From Singapore 🇸🇬; Thank you for bringing to the masses the reality to some extend. Disparaging remarks on the underdogs, exploitation of poor people or by way of segregation like castes and by gender, especially women at various levels of society seems paramount in any country. Yet as a society the degradation of the Devaradiyars as rightly pointed out is so prominent that people in Tamil Nadu must bow their heads in shame and make some sincere efforts to acknowledge this societal crime...and seek reconciliation... i.e take efforts to right the wrong done to these exploited people and their decedents.. The once highly respectful lineage of the devaradiyars spread from south India to the far-reaches of South East Asian dynasties; through Chola and Pandiya empires ..and they too saw similar well placed artistes and religious specialists to be exploited in laterdays. I read some where that the sacrosanct arts or "AAYA KALAIGAL" ,classified as 64 distinct expertise skills, and often this is well taught in a systematic and disciplined way by the devaradiyars...a vast range of skills from archery, horse riding to various skills. They were also well placed in the circle of poets and scribes who record and take account of the riches earned and spent by the governing body or at least the religious institution they belong to. There were even women warriors who tried to fight invaders entering Tanjavur temples and they engaged in running battles to protect temples and its wealth and many died rather than fall at the feet of the invaders. From Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines (Manipiravala Theevugal) to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam the later day courtesan were from the exploited servants of the gods...from a system established by the dravidian dynasties. Another similar example is like the Japanese Geishas who simply became entertainers and people would refer to their promiscuous behaviour rather than comment on their skills in music and cultural practices like the Tea ceremony. And they also played a vital role as unofficial diplomats!..There were many who turned to become Buddhist nuns (for e.g Manimaegalai, daughter of Madhavi) which provided better protection for these women dedicated to the Gods. Arts defined as dance and music seem to be over simplified..in attributing to the skills of devaradiyars...or later day devadasis.. very simplified to describe their expertise while many delved in the real literature and cultural nuances to have become respected leaders in society in the past. For example the Devaradiyars are the ones who must bless the "thali" to be tied by any bridegroom onto the bride at any wedding and so they are treated next to God...like wise they also were maternal symbols for many orphans who they raised as temple workers and go between managers within the general public and the royal administration. It us said that the kings gave great respect to their views in Governing the people. All these high esteem and respect were lost as society became divided as wealth dwindled and swindled from kings to smaller business people who saw no sin in exploiting the subsequent generations of such saviors to the lord as their own property afterall they subsidised the costs involved in building and maintaining religious institutions. I feel, today, we at least see remnants of our art and culture because of the few who carried on with great respects to further their knowledge in music, art and culture, mostly by teaching their known skills to their off springs...and some like Rukumani devi who systematically taught and built the specific structure that we see today as Bharathanatiyam dance. This is just one example. But in another aspect the rules preventing one from teaching others and from learning dor e.g music, by the higher or lower segregated groups, were broken and today many artistes of various skills come from different clans and groups which were not practicing these arts centuries ago.

Madam, Devaradiyar were the devoted girls to temples for Aarathi to God and Goddesses and to perform devotional songs and dance performances to gods in temples in Tamilnadu. But the Devadasi system were prevailing in Andhraduring Vijayanagars Nayakkars period. King sambuvarayar was last Tamil king in Tamil Nadu. Krishnadevaraya exported the Andhra devadasis to Tamil soldiers and defeated Sambuvarayar by filthy methods as above and Krishna devaraya captured the temples of Tamil Nadu and inducted their devadasis in the temple authorities. People have their cofusion and are not able to ditinguish between Devaradiyar and Devadasis. Many research theses are available in Universities for reference
Actually devadashis were like Christian nuns who dedicated their life to temples, they take all temple chores like preparing decoration artifacts, garlands, prasadham etc.. and then used to happen lots of festivals and performances mostly in sadhir aatam (mother of bharathanaatyam) where they sing about divine and dance at the same time.. these women are happy till British brutal dogs made them dashis. Later these dogs framed history as if it were our practice. Dig in and know the true history from research scholars like deivanayagam ayya
