That's a great idea. We were all talking about a substitute cookie Mrs. Evelyn and crushing the cookies you have left and topping the dish would be a really great idea. As a matter of fact, I think it would possibly be better than whole cookies on the top, they would absorb more of the pudding, maybe. I will admit though, the Chess cookies look so pretty on top in whole form. Mrs. Paula used Pepperidge Farm in her video but you could substitute with Lorna Doone or Walkers. Now, I've never heard of Walkers so I'm not sure if you can buy those in the grocery store or do you have to purchase online in a specialty shop. Here we can buy both Pepperidge Farm and Lorna Doone at the grocery store. I was thinking that the Pepperidge Farm Chess cookies looked really big but it stands to reason that when refrigerated for several hours, they get to a cake consistency, which sounds really good. That banana pudding and a cold glass of whole milk (not that 2% stuff) would be incredible. I mean, you are eating a rich decadent dessert, why not treat yourself to a glass of whole milk. OK, everyone enjoy, I love Mrs. Paula.

When I was alone an elderly woman who was half blind asked me if I liked banana pudding. I told her yes and next when she saw me she smiled and said this is for you. She had given me a large Pyrex bowl full of banana pudding. Then after that every once in a while she would say this is for you. Then one day she moved to a nursing home in another state and I never saw her again. She always talked about God and salvation. I will never forget her. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

@@diannenaworensky6698 I thought the same thing Mrs. Dianne but trust me, the Pepperidge Farm Chess Cookies are slap your mama good. They are a little pricey so I switched to Lorna Doone shortbread cookies and they are the same cookie but 1/2 the cost. You need so many cookies in this recipe that you could go with 1 bag of each and use the chess cookies on top to make the dish look pretty. Someone suggested if you don't have enough cookies, you could crush what you have left and sprinkle over the top. I like that idea a lot too. You have a total of 3 layers of cookies and I'm sure there is enough Lorna Doone in one bag to use for the bottom 2 layers and then Pepperidge Farm for the top. Gosh y'all, this is making me so hungry. A tall glass of cold whole milk would round out this recipe into the better than sex banana pudding.

Love this recipe! My granny used to make fried grits with leftover grits. I can't find anyone who knows how to make them. I know she used eggs and they were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. They were absolutely delicious. I've tried many times with egg and a little flour and can't get them right. Of course she didn't write anything down and used coffee cups, pinches and "dabs" as her measures. Does anyone know how to make them?

***FUN FACT*** (and a super easy way to save about $4!!!)
I think we can all agree than the bags of Chessman cookies are rather EXPENSIVE… so if you don’t want to buy the 3rd bag just to cover the top then take a few cookies from the first 2 layers and mix them with the 6 or 8 you have left when you get to the top and put them in a ziploc bag and crumble them up by hitting with your hand or something firm and then just sprinkle them over the top instead of layering the whole cookies on top. I know you won’t get the little cute “chessmen” on the top but hey… we’re going for flavor here not so much appearance. Not to mention, when your peeps taste the banana pudding you made, honestly they will forget all about the appearance, or the lack there of!!! AND, it STILL taste the exact same as it does with whole cookies. Believe me, for I have done it both ways!!! 💯💯💯
    Oh… just 1 more thing… y’all can thank me later!!! 😂😂😂

I also knew that it made him feel like he was still "useful" after he had retired. He's been gone for 11 years now & I'd give just about anything to be able to make this version for him.
