Thank You! A wonderful tutorial, you answered all the questions I had ; time of day, what to look for in shore line, maintaining them. You, Sir have my gratitude as one fisherman to another and wish you a long life of sharing, which we will all benefit from. Thanks, Kerry
I am an old once upon a time creek man. I used to dig clams, tong oysters, pull crab pots,etc... one tip I have seen for preserving bait is to boil water, add kosher salt, maybe a cup to a quart, let it cool ,then add another cup. If there are crystals in the pot, you are there. The water is totally saturated with salt. Pour this brine over your bait of choice and store in the freezer. It won't freeze and it won't spoil.
You can saturate your water with salt without boiling. The amount of salt that water will dissolve is based on the temperature of the water. So when the water cools the extra salt crystallizes back out of the water. Put a cup or more of pool salt per quart of water in a container with a lid. I shake it until no more salt dissolves then pour the water into your storage container. The water is saturated at room temperature. When you place it in the freezer some salt will crystallize on the bottom then you know it is saturated.
When I was maybe 10 years old a man at Carolina Beach showed me how to catch sand fleas by hand and remember using them to great success, but that was 40 or more years ago and I can't remember how I rigged them up. Do you have any vids on deploying the fleas? Great vid.
Hey sir I livid in Fayetteville Nc I'm a fireman at City of Fayetteville found and subscribed to OD5 a month ago love watching your videos especially because when I do get to go to the coast to fish 6 or 7 times a year I fish same beaches!!!!
Great video on finding fleas. I keep mine in a small styrofoam cooler. I place a frozen smart water bottle on one side of the cooler, then bury it with beach sand and fleas. I trade out bottles 1 or twice a day and the fleas have lasted over a week with this technique. Every couple of days I'll sift through the sand and pull out the dead ones, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
I agree with Dick Downs, best video I've seen. Much better then my technique. I stand at the waters edge and try to follow as they barrow down as the wave washes back. I will use this tip from now on.
They this is great.. never knew how to read the beach for sand fleas. We call them "sea roach" where am from. But what we do is get the inside of a fish, put it on a stick. and plant it in the same area where you rake and they all run to the stick. We wait for enough to come to the stick then we take up the entire stick with all the fleas around it.
low tide is easier, look for area deep hole (close to a foot) with soft sand, you can use anything bucket or strainer with a lot of holes ,dig into the sand try to scoop deep to get a lot o sand then rinse it, that is.
Tghere is a day limit on extraction, don't be cought with more...you loose money, fisjhing equipment and license. Check with your local authorities first. Good luck. (Good catch)
Ok so last week every scoop got me bait yesterday not a one. We had been in a cold stretch and there was a front moving in. Any ideas why the beach was empty on sand fleas?
I wish I had an answer for that question. They appear to be as finicky as the fish. One day they are there and plentiful and the next day they are nowhere to be found. We fishermen are definitely the ever optimist. Thanks for stopping by
The walk is different every time. Sometimes you go out there and you see them right away sometimes you walk for what seems like a mile and you might not find any so no two trips are the same. Thanks for stopping by.
For me low tide is the key not so much whether it’s day or night however it’s easier to see them and the impression that they making the sand during the day.
Man , thanks a lot , you answered my question about how to keep them for a few days Thank you , I have one more question , is there a specific time to catch them or all day long ?

Awesome video man. I don’t live too far from you so I’m looking forward to getting some sand fleas myself
My uncle always laid a damp sponge on top of the sand while storing fleas. I think it provided a little evaporative cooling?
Thanks good info

You’ll get more sand flea if you dig just as the water is going back out and the fleas are near the surface feeding.

Thanks Kevin!
Hey nice video! Are you able to catch sand flea in the winter or around now?
I think it depends on where you are but I can’t say for sure as I’ve only targeted them in NC.
When is the best time to catch #sand flees night R morning
For me low tide is the key not so much whether it’s day or night however it’s easier to see them and the impression that they making the sand during the day.
What do you keep the fleas in while your fishing?
In a Styrofoam cooler with dry sand.
My brother drag the net as the water is all the way in and it’s going back out u will
Catch much more
Noted. Thanks for the tip.
Can I catch 🦐 shrimp standing on the shoreline
I haven’t at the beach. Usually rivers or inlets for me.
@@OnDayFiveFishing ok
Thx 🤗 u
It's not easy catching those Sand flees
I’ve read that using a black light at night helps you to spot them - anyone try this?
Man , thanks a lot , you answered my question about how to keep them for a few days
Thank you ,
I have one more question , is there a specific time to catch them or all day long ?
Sorry for delay. My best experience hasn’t been low tide where the tide has a good ebb and flow.
I can't catch them I am in Florida broward county area
When the next time you fishing an where
Heads up Walmart has that scooper for 17
That’s a great price!!
You are looking the wrong way. You should be looking toward the sun, which makes spotting them easier. IMHO.
Good tip. I’ll take it.
They are sand crabs
