We have been eating these things for years but we peel them and wash the insides out first. Fry them to a crisp. We season them with chilli powder and salt before pan frying them. They just melt in your mouth.
Sand fleas our favorite sea food here in the philippines. And the best way to cook it just saute it with butter & garlic & little bit of powdered pepper & salt & a squeeze of lemon & chili peppers. Very tasty...really yummy.
The smaller ones are better. You’re actually supposed to pull off the bottom ‘tab’ that pulls out their intestinal tract. The smaller ones fry up crunchy and the shells are tender and crispy.
also read that you want to soak em for a while to really get all the sand out. Like at least an hour and not just 20 minutes like they did in the video.
Try this: after rinsing, pour olive over to get the seasoning to stick. Season how you like it. Then bread in 50/50 flour and crushed cracker crumbs. Deep fry. An amazing appetizer
@@realspilltv4494 they do, from everything I’ve seen. They will actually attempt to burrow into your skin. If really starved, they can really scrape your skin up
Brant...dude...Kept thinking you were going to punk us at some point, but you guys actually ate them!!! Thought maybe you guys would show us a trick on how to pop their meat out like crawfish...nope just pop em in and chew. That kid's face was priceless, dude!
Did you remove the antena? Locals here told me it would be super safe if you removed it. Otherwise, you would get poisoned, mildly though, just a slight of headache.
That's a different kind of sand flea. These aren't even fleas, technically, they're mole crabs. real sand fleas will bite dogs and burrow into their skin, which can cause infections. Never had a problem with it in San Diego, we always gave our dog a bath after the beach though.
@@John-mf6ky+1 to this. Sand fleas are different, and WILL bite you. Mole crabs will not. I don’t eat them but we use em for bait to catch perch, corbina and croaker species.
Sand fleas are delicious. Plentiful on the south coast of Jamaica across from Canoe Valley and Alligator Pond. I learnt from you some time ago that they are good for fishing. Fishing has been great since then. Thanks loads.👍🏽💯
You should have cut one in half to show what exactly you're eating and how much meat is there. These Emerita are small genus of decapod crustaceans, known as mole crabs, sand crabs, sand bugs, or sand fleas. They burrow in the sand as the waves come in and use their antennae for filter feeding for plankton. They should taste like shrimp and crab. Thumbs up to Landon although he should have given it more of a chance before swallowing. People in other countries eat them regularly. Great job guys!
Hey brant here’s a good good quick recipe for fish Step 1:put burner on medium Step 2:Put 2 tbsp of butter in a pan (or enough to cover the bottom of pan) Step 3: put key lime seafood seasoning and old bay on both sides of fillets with a squirt of lemon and re apply seasoning lightly after flipping (amount is based on how thick the fillet is) Step 4: Cook till the fillet gets flaky It’s a quick simple and delicious way to cook fish especially if your trying to taste the flavor of what kind of fish you have enjoy!
We use our hands here in the Westcoast.. Just dip your hands in the sand as the wave recedes and you'll always get at least 1 or 2 anywhere along the beach. It's crazy.
When I was a lifeguard in Ft. Walton/Destin, I'd catch a lot of those monster Sand Fleas by hand, looking for their antennae. Then, I'd put them in a clear jar so the kids could see them. The adults reacted to them even more. They're so prehistoric looking.
I love how Landon second guesses his decision right after just tossing it down the hatch hahaha. Thanks for the video. Would you do a lion fish catch and cook? Love from MN!

I said this in another video of yours but worth saying again; if you can't afford a sand flea rake (seen them around $70 sometimes) or find them you can use pasta strainers. It's a bit tougher but it works. This also brings back good memories in college. I first saw Andrew Zimmern eat these in Thailand on Bizzare Foods but they called them Sea Cicadas. Being near Daytona, I would take some friends to catch fleas and they would have fun and were also surprised at how decent-good they were. We fried them up in breading.
omg another guest appearance by Yak Motley. I ate sandfleas back in the early 70's. I was very hungry. On the beach. Early morning...Mine were a little sandy.
I have used the sand flea rake to gather tons of that seashell aggregate "chum" that builds up along the edge of the shore to make some pretty awesome landscape projects around the house.
We didn't eat sandfleas as these were bait for surf fishing but we did make Coquina broth in the winter when they were plentiful. We caught them the same way as the surf receded and one of us would wade out a little way to get clean saltwater without sand for our big cook pot we would put on a fire or fish cooker to cook them up with onions, carrots and sometime new potatoes and pepper since the water was already salted (came from the Gulf). We would drink/eat this out on the beach while surf fishing. It was both nourishing, tasty and offered welcome warmth in cold weather. I don't know if Coquinas are still out there or if they have gone the way of scallops and other shellfish. Memories of fishing on Perdido Key particularly toward Ft. McRae.
Thumbs up too the young boy for taking it like a champ.. He tossed the whole thing in an said the hell wit taken his time ... Go big r go home.. That's what's really good.. 100. DA FAM...

@@CameramanRon Yes sir it is indeed a thing! Saw Bluegabe do it. So him being in Florida also I though it would not be to hard for yawl to catch them . An your reactions and facial expressions are priceless!!!!!
That beach does produce some stud sand fleas! Just be careful with the rake and the waves. I wear many sand flea rake scars. I tried to rake today, but a stud 14” to fork pomp disrupted me.
Found one inside an oyster shell that I got from the grocery store. Had no idea what it was at the time. I dont know if it was trying to eat the oyster or the oyster was trying to eat it when they got scooped up.
Sand fleas are delicious but you have to take the shell off. Break the shell at the joint behind the head and peel it off with all the guts, rinse and deep fry. Try it next time
