- There have been a considerable number of sightings of the MP-443 pistols in Ukraine over the past two months, unsurprising as it is the Russian armed forces issue sidearm. In this video we look at the pistol's history, design and use in Ukraine.

That civilian barrel intentionally being made weaker is absolutely cringe; it just reinforces the stereotype of Russian designs damning user safety at all levels.
not sure if this was done by baikal for the british market blank firing pistols, to prevent from converting them to proper firearms again.
We don't call it a non gun but yes it is deactivated to UK specs, around 2011 according to the owner.

The steel core does not make it armor piercing -especially out of a handgun. I'd be curious as to hardness of the steel. The US uses 5.56x45 62 grain 'green tips' which have a steel tip and core and the reason is primarily barrier penetration as modern body armor stops it easily. I think, since hollow point ammo (ok to use for civilian personal defense and by law enforcement) is verboten for armed conflicts. It makes so much sense, right? Just guessing the 7N21 9 x 19 is very high pressure for a handgun and the steel core will work like the old 5.45 x 39mm surplus we used to get. It looked like standard FMJ ammo except right behind the tip was a pocket of air followed by a steel core. This was good for barriers and would often tumble causing rather nice wound channels.

@TheArmourersBench keep in mind you have the "sport" version of the pistol. You can tell by the "C" at the end - the "C" stands for "Sport" in Russian. The build quality of the metal army variant is different
The Yarigin pistol enjoys a hate/love relationship within the Russian law enforcement. Its quality can be all over the place. In fact many batches don't have interchangeable parts with other batches. Plus the machining is not top notch, so it's easy to cut your hand.
That is why they modernized it recently. Meant to fix all the above issues.

@josedorsaith5261 many of the quality issues that were reported where with earlier models of the pistols made on old factory machining. Since the machining has been replaced the new batches have been far more reliable
I've wanted one of these ever since Battlefield 3. Honestly all the unobtainium Russian sidearms are friggin cool like the MP412 Rex, OTs-38, Udar, etc.
I'm sure they suck in practical use, but western manufacturers would never make things that look that bonkers
Well, Western manufacturing has a lot of striker fired stuff, so that tells you the value of using Western corporations as a gauge.

Story of my life, I fell in love with all those guns because of battlefield lol. Along with with the CZ75 (which I'm really tempted to pick up).
That's very similar to a Ruger P95, but the P95 has a way better trigger.
Its far more like the Browning BDM and BDA. The trigger angle is almost identical.
My first thought to, looks like a they adopted one of the wonder 9’s from the 90’s.
Man....now you got me thinking about how much I miss my old P-95.

I have one of the MP-446 Vikings with the steel frame, these were imported to Australia a while back and you can still find them floating around. I hate the sights mine came with, it's like a "target" style but really it's just non-serrated blades which just disappear. I have been trying to find a set of the 3 dot for years just to replace them. The double action feels odd with a sort of hump? Like it's not a consistent weight but feels like it gets heavier towards the end. The single action wasn't too bad but again the worst part is the target sights. It does have an odd feel to it, like it is comfortable in the hand but it feels lighter than it should be, with a fully loaded mag it feels like there is a bunch of weight missing from the slide. I reckon with the thicker original barrel it would balance well, but nothing short of a Ukranian capture would solve that. To me it feels a little like a drastically simple P226. The double feed mag is a noveltly, it's kinda fun to use a MP5 speed loader and just ram the rounds in, then you can laugh at the people loading one at a time.
I like the 226 and have a legion p226 . I think in Australia is it hard to get guns or am I wrong?
@@ladykiller4832 I wouldn't say hard, just long and arduous. If you're committed to it and want to shoot competitions then yeah you can, but expect a 6 month wait at least before even being able to buy a handgun.
@John Kale copy is probably a strong word, having both they don't really have any functional similarities. Anymore so than all DA/SA double stack 9mms do. I just think it balances somewhat like a P226.
IIRC this pistol was developed at a time when the Russian military was doing really badly financially, in the late 1990's to early 2000's, so I'm not surprised.
@@Waldemarvonanhalt yeah there is some Russian videos about and from what I gathered on the auto translation they didn't like it much. The first versions had pretty bad quality control
There is some footage of Glocks as well before this current invasion, by Russian sniper teams in Crimea and such.
I've seen some Russian operators running Western kit, including Glocks. Seen one or two holstered in Ukraine but not many! Thanks for watching.

Problem is, Ian isn't going to Russia anytime soon and we were never allowed to import modern Russian military pistols into the USA due to certain import restrictions made in the 80's. Maybe if he took a trip to Armenia? Or a UA armed forces member was willing to export one to the US, but that would be a fairly tedious and expensive process to do it legally.

