To answer one question you asked during this video , yes Smart indeed played football as a kid . You might have already guessed that he was a cornerback
Marcus Smart is a better defender than Patrick Beverley imo
@@forgottenson3411 no shit
@@forgottenson3411 thats not even a dbate😂
He a dopty now
How about Jamal Adams style safety?
As a person who plays a lot of pick up basketball, I think the biggest thing on defense is you have to be quick on your feet. You gotta be able to get in a stance and be able to quickly flip the hips.
Recovery speed as well
Yesssir
Angles are important and forcing the player to their weak hand.
Somethings you just cant teach, and thats just the pure instinct that he plays with
I feel like it can be taught and needs years and years, if didnt already say, years of work and playing
1. Footwork adaptability
2. Find comfortable, athletic, quick stance.
3. Keep your eyes active.
4. SMART hustle. Calculated risk. No stupid hustle.
5. Recovery fast sprints
6. Block shoter's vision
7.Don't jump too early on pump ffakes. Be patient.
8. Active arms
9. Take charges.
take charges... king of flop. lol

what a Smart defensive player...
What is your comment?
@@aahil4749 it's a pun
Think smart not hard
It's a treat fo watch this guy play defense. It's more entertaining vs watching big center playing defense because Smart has more skills to make up for the size
those defensive strips are impressive
it's hard to be a good defender in the NBA because there's no reward for it.
Players are more than likely to get penalized
Pretty sure Dmart would like to argue that there is no reward for being a great defender in the NBA lol he's made a pretty nice living doing so with earnings if 66 million to date and total 143 million after his current contract is finished.
There’s all defensive teams and DPOY’s
@@connorcross7205 but it’s not close to being good on offense most great defensive players don’t even get to be all stars
After watching this video about 3 or 4 times, 2 back to back, I realized that Marcus is a very well disciplined player in general. Especially on defensive! Thank you for this video. I appreciate it.
Hustle not risky for himself but for the other team's players. Diving on people's knees and feet kinda risky(for me). Still though, he's a monster on the defensive side
Great video! Showing off what Smart is capable of
Hey just wanted to say thank you for this video i have gone from being a big man how wouldnt dare try come out of the paint on defence to being able to lookdown any gaurd without even running. This video has helped me so much and truly i thank you.
Love how he takes a small hop back on his perimeter defense and kind of bait the offensive player to shoot knowing he can easily and quickly close that distance to contest the shot and also puts him in a better position to defend a drive if the player ends up pump faking. Damn he good 🔥
I've been a Marcus Smart fan since he was in college 💪🏾
I have a big game tmrw and im adding this to the game plan I appreciate u dawg!
yay suuuper underrated player. love the analysis cheers
I’m the only lockdown defender on my team and this helps a lot, the stuff with steals especially I don’t often get steals I just guard the biggest guy on the court or fastest
Same but If it’s the biggest guy I just face guard him
@@camaribonds5209 yea this is really useful on inbounds becasue i completly stop them from getting the ball, the only times i really get scored on is when they got a good post postion and i cant take a charge
@@gaintbulb4629 only Time they rlly score on me is if I foul them
@@camaribonds5209 i’m 14 and like 5’6 so guarding centers is a lot of trouble for me
@@gaintbulb4629 I’m 5,9 160 I can guard some post if u from em it’ll be easier
Amazing video 👏🏽
The beat tho... 🔥🔥
Please due a video on Darius Garland on his passing his handles how he gets his shoots off he’s is really shifty and smooth , love your vid / content I really appreciate it
Defensive Player of the Year
YESSS! BEING ABLE TO FLOP EFFECTIVELY IS A SKILL. THIS SPORT NEEDS A MIND GAME. U SHOULD KNOW HOW TO SELL THOSE CHARGES EVEN THOUGH IT'S A FLOP.
Gonna miss him in Boston 💚
Awesome video, I'm gonna work on some of these defensive qualities the next time I hoop. I notcice he does split steps when defending shots, like tennis. Some of his defensive footwork reminds me of Frankie Edgar's boxing footwork too.
He played tennis a lot, he could have played in college
Great video. I think his footwork is the thing that players should study - there's a lot of stuff he does that simply isnt possible without being on his base, and he's basically never off-balance. He's a premier athlete, for sure, but what he does with his hips and his ankles, over the course of any defensive stretch, is unlike anyone in the league. And I think there's a lot to be said for the psychological impact of having to go against a guy who you know is coming for the ball, is very good at getting to it, and who will beat you to the floor if something goes wrong.
If Smart passed two of every five 3's he took, he'd be All-NBA every single year. His shot selection is the only real flaw in his game.
Thanks
can you do an attention to detail on herb jones out in new orleans ??? rookie and already one of the best defenders in the league
NFL and NBA heck yes!! Like how NBA is so high paying also
As a celtics fan I base my defense on Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart. I only have trouble with quick small guards.
I'm the biggest fan of Smart's defense.
I love that all organizations don’t listen to the media which don’t know what they was talking about when they were saying they should trade Marcus

