- Many people have heard of formants or formant filters, but what exactly is a formant? In this video, I explain what formants are, how they are formed, why they are important, demonstrate how they are used and manipulated both with synthesizers and when doing vocal editing.

Wow. Detailed explanation. Nicely done.
interesting stuff Scott. Always well explained.
Good as allways Scott!
This was awesome - super helpful! Thank you!
Been waiting for a vocal synthesizer. Casio just released what could have been one, but is not. The theoretical vocal synth I am imagining, would record my voice, or pass the voice through the processor. I would then have an engine designed specifically for vocals using subtractive, FM, granular, human voice. It would then be able to sing solo's with a monophonic keyboard, and choirs with a poly. Todays vocoders are getting very good at this, but don't sound human yet. Software wise the Symphonic Choir application is very good, but want a dedicated hardware synth where knobs and sliders control the variables, not typing in different phrases to move the vocal to the voice you are looking for. We can dream can't we :)
The problem with that idea is that vocoders use a specific carrier that is never going to be the same as a human voice, so a vocoder is always going to sound artificial. Interesting concepts you're describing however - have a look at the vocal capabilities of the Vital VST synth, it's quite decent.
good video
Hi, I'm looking for a low-cost synthesizer or pedal with which I can modulate the formant and pitch of my voice, I've found the zoom v6 and the roland vt4 but I'd like to know if there are other options, thanks in advance.
