Got the chance to spend some time with Marcus a few weeks ago. We talked a lot about defense. He studies every player in the league and knows what they like to do and where they like to get their shots. He often knows what theyʻre going to do before they do it. A true student of the game. Amazing.

Ah, the Evade Steal. Definitely one of the most unique and difficult techniques to teach/explain. In the advanced section of the Lockdown Book for sure
Whats also great about Smart is how he keep the ball inbounds even pass it to a teammate after a defensive play. He can pass it while standing, mid air, while on the way falling on to the floor or eveb literally laying on the floor. He's just crazy.
Great content! I'd be very keen to see an analysis of Marc Gasol's defense. He's way past his prime, has never been an athletic freak (apart from just being big) , not really quick on his feet, but is one of the best defenders in the league when it comes to slowing down the best centers (Embiid and even Jokic to some extent).
Finally I’ve been waiting on a Marcus smart vid for the longest. Only one missing now is Dennis Rodman. If u do him analyze his piston days when he was younger and guarding Jordan and Magic more.
I remember watching that game where Smart drew 2 fouls from Harden right in a row. these were 2 plays in a row right at the end of the game, he basically won the game with 2 defensive plays.

When I played defense on a guy in the post 'larger size guy but only 5'10" I'd kinda let the offensive guy post me up bully me for a split second, the guard would deliver a post pass then I'd kinda spin around an him (between his weight and my weight it was a pretty fast spin) and either intercept the pass or knock it out of bounds and kinda make the offense hesitant to toss the entry pass. A bit of a risky proposition but reading the guards eyes and shoulder movement along with his hips I was ok at knowing when the pass was coming.

They got shopped by 60, coach was saying on the sidelines “Anyone gonna play defense?!” In a defeated tone. I’m gonna transfer anyway, so when I go up to varsity it’s on a better team where they respect me as a player and not have huge egos.
Smart turns the offencer into a defender. Normally the offensive player has the advantage given they know where they want to go and defender has to react. Smart squares up and takes a position, forces them to REACT, and then clips their off hand and shoulder, making it hard for them to change direction and switch hands. Should they try to change direction, he'd reach for the ball cause hes expecting it.
Always been a fan of marcus smart but I feel like this year especially he's dropped the ball. Like some plays he's 200 IQ but others he's too aggressive and fouls them or occasionally has his engine stalling
I know exactly what your talking about. I think it’s because his role has changed. Brad kinda let players lose their roles and as a result u had smart acting as a shooting guard that thinks he’s steph instead of the hard nose defensive smart.
It is when the defender recovers or guards the opponents dribbling shoulder. So instead of being square to their waist, you're centered to their dribbling shoulder - forcing them to change direction. So instead of trying to recover to a driver, you want to over run them slightly

Many factors: Injuries, overall team structures and chemistry affected his defensive prowess.
