Recycling Aluminum - Melting an Aluminum Electrical Panel - Scrap to Treasure - Trash to Treasure

  • I had a friend give me an electrical panel that had burned up and he had to replace it. Rather than throw it in the trash, I melted it down to ingots and saved it from the landfill. It took a bit of time to break down and melt, but I enjoyed every second of it. I hope you enjoy watching this one as much as I did making it!

    I hope you all enjoy this one, I had a lot of fun breaking down and melting this electrical panel. I’ve been so busy with work and day to day life, I’m sorry for the delay in melting and posting, but I hope you like this one. It was fun to get a melt in. Have an awesome week and let me know what you think in the comments. Stay awesome my friends!

    What I appreciate about your channel and its videos is there’s no fluff or filler (i.e. no dogs, no beer drinking, no cooking, no eating, etc.). You’re just straight to the point and all business of melting and casting.

    Awesome red / black electrical thing! So, I thing it comes from an industrial electrical substation - If you can notice, at the extreme the right corner of the switchgear, the connector is burnt black and half molten! That's why the switchgear was scrapped!

    The brief check to make sure you still have all your fingers and didn't cut anything...
    All too real. Been there too often and always a bit of a heart stopper and a "did I just ruin my day by making the rest of it being in an urgent care or ER?"
    Glad you're ok.
    Is there some type of grease or something on it that you're wearing nitrile gloves for the takedown instead of work gloves?

    My melt went very badly today. I had a fair ammount of copper and the coating burned off of the steel I was using to stir it, turning almost all of the liquid into a slag monstrosity. I only saved a tiny bit of what could have been.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  Год назад +1

      Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. What were you stirring it with that had a coating? That sucks my friend, I make sure to use a bare metal spoon or anything when stirring. Don’t let it get or keep you down, every melt will get better. Stay strong and melt on Benny!

    Im curious as to why you can't melt magnetized metal? Ive been thinking about getting into this myself.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  Год назад +2

      When the metal is magnetic that means that it is ferrous. Ferrous metals contain iron, which in most cases I cannot get the furnace hot enough to reach their melting points.
      For example:
      Aluminums melting point is 1221 F
      Coppers melting point is 1984 F
      I can easily do these metals.
      Irons melting point is 2800 F
      That is just outside of my ability so I can’t melt things like iron and steel. 👍

    Why can you not melt magnetic metals?

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  Год назад +2

      Being magnetic implies that it is a ferrous metal(it contains iron) and the melting point of iron is 2,800 F, a temperature I can’t really reach and maintain.
