  • Join award-winning novel Ann Patchett in conversation with Erin Whiting about Tom Lake, her eagerly-awaited new novel set in Northern Michigan. The novel probes many aspects of love-from youthful passion to the contentment of marriage to the welcome embrace of family when the outside world falls apart.
As three sisters shelter on a family cherry farm in Traverse City during the pandemic, they urge their mother to share details of an early romance with a now-famous actor in the fictional town of Tom Lake. So begins the at-once hopeful and reflective narrative that unspools in many directions, weaving a tapestry of past and present.

I just finished reading ‘Tom Lake’ and adored it. As an Australian, I had no familiarity with Thornton Wilder’s ‘Our Town’, so I watched on RUclips, the 2003 Broadway performance of the play starring Paul Newman as the Stage Manager. It brought the novel and the play together in a very beautiful and meaningful way. Thank you for this fabulous interview.

.We all have a blind spot, right? That bit of incorrect information from childhood that mysteriously never gets updated, the person who makes it to thirty-five believing that unicorns had been hunted into extinction.”
    “Wait, unicorns weren’t hunted . . .”
He smiled at me, tipping his head to one side as if to say I was adorable, as in, I was to be adored.
    Hi,
How would you interpret the play-word in " was adorable, as in, I was to be adored."please?

Ann dissuaded me from writing a novel, because I just have to read hers, and I’m satisfied!

As someone from northern Michigan, I can always tell when someone sets a book there but isn't from there - not with this book! Ann did a wonderful job writing about a very special place.

I only knew of this book because I grew up in East Detroit. I heard about it from another alumni. So, for me, even if Lindsey had written it, I would have read it. It was wonderful.
