Hi mate, love your work. Just a tip: a 'predecessor' is an earlier model, a 'successor' is a later model. So the GH4 is the predecessor to the GH5, the GH6 is the successor to the GH5.
Beyond that, as someone who only owns a Gh5 II and a G85, I think my next camera upgrade will be to the G9 II. Autofocus is the worst part of my cameras, and even saying 'shoot manual' isn't so easy when all the lenses are focus by wire. Pulling focus isn't as easy as it should be, especially for a system with bad autofocus. That's just my two cents anyway.

you know Caleb, I got a gh6, after gh5 since 2018, and the AF on the 6, frankly, is NOT all that bad. for one thing, I have not encountered pulsing on 6. It puts boxes around people, or faces and damn if it's not accurate, and sticky focus. Your observation the 6 is more "cinematic image" than the 5-s and G92, rings true. One more thing I've grown to LIKE about my 6. Hold on to your seats. STILLS. hey I shoot stills on bigger sensor cams usually. BUT, not just using the 100mp mode, but regular 25mp photos ??? I am sometimes blown away, by the color, dynamic range (without boost), and with decent glass this camera's ability to do quality stills. Some may argue, but to those I say, try the gh6. NO overheating with the 6, as you say a more pleasing image than the others , probably the best color of any Lumix camera out of the box....OK the sucker is heavy compared to my 5, and the stab, while very good, ain't an OM system. BUT, all things considered, and the STEAL price i got a new 6 for half retail price during a BH promotion), I gotta say I too love the 6, so far. Good light, the AF is sticky. No big deal. If fast moving or such, you can always go to manual focus. But tell me Caleb. HOW COME THE GH6 GETS NO LOVE ???? It's a masterpiece for video, approved by NETFLIX. No it ain't perfect. Neither is Sony Canon or Nikon or Fuji. each camera has quirks.there is no Perfect camera. But the 6 is way up there IMO. Would I have liked PDAF in the 6? sure. but all things considered, it's a f.......k of a good camera. nuff said

I really enjoy the GH6 as a work horse camera. I also have the GH5 and use them for multi cam interviews. I can tell the GH5 is more clinically sharper and I got used to likening that. Now I find myself trying to soften up the sharpening in it to match the GH6. I’m satisfied with the GH6 autofocus as a user without the G9ii. But I also enjoy the manual focus workflow knowing I got the shot I wanted. I also like the heft of GH6 for work. It feels reliable. Kind of interested to learn more about why you think the image is more cinematic out of camera on GH6 over the other S bodies and G9ii - I’m assuming you’re using VLOG on both GH6, S5ii and G9II (on S5ii and G9II i believe the new processing engine uses a slightly more aggressive sharpening algorithm on non VLOG profiles). The only other difference that I’m aware of is that GH6 uses an OLPF ? Is this very slight softening of the image easy to replicate with something like dehancer? I shoot S1, S1R, S5ii and interested in G9ii (I avoided the GH6 because I’m a one man band and need AF on a gimbal. I do however always have a soft spot for the GH6 image and color science. I’ve played with dehancer and shooting with a buddy using GH6 have been very happy to match S5iix footage with GH6. Interested to get your take. Great channel. Keep up the great work!

    • @aiseurnae5976
      @aiseurnae5976 9 месяцев назад +2

The GH6 and the G9II have the same details rendering in video, they don't use OLPF but they use a sort of digital OLPF called Intelligent Details Filtering. This one is pretty aggressive on these two cameras. It helps to prevent moiré and makes the image more cinematic by softening some very fine details like complex patterns, hairs or skin.
This is sometimes annoying, by exemple when using soft lenses or super telephoto zoom lenses like the 100-400mm at the long end because some fine details like feathers on birds can look blurry especially when the birds are moving a bit, both the GH6 and G9II can have difficulty to stay 100% sharp, exactly like if the shutter speed was too low. Never had these issue on my GH5, G9 or S5 or S1.
The GH5 and the G9 don't smooth fine details in video, so they can look sharper and more digital, they look much more like a burst of raw photos. I sometimes like this look as well, this is not bad like on smartphones at all.
But in my opinion, the GH6 looks more cinematic than the G9II because of the color science, the best I have seen from a Panasonic camera.

