I got Xpulse 200 which is phenomenal. I am from Assam where 60% roads are hilly and off roads.. and last week I went to Karbi Anglong. Place known for off road and landscapes. Trust me.. with standing I went around 50-60 kmph on that pebbly road where if I had ridden sitting then my organs would’ve reorganised and when I was returning to my home on highway there was no sounds or machine sound after off-roading. Trust me this Xpulse has took me to such places across northeast that many machines couldn’t. Ultimately... I love Xpulse as tourer as well as Off-roading. In such price (for me) it’s a great deal. Brought a Xpulse 200 this year in January.
After 10700 kms on the road getting used to the height, today (December same year, about 11 months) I modified the seat to be more broad, foamy and about 2 inches taller. I can still ride this increased seat height just fine. And I'm 5'7" tall.

I did the same with my Xpulse, and same height.

In a country where there isn't much difference in On Road & Off Road riding, ADV's make whole lot of sense.

XD I was looking for this comment. Just came back from my first long trip on an ADV. I concur. Crazy comfrot, power and still being bale to handle potholes and terrible speed breakers.

I have considered buying a Himalayan to avoid the roads in Mumbai and shumi well said that we need to consider having an ADV. Until we have better roads in India
I own a himalayan and to be honest from the day i got it....i started caring less about the condition of the roads 😂

I really don’t know whom to approach but I love the job shumi does as a test rider. It has always been my dream job and still I am not aware what I need to do for becoming a test rider so that I can close to the machines I love

Been using KTM Adv390 for a year now, really helps in passing through traffic, and saddling through those sudden potholes amd small jittery speedbumps also helps!
What about the mileage 😅?
Shumi is talking about motorcycles where Mileage is a parameter further down the list of consideration. If mileage is important then a commuter bike is whats required.
Agreed to most part and thank you putting this podcast. Each bike has its pros and cons.
Cons of adv are
The weight and height using in traffic tough. When on the move none of them matter, but when the going gets tough it becomes a big issue. Imagine rains, heavy traffic and not enough to put your foot down.
Tyres - if not used off-road then not so much but adv tyres have less grip on road due to its pattern and shape. It’s is compromise one needs to be aware about.
Maintenance- adv require more maintenance than regular tourer or sport bike. One can just live it but in general rider spend more time and money.
P.s. I own Tenere 700 and have owned AT. Love them and prefer over tourer and sports bike.

When you consider our country like ours.... Advs are the best suited mode of transport especially for the offroads that our roads have and the rivers that flow in the roads during the monsoon... They have long travel suspension fairly up mounted exhaust and comfortable for Indian roads.

I’m 44 and been having this feeling lately that an ADV is something I need to go for, even if for regular commuting as it’s very comfortable for the rider and pillion, for the kind of roads we have, but had my self doubts, this podcast couldn’t have been better timed, thanks Shumi and Powerdrift

This man is a legend in the Indian motorcycling journalism . Can listen to his podcasts day long , not only is he is a great presenter n reviewer but the way he objectively dissects a topic and gets so deep into explaining the “why” , makes him the best one here in India, he definitely is the Sadhguru when it comes to giving motorcycling gyaan , another excellent video Schumi and powerdrift team, kudos. ☺️
Wow this video has changed so many perceptions i had like i felt ADVs were over kill, not for our country and shortness affecting riding. I am myself 5.2ft riding FZS v3, in normal situations, the most i can get is either of the foot on ground (mostly right foot), its ok while riding but in traffic and taking it back i struggle.
Powerdrift has always been a channel which shows Motorcycles/Cars with most beautiful cinematic presentations along with their Reviews on them. I mean that's what I personally loved this channel for. But after arrival of Shumi it has become a "Channel of Gyan" for motorcycle riders. I love the way how beautifully he shares his knowledge/experiences of motorcycles with us. This man makes sure we never stop Loving and Riding motorcycles. A big hug! 🤗❤️

Added an ADV to my garage along side a supersport. First time I toured on it and I was covering distances blazingly fast even though performance is similar. The reason being lesser and shorter breaks, less slowing down on bad roads and more comfy riding position.
*long travel suspension - utility ergonomics - powerful engine - big wheels - and ability to go from Leh to Goa - enough to water any biker* ❤️⛄

This is something that I've been explaining to people time and again... ADVs don't automatically mean a unreasonably tall and slow motorcycle..
ADVs have their own flavour. And you'll get to know how good it is, when you taste it yourself... I enjoy riding my GS... But my dad always regarded it as outrageously tall with uncomfortably wide handlebars... One short test ride later... His views changed drastically... You simply cannot ignore the comfort that you can get with a good set of suspensions and a better riding stance.. thanks shumi for taking this up..

14:08 Tall narrow ADV with great torque, currently only Himalayan & Xpulse comes to mind.
Nice podcast. Although there is a paradox to this as well - ADVs are about but motorcycling in general is anything but about comfort.
Where did you get that notion? 21 years+ and literally lakhs and lakhs of kilometres and I don’t see a more comfortable mode of transport!

