches back when it finds tracking again, there is no visual cue and if you are just turning your head at the time it loses tracking you wouldn't even notice.
    All of this is besides the point, how many people do you think are going to beable to run a cord to the other side of their room that is also plugged into their PC? Its just not going to happen and it is the exact reason the Rift is mostly targetting 180 degree experiences or maybe 360 degree standing experiences. GUARANTEED when that second sensor ships with Touch controllers the explanations for how to set it up will be to put one on each side of your desk. Job sim changed their game to 180 for oculus touch putting most of the interactions in a 180 degree semi circle in front of you, that doesnt mean you cant turn around, it just means tracking is not going to be consistent enough to leave it like that for the average set up.
    I love my rift and I personally think the touch controllers are going to be better than the wands in some ways, I use my Rift probably even more than I use my Vive, but I am not delusional about certain things, like the fact that Oculus isnt going to tell people to run a cord across their play space that people will likely trip over to put the other sensor on the other side of the room. When people say the technology doesnt allow it, it has as much to do with the fact that the Rifts tracking sensors are not wireless and need to be plugged into a computer as anything else. Oculus is not targetting room scale. That doesnt mean you cant do it, they just are not targeting that market and for anyone wanting to do room scale without hassle they SHOULD get a Vive, its as simple as that, and saying otherwise is disengenous.
    Also I think its a little hard to be unbiased when you only own one, as much as people try and fight it everyone has choice supportive Bias whether they think they do or not. Thats why I own both, I didnt want to be having to fight one fight like you are doing right now to "justify your purchase" , especially in going to lengths that 99% of customers are not willing to do to support it, like using hydras on a guitar stand that you drag around to "simulate roomscale"

    Don't you have any problems with tracking when facing away from the camera? I've read several people having the tracking get wobbly when being more than about 1.5 meters away and facing away from the camera. Haven't thought to try it myself even if I've had the CV1 for a few days now.

    • @PCproffesorx
      @PCproffesorx 8 лет назад

      The thing with the rift is it doesnt let you know when you have lost tracking it just switches from 6 degrees of freedom to 3 degrees of freedom (aka basically gearvr tracking) I totally notice that my rift gets wobbly even when im close to the sensor but only if the side of my head is facing the sensor , if im turned all the way around its not too bad but it gets wobbly the further away you go. Honestly this guy is just looking for confirmation bias that he bought the right product and then trying to prove it to everyone else. We wouldnt even be able to tell if he lost tracking by looking at game footage so its no proof whatsoever that he didnt lose tracking at some point.

    • @RealityCheckVR
      @RealityCheckVR  8 лет назад

      My purpose is to stop people making videos saying that you "CANT" stand up or walk around with the rift. I saw a lot this past week. This is the whole purpose. It's insane, all the bugs are currently getting worked out. The world seems ignorant to things like insurance and legality issues when it comes to a company and its VR device. The Vive simply ROCKS for what it is! The Oculus is great, but I wouldn't be happy if I didn't have the hydra and development hardware.
      Still tracker position will determine how well you are tracked and mine tracks mine throughout my room without fail unless I am 12+ feet away then it is certainly wobbly. With two trackers I get more room without wobble.

    • @TheJaRoDoNe
      @TheJaRoDoNe 8 лет назад +1

      I guess it all comes down to how one defines roomscale VR. Yes the rift is fine for standing and moving around, but only within a limited space (with 1 camera) and the limit is pretty much the cable length the rift has. The vive has longer cables and larger tracking space. But the real question should really be, does a tracking space of 7x7 meters for the vive (quick google of about max vive tracking space) vs the rift with 2.5x2.5m (guesstimate from max sensor tracking range with 2 trackers) really make such a difference? Probably not unless you have a huge room. Current generation of VR will pretty much be limited to standing and slight moving around. And moving forward with VR the only way to get past the limitation of infinite movement is to have a large enough room to fool the human mind to move in circles or to have vr treadmill or even complete human suspension/forcefeedback. Mythos of the world axis is a good example for the rift where you stand and move around in a limited space.
