actually the song (just as at least the majority of the album, if not whole) is inspired by George Orwell's "1984", hence the mention of "thought police" which appears in the book

Nice reaction! As @lunajka mentioned, the “thought police” is a dead giveaway that they had 1984 in mind. One of the plot lines in that novel involves the main character’s affair with a co-worker which must be kept secret because romantic love is forbidden by the government. That may shed a lot of light on the themes of this song for you. The whole album has definite Orwellian inspirations.

all of Muse music to me is the human condition laid bare and raw

The best bands come in threes: Muse, Rush, the Police, etc. They have to be accomplished musically, often experimentally and sonically.

7:05 thats a guitar with what is called an Kaoss pad, in this case, integrated into the guitar. As Muse uses a lot of distortion in their music, its basically a tool to just that. If you see their recent song, Break it to me" live, then he uses it to play with there (also in other songs). Another recent song, Dig Down, they also use a Bass with a Kaoss pad live, where the pad functions as the strings.

So the “forbidden love” that you guessed in the song is correct. This is a song about Winston and Julia’s relationship in George Orwell’s 1984. While most of the album is based of off the book, this song in particular has more of a direct tie in with the book than the rest of the Resistance Album.

Great reaction, it makes me think of forbidden love during war with the drums sounding like gunfire at the start of the song

Oddly, this is my first time hearing them play their own song. I've only heard The warning do their cover of this when they were kids. I would definitely check out that video to appreciate.

What's really great about that album in general is that the writing is broad enough to cheer just about anybody up who had to deal with a form of persecution. Resistance in particular I listened to often when I came out of the closet.

Wasn't expecting this song to have its own reacting video, there are better live versions than this one @ Rome but the audio/video quality it's by far the best (thanks to the whole show being available on blu-ray and 4K), my #3 in my top 10 Muse songs; no idea why. Waiting for more Muse reaction videos!

PLEASE listen to Stockholm Syndrome at Glastonbury 2004. One of my favorite performances by them. Or Micro Cuts at Hullabaloo (not a mainstream song but a popular one among the Muse community). Subscribed for the Muse content. By far my favorite band :)

I actually didnt like this song or this rendition first time I listened to it. Matt Bellamy has said that he expected more of the song and never felt the song "kicked off live". So they basically only play this one, when they're in the USA

also this album is heavily, I mean heavily influenced by George Orwell's novel, 1984. So this song is apparently about the relationship between Winston and Julia in that book. This is also the album where they began setup albums after themes, so this album is very much about oppression, revolution and uprising

Muse is kind of what I think Pink Floyd would have been if they'd started AFTER three decades of hard rock and metal, instead of before. Both very introspective bands with great songwriting and musicianship.

If you want to hear a beautiful example of their layering and even changes between sections, Sing for Absolution Live at glastonbury 2004 even down to the way he sings the word absolution in the chorus gives a much greater appreciation for their music...

No, this is about "love during wartime", if you will. Certainly, they are living under some oppression and government intrusion, where their relationship is an act of defiance, of some kind.