@@the7observer I think he will take a trip to either UA or Russia once the war is over and things reach a state of normalcy but who knows how long that will be. But I do agree there are a ton of weird, interesting Soviet and post Soviet guns that would be cool to see a FW video on including the Grach.

A pistol holding a total of 19 rounds of armour piercing ammunition seems like a good thing to have as a backup gun intended to be used against an enemy equipped with body armour and ballistic resistant helmets.
Great video. I'd be interested to know more about that issue ammunition. If it's particularly hot, are there aspects of the pistols that are reinforced?

Interesting. Looks like 1970's tech to me. I like the double-stack magazine like the HK VP-70. Makes the gun chunky, but maybe more reliable? More capacity, but they chose the same capacity as with the Glock with a double-stack, single-feed system? Curious.
It would be very cool to see parts kits of these appear in the United States, though that’s obviously highly unlikely. Printing the plastic framed variant would be a really interesting project.

If I remember right the Steyr GB magazine is like this. You can load it just like a rifle magazine.
The Steyr GB is a very cool pistol. Steyr were very surprised when it lost in trials to a pistol made by a guy who's prior experience was tupperware and farm equipment.
It took Russia the same time to develop, finalize, and widely issue an outdated imitation of 1980s DA pistols in the time the US developed and fielded two stealth fighter lines.
Why were we surprised when they fumbled Ukraine? Lol

I totally appreciate that sentiment as I too share a deep love with DA/SA guns. And I truly do believe they’ve had a unfairly quick fall from grace and popularity. My favorite and most used handgun in my collection is my mk25 and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
That being said I think it’d be dumb to deny the fact the striker fired polymer framed handguns are simply just more modern and convenient.
I still think DA/SA guns excel in some areas but there’s just no denying that it’s a old and outdated system by and large.
I think Eric Schwamms point here still stands.
The fact that this is their current issue sidearms speaks volumes.
@@AJ-gk7bn I think going off what theyre issuing should not be read into too much detail. They want to replace worn out equipment with a "something". That "something" was specifically chosen because it was underbid. It was specifically said in the acceptance brief that they undercut Glock at the last minute. It is wholly in vogue because manufacturers love the fact that people want to buy the product with cheaper production (look at a glock FCG and then look at any double action). There was nothing stopping them from just buying more 92s and in fact the M9A3 was submitted. Sig probably has more bribe money in play.
@@ericmckinley7985 Sig banked on the Army being too greedy to turn down such a low price and it payed off. The fact that they didn't even go through the final phase of testing just to save money is pathetic, especially when those P320s ended up actually having issues that could've been found out much earlier. I'm the last person to ever defend Glock, but even I can tell they got shafted here, along with Beretta.

@@wonderloaf not only UK. Deactivated guns are a big market in Europe as you don't need a license or it's not added to your license. Useful if there are limited slots on a license or for guns you could not own otherwise

I seriously doubt a Select Fire pistol is as accurate as a match pistol.
@@MrSniperdude01 its a fixed barrel. Full auto does not mean weaker mechanical accuracy and it has a semi mode. Its big, beefy, and well built. I can only imagine high accuracy.

Looks like a good design, much like the Makarov it replaced. Say what you want about the original Makarov, but it was simple, accurate, and with a smooth trigger pull.
The Mak was a perfect weapon for people who weren't expecting to actually use it.
@@travistucker1033 It's simply a proper recognition of what a military pistol is: a last-ditch weapon intended for very close range. You don't need a very large, heavy, hard-hitting pistol for this. You need something that is rugged, reliable, and easy to shoot well.

@@ladykiller4832 Lack of a manual safety makes them unsuitable for general military use. The requirements for a military pistol are different than a police pistol. The wearer may crawl through mud, gravel, or anything else, and this can get into the holster. They need a barrier to activation beyond just the trigger.

how does it qualify as being an inactive weapon again I'm certain it's not something you couldn't just reactivate it by aquiring the necessary component's not included with it to make it a non firing replica I've seen certain ones that would give it a plugged barrel and weld's certain parts of the actions main piece's together to remove the ability to achieve it's proper functionality again and allows only partial use of the trigger and permits only the ability to give u demonstrationial capabilities of the cocking mechanism an it's only
- it's hammer, firing pin gas piston missing .
And has several areas grounded away to render that part permanently incapable of it's being reactivated again in theory....
.. and all this being fine and good but aren't they just assuming someone wouldn't know how to aquire the necessary pieces and have the proper understanding of firearms to make what was incapable be once more made capable of operational use do they think there isn't such a thing as spare parts or retrofitting and fabricating the piece's from scratch or having them milled by a CNC metal 3D