A great defender lies in the mentality
Never be afraid to get dirty
True he’s always getting hit in the face on defense, never afraid to put his body on the line
smart is a good defender and smart player
i think one problem i have is i keep going for blocks and i don’t rly try to strip the ball on the way up
He's so smart.
thanks for actually giving tips instead of these other videos where they be like to be a great defender you have to have heart, you have to have hustle lol
What’s this instrumental called?
Hey man.. I’m not gonna lie, nice video but what’s the beat tho? That’s 🔥 … I need that !!
yo out of topic but what’s that beat in the back?!!!!!
you think you can buy a intercept ? keep focus
Welcome to the Marcus Smart 7-step course on How To Defend.
Step 1: Flop.
Steps 2-7: Flop again until you get the call.
Congratulations!
You have completed the Marcus Smart course on How To Defend.
Thats step 8 flopping. You just mad he a good defender
@@fishifyjenkins1379 Hes not mad. He is a relentless flopper. Keep tryna shut your eyes to it tho lmao.
@@fishifyjenkins1379 Marcus Smart got a taste of his own medicine from Jordan Poole for flopping too much.
Marcus Smart - Defensive Flopper of The Year(DFOY)
Smart is a big time flopper. It's part of his game. He is not trash on D BUT he is no true DPOY imo.
marcus smart highlight is pure steal and for me in steal alvarado is the best
can u make a vid about moves to blow by ur defender
For real
I think he already has
They had a series about the types of dribblers years ago, I think they discussed ways to blow by a defender in it
@@notnigelll i thought he only made vids about moves to get seperation
@@ilikekoolaid-1341 nah he makes diverse content
Marcus smart is the reason why I become a Lockdown Defender 🔒
Giannis called him the toughest defender he's had to face
Smart player.
Smart is so smart 🤓
I like he's defense play unless he flop too much.
He is really good defensive player but Ion know I look at his defensive game ans I see that he got a little hacking in there where as Jrue in my opinion is a type of defender where he only takes action in defense through the opponent’s mistake not alot of physicality “hacking” involved not as Marcus anyways . Ps I was watching a Jrue video thats why I made that comparison
DPOY
Helll yaaa
I'm actually more of a defensive player fan vs offensive.
Do julius randle attention to detail
💪🏿
DPOTY!!!!

Whenever I do number 5 I get called for a block
Who else’s defense do you want to see broken down?
Bill Russell
Have you done a breakdown for Alex Caruso?
Lonzo and Klay
Kyrie Irving , Marcus smart (just guards/perimeter) , tony Allen ,
Also want how to guard/defend lateral glide dribble & all the counters out of it
I’m really curious to see how the Celtics do in the playoffs cause they have some really aces on defense
They don't really have much weaknesses or weak links defensively imo their guys 1-8 are all pretty good defenders in Smart, Brown, Tatum, Horford and Rob Williams as a starting 5 then White, Grant Williams and Theis off the bench even Pritchard although undersized height he's becoming more and more a dawg like Smart defensively. He will never have Smarts length and Size but you can't knock the effort and hustle he plays with always fighting and diving for loose balls, hustling on any rebounds getting tips and extra hustle will afford him a long career as a back up PG in the NBA and dam can he shoot lol my point tho is that the Celtics defense is pretty special and rare definitely in today's nba. Personally it's something amazing to watch and there hasn't been a defense team so solid all around this since the 04 Pistons and honestly I think they might even be better then the 04 Pistons. Of course Big Ben Wallace is in a class of his own and no one on the Celtics can match him defensively but Smart is by far a better defender then Billups imo which is saying something as Billups was a great defender but Rip Hamilton wasn't a good defender where as Jaylen Brown is pretty good defender, Tayshuan Orince made a living as a defender in the NBA and although never put up major stats in steals and blocks he made his presence known on the defensive end and Tatum might be known for his ability on the other side of the ball but this year his effort defensively has raised tenfold. Not just that though he is a very underrated defender with the ability to defend 1 thru 5 as I've seen him go one on one with Trae Young and one on one with Karl Anthony Towns getting the better of both them defensively! Horford is OK retty equal to Rasheed imo Rasheed may have been more physical and more dawg in him but Horford by far has more versatility defensively the Sheed then Timelird Rob Williams like I said no-one can do what Big Ben was able to do but Rob definitely is definitely a top 5 to top 3 defender in the NBA today with this being his first year as starting player and having significant playing times and role. Rob Williams with out a doubt has so much potential that's untapped still! Just saying is that Boston might not have a guy like ben wallacr however the Celtics dont have the weaker lsink and in has had improvements all around with mor e depth then that 94 Pistons tea
@@pplRretards Yea unfortunately when I posted the original comment it was right before Robert Williams got injured, so I do have some concerns about whether they can keep the season alive until he gets back. Having said that, if they can stay alive till he gets back, the sky is the limit for them. They are a legit title contender at full strength
finals bound

Do a breakdown on FACUNDO CAMPAZZO's court vision, passing prowess and defense.
He is UNDERRATED by Americans.

oh hi marc
Still Denis Rodman the best how to make forward angry
DPoy,but no in finals😁
Not DPOY you silly goose. It's DFOY(Defensive Flopper of the Year) 😁
How to flop
I think a key factor of how he got the dog mentality to play defense was growing up in Texas
And his brother's unfortunate passing
Dfw!
Didn’t do shit against Poole
She is soooo fine.
flop?
…or just flop
Brain rot
You have to flop a lot
This aged well.
??
Don't practice and make it a goal to take charges! That's some bitch shit and a good way to get people hurt! I hope they find a way to get that out of the game some day!
💀you probably the same kind of person that cries it is no defense today. If you take a charge you literally have to let the other person run right into you and it's a risk of getting dunked on
