    • @russellmoxham5625
      @russellmoxham5625 6 лет назад +9

      He is mentioned and he deserves to be, not least for his melodic freedom/abandon/imagination, something he will have recognised in the work of Django Reinhardt. Frank was also superb with effects. Arguably one thing that he did not have was the kind of vibrato that BB King could just throw out there for days on end, because, to my mind, there was a kind of horizontal soloish disposable-note-after-disposable-note thing in a lot of Frank's playing that was possibly closer to raga soloing than a lot of other high-level guitar in the West has been. He was never going to strike a chord with everyone but to me he's just great.

      Cedric Harris When FZ had put together the mobile UMRK, many studio recordings were built from live tracks. New material was tested live, and evolved, before it was committed to vinyl. Few musicians operated this way - concert attendees tend to want to hear the familiar stuff, which is why good cover bands can get good employment in clubs, as long as they are able to endure the boredom of playing the same tunes every day, and at least look like they enjoy it. FZ broke several molds.

    I've played lead guitar professionally in 3 rock bands, had FM airplay back in the day, played all kinds of venues, lots of studio work...love Vai, Satriani, Guthrie Govan, Lukather (even Bill Nelson ("who?!")...all those guys.
    But I keep coming back to this exquisite, moaning, all-Hell-breaking loose Frank Zappa solo...
    it's so wretched, raunchy, odd, brutal, and heartfelt awesome...crammed full of soul. And that one, brutal, stringed exclamation, "Oh Lawd, watch out, now...look out!" bend, from 2:53 - 2:55...
    ...that is why I keep coming back to this.
    Hands down, this is my favorite rock guitar solo of all time.

    Holy Mother Of God! The solo in Son Of Orange County still moves me to tears. It’s the most evocative, beautifully crafted of all FZ’s solos and the segue into More Trouble Every Day where Chester’s drum fills just thunder that sequence into life - no wonder Phil Collins employed him into Genesis without even auditioning him. This album is a fucking masterpiece. Genius.

      Chester took the drum break with him when he was drumming for Genesis... This is what Phil Collins said..."The thing that clinched me with Chester was a song called "More Trouble Every Day" (by Zappa, on Roxy & Elsewhere), which he and Ralph Humphrey play, and I heard that drum fill, which we actually do at the end of "Afterglow". They did that fill on the Zappa song and it floored me completely. I saw what two drummers could do. It could be like a machine. I play flams quite a lot, and with my flams and another drummer you get this huge, sort of solid, thick, backbeat. So one of the first things we did when I met Chester was get him to teach me that lick, and we always put it in the show somewhere. But that was really just listening to him. I had never met him. I rang him up and said, "Hi Chester, I've heard your stuff, would you like to play with Genesis?" He came over as a member. He didn't even audition. He just came over and set up his drums and was started rehearsing."

    Keep in mind that most of Franks solos were impromptu. Done on the spot. This shows his real genius. Most leads have a climax to them which gives structure and also they tell a story on its own. And no one has the style Frank had. One of a kind.

    This lp is indeed stunning, especially this portion. I couldn't have come up with the guitar solo in s.o.o.c. with my wildest imagination. The subtleties are freaking brilliant.

    This album is still a classic. As only Zappa could do it. The guitar solos are some of the best. Each has a unique sound and each musician has to be one of the best.

    chills all over the body from 04:25 to about 4:50.
    and again at 6:00 to 6:30.
    no other guitar solo would ever go so directly under the skin...
    That's not music, it's pure erotic ;-)

    I saw Zappa in 1973 with a variation of this lineup. He is also a great accompanist and I watched him getting into his own music and enjoying the playing of this awesome band. His guitar says things to me that are different from other players but I avoid comparisons, so and so is better than some other player etc. However this solo is total filth. Exactly what he was aiming for I believe!

    If most people weren't dolts, then FZ wouldn't ever have been viewed as an "acquired taste" by said plentiful dolts. Thank gawd for the ones that supported him and "got it" & understood true musicality.