@William Tell that's true I'd have to agree with u there but even most lawfully minded people will purchase totally legal parts kits and use just that alone to assemble and build there rifle's here in the states they were able to build a complete Glock pistol from entirely just parts and using the polymer 80% lower receivers that they could buy from eBay they've only barely just enacted the ATF guidelines to counter it and that's after 7yrs and the untold millions of cheaply made unregistered Glock clones that they were able to make being loosed out into the pipeline of legitimately made serial numbered firearms not mention the equally unknown number of the millions AR lower receivers that they have made in that time
I used to own an MP446 Viking. It was a great gun... Heavy, VERY heavily reinforced chamber for shooting +P. The double stack, double feed mags were cool. Wish I never sold it. Looking at The chamber I would've feel comfortable shooting +P+ rounds thru it, but everyone's risk tolerance is decent. It has a surprisingly decent trigger, both in DA & SA.
I don’t know why they say they have weekend the barrel mine works absolutely fine with Nato +p ammo so far

It’s only truly distinguishing feature is the full double-stacked magazine. This must make for some girth near the trigger. The only advantage I can see to this arrangement is that it may mean a higher magazine capacity, which translates into fewer reloads when shooting bound hostages in the back of the head.
That's basically all a sidearm is good for in war anyway.

If these pistols are DA/SA with frame mounted safeties but *no decocker* , does that mean the pistols are able to be carried in Single Action with the safety on (AKA "cocked and locked")?
Yep, just like the older models of Beretta DA/SA pistols (e.g. the 92BB) can be carried cocked-and-locked. It does of course mean that if you _do_ want to carry it with the hammer decocked then you've got to do it "manually", which can be done safely but requires you to pay attention to what you're doing and keep a firm grip on the hammer with your thumb as you slowly pull the trigger.
I was trying to place where the Russians copied this from, the angle of the DA/SA trigger gives it away as being lifted from the Browning BDM or BDA. Its very very similar to the BDM, the grip angle and proportions are almost identical.

Not too much, there have been a few of the various RPC Fort pistols seen in photos from the field but not too many. I'm keeping a look out for them.

There was a picture posted a while back of an A-545 on a bed, I don't think it was taken in Ukraine thougb but by border guard or something. First time I have actually seen one in the hands of a user though.

@@TheArmourersBench There must have been potential there for the A-545 considering they have adopted it alongside the AK-12, I would like to think that it was the rifle the army really wanted but the budget wasn't there to adopt the rifle wide scale. Granted though I still think it would need some improvements over time to fix out the little problems similar to the AK-12. Some problems have likely already been fixed with the A-545, I know the AK-12 has some corrosion problems with corrosive primers but once stocks of those primers have been used up it's non-corrosive from then on. No idea on how well the rail on the A-545 keeps zero though?

Not sure how this pistol will do in civilian market especially for America. Perhaps mixed review of hating the thing or equivalent of shooting Beretta 92FS.

Very uncomfortable firearm. The one that I shot from had mag or mag well of really bad designed shape, so tip of the mag can snag the edge of the well and prevent you from inserting a mag. It doesn't slide in as smoothly as in Glock, and lost second or two here can eventually cost you life. Shitty gun, actually.
They have one at our local range, I shot it it's nothing remarkable but seems decent enough. After seeing this video I shall give it another try.

MP-446 is one of my favorite pistols however there's a certain 'kick' to it which I dislike, it's not a striking kick but rather a soft but strong one like with 12 gauge, it's nothing lethal but it certainly drives the gun away from the target. Maybe 443 has it smoother.
That gun isn’t anything special….My CZ PCR is a far better gun than this.

Its kind of a waste. If I had equip an army on a budget, I'd buy today's missiles, tanks from the 1970's, rifles from the 1960's and pistols from 1920's.
I always love seeing all the gripe about Canadians and Australians still using browning high powers. Like it's almost 100 years old but is almost identical to most modern pistols (except the steel frame)

I would check you against buying 70s tanks considering the common state of most T-72B3s in Ukraine. Also thats literally what most armed forces do. The AR is a 50s design.
I absolutely hate the idea of such a heavy D/A pistol. The Sig 226/229, Browning high power, 1911 and M9 are usually all steel frames but have great SA/DA triggers, ergonomics and handling

Idk maybe I played too much battlefield as a kid, but I've always thought these were neat as hell. Would love to be able to handle one. If things keep going the way they are though imo this is going to become the luger or p38 of the 21st century..
I think if I was Russian I'd rather one of the PL-15 pistols that the Grach. They do have some interesting pistols in Russia. The GSh-18 is pretty interesting with its rotating barrel locking. I'm pretty sure the military Grach pistols actually had a steel frame and only the 446 Viking civilian ones had the polymer frames. It was supposedly also due to firing the 7N21 and 7N31 AP rounds.
I handled a deactivated version in the UK about 10 years ago and as this model was supplied by Cold War Collectables, I almost know 100% who supplied them this particular piece and that it was THIS one I handled.
In short - it's a wonderful piece. The shrouded hammer and double stack SMG type feed is 100% reliable. It would serve the USA market very well if this could be manufactured here in the USA.