Would love to see a podcast on wind blast and wind protection in India. A lot of us travel on our street naked motorcycles. For example, I myself use my 390 Duke for touring. But there aren't really a lot of accessories made for this motorcycle to tackle the wind blast. Do we really even need wind screens on the smaller motorcycles like the 390 Duke itself?

I am 5'11" and I find Xpulse to be very comfy after modding with RE Himalayan seats omg its a perfectly balanced machine..
How did you do that..??. i was searching for such a solution
@@vishnukaruvath6121 its my friends you have to ask the seat maker to make seat like that he will modify seat like Himalayan where pillion seat will be more cushoined and will be at a little height where yours will be a little below..both look like Himalayan...

But my point is, in a country like India where most of us are monogamous, how well does an adv fit in the only space for motorcycle in my garage?
Brilliantly I would say!
I beem using Vstrom for last 2.5 years for commute to Long distance Touring to slight offroading.. In India where normal roads are also so bad and unpredictable, nothing else could beat my bike in comfort performance satisfaction.(or any similar adv bike)

To me, the adventure is inbuilt in Indian roads.... surprises galore! There can't be any other choice for me than an ADV. There can't be! It's much safer to be riding on ADV any day in India than on any other types! Also waiting for Yezdi ADV.

Was in market for a new motorcycle few months back. I was fixated on buying a sports but after testing all the types of motorcycles available, I was most impressed by advs and got myself an adv instead of sports!
Was sceptical before buying the Xpulse this year February......but now after 10k kms on it, I m in love with it. ❤️❤️❤️ For solo rides, it's a perfect bike. For double rides, it's a pain in A for the pillion 😁😁😁

Best would be getting the pillion their own XPulse, 2's better than 1, right? 😅🤣

the biggest reason to get an adv tourer are "Indian roads". i used to tour in gixxer 250 but the bad patches of road really concerned me about the bending of wheel and damage to suspension.. these issue are less prone to occur in adv bikes.

Loved your story Shumi. can relate to everything you say. Though not a straight comaprison, I cycle a lot and always felt safe on a MTB over a city bike simply because of the surprises a road can throw at you.

At the age of 56 I booked the Himalayan in 2016 with the plan of riding in the Himalayas again. 25 years after my first ride in 1991 in RD350 along with 4 other friends. I along with another friend who was in 1991 trip got in the first lot. In fact there 8 of us in the trip to Ladak in 2016 and 6 of us had bought our Himalayans in March 2016. Don't even remember if I test rode it or not. From that point we have become firm believers in the ADV segment. I went on to buy a used Tiger 800XC and used it for three years and in Jan 2021 I sold it and got a GS1250. There has been no looking back...And I am 5'8"
Perfect topic for discussion. Logical arguments. ADVs are taking the market by storm, and more people need to understand that it is not only if you are going to be offroading. Advs are brilliant for touring, thanks to the suspensions and upright seating position. Hopefully, more and more manufacturers make adv more affordable... Hopefully, we should see a 150cc adv for indian market to accept the adv bike.

Let me make it clear for international viewers, what is off-roading for you is daily commuting turmac road for us. So yeah we technically offroad everyday.

17s means you have a road bike. Which means normal handling and fantastic cornering. But it also has longer suspension and ground clearance, which means bad roads are easy! For people like me, who’ll take something small and light off-roading if at all, a large 17” wheeled adv is perfection!

I have always been more of a street naked bikes.. then I got Adv 390... BTW, i have seen your 390 Duke and 390 Adv review with Karthik.. disagree on some points..as I sold my 1st gen Duke 390 after 6 odd years with decent miles on it - City n Touring both but Adv 390 makes touring much more comfortable.. have done 500-600 km days on it..you are less tired EoD..
Do Advs totally makes sense.. and this is when I haven't ridden much the large capacity Advs.. I am sure they wud be more comfortable.. thanks Shumi..

ADV's rock. But street motorcycles are good too. I feel ADV's are tall. Putting a leg over the saddle is sometimes difficult.

Excellent insight. My garage is in dire need of one, Having a CBR 250r and a 2016 Duke 390 Old gen. Maybe an Xpluse or the Upcoming Himalayan 450 will do it for me

Please talk about how underrated sportbike touring has become in the whole adv glam. It saves you from the windblast. It’s smaller & more manageable. Looks sexy af. Even better with luggage on it. Doesn’t feel squishy because of long travel suspension, etc etc. 😋
Long travel suspension feels squishy? Maybe it just needs a service! But yes sportsbike touring is properly sexy if you can handle it
I don't see any appeal to it. Adv tourers felt better to handle for me on road. Personal perspective.
Advs are SUV of 2-wheelers !!
now suv can be hardcore or soft but it will be more comfortable than sports car & will be faster than most of commuter hatchbacks on highways