My lineup is the GH5 (Camera 3) GH6 (B-ROLL Camera 2) and S5II (Camera 1) My only question is, I prefer shooting in 10-bit 420, and the only 10bit option on the GH5 is shooting in 422. Thats kinda one of the reasons I want a G9II for the autofocus and to match up with my GH6 and S5II... is this too marginal of a nitpick to want a g9II to replace my GH5? Thanks Caleb! Even as an owner of the G9 II (more precisely: G9M2) I must say that there are distinct differences between the lineups. There is a reason why Pany has positioned the new camera as photo-centric model: by default it supports 4K / C4k. Want open gate? Well, then either add a SSD + a DC coupler + an AC adapter + electricity (coming from where?) or use the all new firmware 2.00, which requires … an external recorder. I do not have a problem with these restrictions since downsampling from 5.8K is fantastic (quite similar to Canon’s R6 MK II) but if I wanted to do anamorphic on as hi-res a frame as possible (in order to achieve great results in post), I would have to use the BMD VideoAssist. This said, the camera is super snappy but all the options make it a bit difficult to use (compared to the G9). The manual consists of 800+ pages… Switchting back and forth SSD and SD is a bit annoying. From a specification and high-quality output perspective it is splendid.

    Like:
Panasonic Gh6 = panasonic gh5 version 1 (Cheap, excelent boby and great video quality)
Panasonic G9 Mark2 = A mixing of the Lumix G9 and the Lumix GH5 Mark2, in one body (All in one)
    A Posible Version
Panasonic Gh6-S = Like the Lumix Gh5-S just focus on Low Light Video and Powerful Video DR, like 14+stop Dynamic Range and Dual Native ISO 400/4000 (like S5II-X). Or just Like the dual ISO of the Gh5-S 400/2500.

I have now 3 M43 cameras, the GH5, GH6 and G9II. I really like the image of the GH6, the AF of the G9II and sometimes the very sharp image of the GH5 for some shots, lot more moiré than the GH6 and G9II but the fine details are not altered at all in 4K.

The GH6 has a V-Log base ISO (0db) set at 2000 ISO which is great for lower light situations. The G9-II has a much lower base ISO in video. That's a G9-II deal breaker for me. I'm holding my GH6 for that very reason. (waiting for the GH7)

To me the G9II seems like the perfect all in One Run and Gun and Travel Cam (as my G9 before)
would love (like) to see a S5iiR (36+ mp) as a companion to the G9ii - 2 awesome hybrids
The GH6's final destination seems to be a safety/Backup Cam ("I know, we got SOMETHING...")
Don't know what to do with my S5 OG though 🤔
but for b2b and the usual corporate Video work stuff i don't wont a hybrid. what i really want to see is a FF EVA II with PDAF and a good EVF+Screen (!)
and maybe new box cameras for multicam (it's Blackmagic for now)
never enjoyed Sony-Cameras... that's why i prefer using the OLD JVC LS300 over the FX6 (call me an idiot :)
So my wish for 2024 is a (few) Sony FX killer

I love the GH6. The auto focus is fine. The body, that GH6 body is unmatched. It would be hard for me to leave this camera. If I didn’t already have a GH6 then, that G9II would definitely be an option.

I can see why GH5 users/lovers weren't crazy about the GH6. It really is almost a different line of camera, the design path clearly took a turn with the GH6. But how? They went much harder core CINEMA cam. Which is what a lot of folks wanted, or claimed they wanted, no? Maybe Lumix should have kept the GH6 more like the 5 and the 9mk2, and made the the GH6 that we know into a "Cinema" line, like what Canon did? Then there would be zero to complain about, right? Cine cams don't generally relay on AF as much, just look at the BMPC line. Cine cams aren't run and gun, which really, the GH6 isn't either. Money no object I would have picked up a Canon C70. But in many ways the GH6 feels like a mini C70, so I'm happy. I got what I asked for. (But of course yes, if there was a firmware way to upgrade the AF in the GH6 I would not complain! lol) Thanks for the video!

I don't find these G9M2 vs GH6 conversations meaningful. Obviously the GH6 is a 2021 release (delayed into spring 2022) which will be replaced by a GH7 with PDAF by Panasonic ASAP. At this point the GH6 is over two years old, while the G9M2 is fresh out of the assembly line. If no GH7 announcement at CES in january or shortly thereafter, at least in the next 6-12 months.

      So true !!
If they had put the DR BOOST at ISO 500 and the same AF than the G9II inside the GH6 body, the camera would have been perfect because the GH6 image is better than the G9II, mainly because colors.
This is the same with the S5II, if they had put the same AF and IBIS than the S5II inside the first S5, the camera would have been perfect because the internal video processing is better on the first S5.
This is really what I expected when I bought the G9II and the S5II, a GH6 and a S5 with better AF. But I was pretty disappointed and I kept my S5 and my GH6 along with the S5II and G9II.
Next time, I will wait before buying the new Panasonic cameras to see if they have both the best image quality and the best AF they can provide.

But yup we are all waiting for GH6ii/GH7 to bring all the good stuff together. Including a softer more cinematic image setting.