On what planet is your mind if you think that this thing would be any kind of "success" here in the US? And I'm talking about BEFORE Russia invaded a sovereign neighbor country and started the mass rapes and murders of unarmed Ukrainian women and girls and ruined whatever teeny, tiny shred of public goodwill that third world sh!thole of a country had here in the US? Even most of the totally brain dead MAGA Trump nut-huggers have stopped supporting Putin.
Even if we are traveling back in time to August of 2021 when nobody even CONSIDERED Russia invading Ukraine, the first point to make about this gun is that this thing is UGLY AF!!! It looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff of an old Ruger P89. Second, the gun has been DELIBERATELY WEAKENED by the factory to "prevent the use of high pressure ammo". So the Russians have quite literally made this POS dangerous for civilians to shoot. And third, why would ANYONE buy this thing over ANY of the actually GOOD tupperware 9mm Glock copies that are out there on the market today?
This gun would exclusively sell in small numbers to "collectors". Either gun collectors in general or to people who specifically collect Soviet/Russian-made firearms. Your average gun owner wouldn't even CONSIDER one of these things. It's not like we are talking about an AK or an SVD. Those are both legendary Soviet firearms. This POS is an ugly, Chinese-looking knockoff of a Ruger pistol that has ALSO already been discontinued because nobody really even liked those things either! I am most certainly NOT seeing what you are seeing in this turd.

Can one buy such Deactivated pistols in UK?
This was one of seven which were imported into the UK via Germany before the 2014 ban on Russian firearms products.
In typical Russian fashion, take the well evolved Browning design and make it funky.

I am actually looking for a pistol with a roller delayed blowback, so you can fit a really big suppressor on and still have it function right.
I would still love to get some detailed CAD model so it can be made. :)
How much would it take to reactivate the gun? Or to put it in another perspective; what did they do to deactivate the pistol/gun?

It looked like it had a magazine disconnect during the quick look inside. Does it have a magazine disconnect? It'd be a shame as with a hammer fired poly firearms, there's decent trigger possibilities.
3:15 You say double feed is to increase feed reliability. This is unlikely. Double feed is notably more difficult to engineer for consistent feeding with different ammunition types, hence the reason that virtually all semi auto handguns and even many traditional pistol caliber SMGs are double stack, single feed.
This is very much true, and actually feeding issues was the reason why the troops hated the earlier version of the gun. They fixed it in the later models (I believe precisely switching to double stack, single feed), but the bad reputation stuck.
That was the intention but it failed and they have since moved to a single feed (which I mentioned) and a reprofiled feed ramp.
Most smg's are double feed not single feed. MP5, UMP, CZ Scorpion, Colt SMG and dozen of others. Single feed smg's are much less common and are more prone to have feeding issues if the mags are not perfect. The Sten is a good example of that problem.

@@themastermason1 well that's not what he typed. He specifically said at the end that he was referring to SMG's. But ignoring that little bit and focusing on the other stuff he said he's still incorrect about a lot of things. His claim that double feed systems are unreliable is inaccurate. Yes they do take more effort to get them feed correctly as he said, but once that engineering work is done they are more reliable than single feed systems. He assumption about why they are not commonly used for handguns is also incorrect. The reason why double stack single feed mags are used in most handguns comes down to packaging. Most handguns don't have the room for a double stack double feed magazine. The few that do use them like the Steyr GB are larger than comparable handguns. The only reason why most civilian PCC's use double stack single feed mags is to reduce development costs by not creating a new magazine and to use existing pistol mags.

I would expect the Beretta 92FS to perform better in dust/mud situations because of its open-slide design. The Beretta almost never suffers from failure-to-eject ("stovepipe") malfunctions.
On the other hand maybe the open-slide design would mean more mud or dust can get into the action.
The 92 is actually an evolution of the Walther P38. Think of it as a prettier P38 with a smoother, lighter DA trigger pull and a double-stack magazine. Meanwhile the Grach reminds me of a Browning BDM.
