    You caught as a subscriber with your perseverance & early morning rise to do this video. Sandfleas 101, 102 & 103. WHAT LESSONS TO BE LEARNED! Well done, Sir!
    Side note: You are going for a "saturated solution", therefore the additional salt won't make an ounce of difference in refrigerated concentration for preservation. However, it never occurred to apply this principle to avoid freezing. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WISDOM!!

    I don’t even live near the beach or fish….but I somehow found myself here and completely engrossed in how to preserve those sand fleas.

    the salt content on its own should be enough to preserve them without taking up freezer space. dry salting baits is great too because it pulls all of the moisture out and makes shrimp (for example) tougher which helps it stay on the hook better. as always nothing will ever be better than fresh, but runners up are nice for us who can't make it to the beach on a regular basis.

    This technique works for shrimp and finger mullet too. It is NOT the same as just salting your bait. It keeps them much fresher smelling than just salt. Another note is that the salt concentration is not improved by boiling the water. When the water cools the salt dissipates out of the water. Just add salt to cold tap water and then freeze. Not to mention that boiling salt over on the stove is not good for marriages.

    Awesome video!!! I'm always struggling with keeping fleas "fresh" for any length of time, so this simple method will really help me to retain usable bait after I've kept and used them alive for a few days. Thanks for the great videos!

    Canning and pickling salt I have been told specifically dissolves more easily than kosher. IDK if it's true, but I do know it's cheaper than kosher and supposed to be only pure salt. Thank you for the info, I will try it soon.

    I’ve “ dry salted “ shrimp for years to use surf fishing because they never go bad and stay on the hook far better than fresh , but I’ve never tried super saturation , gonna have to give it a whirl .

    is it possible to peel them and just eat the meat?

    • @cowmancheese
      @cowmancheese 2 года назад +1

      Alot of people have done that yes, peoples comments range from florida, mexico, hawaii, and the philipines from what ive seen. The procedure that makes the most sense is to either let them sit in water long enough to poop and empty their bowels, or just peel their main shell and their shovel on the stomach and clean the guts out after. Some people said they even rip the tips off the feet because its mostly shell. I havent tried it yet but i believe this would actually make them taste good, as most youtubers who do it fry them whole, so theyre eating the poop and guts. When you eat a shellfish and you get nasty guts its also disgusting, so why not these guys?
      Most people fry them after coating in batter or flour and just eat them whole after preparing them

    Is there any benefit to blanching them first?

    • @FishGum
      @FishGum  2 года назад +1

      I think you do either do one or the other. I have never blanched fleas before however those I know who do it to preserve fleas a long time. The mistake people make when blanching fleas is they don’t let the sand fleas completely dry before freezing them. This will make the sand flea stronger than if you pop them in the freezer right if they are still wet.
