In this video I explain why your speedlight flash may get stuck at 14mm, 17mm, or another wide angle number. It is because the wide angle diffuser is not seated back in the flash. When the wide angle diffuser is out, your flash will always default to it's widest zoom setting, which has a smaller number than is typical.
I go on to discuss the basics of zoom, how it's designed to function, and how you can use it to get more control using light modifiers.
I illustrate this using some of my favorite flash products, like the Godox V860II, and Godox V350. Knowing how to control your zoom is a basic fundamental of on and off camera lighting with speedlights. This video applies to all speedlites such as Nikon SB-900 / SB-800, Canon 600ex-rt and 580ex ii, and Yongnuo YN-565 and YN-560 IV.
Rob, You're a life saver! Just about to pack my new Godak V860 ii o back into its box etc and return to the supplier because the zoom setting wouldn't move from 7mm. Having found your video, I checked the wide angle diffuser and found I hadn't pushed it completely home. Problem solved. Many, many thanks
Same....he saved a return!! V860 III F
I've been wondering why my flash stock at 14mm. Good thing I have watched your video
Video was great. Answered my question on zoom and more. Going to subscribe
Thank you so much for this info. Im just a newbie to photography and i included flash accessory because I want to try this one. Its like nearly an hour and I dont know also why is it stuck on 12mm or 14mm. 😅
I search for tutorial and your video is the first choice.
Hope you keep on making helpful tips like this. I just subscribed to you. Thank you and God bless.
Thank you so much! I've thought I damaged something right after buying this, but thank god I'm not!
Great video... I might missed, but how should I set the zoom when using a softbox or those softbox with little beauty dish? Thanks!!
In both instances I would suggest either 24mm or keeping the WA diffuser up.
Thank you, was doing my head in
Would that also apply to 28mm?
Thanks! I thought there was something wrong with my flash, but you taught me a valuable lesson. Thanks so much!!
Oh my goodness... you solved my problem with the being stuck at 14mm. If you drink beer and you were near I'd buy you a few. Thanks, dude.
Just got myself a Godox V860III and I was wondering why this was, thanks for getting straight to the point and explaining everything so clearly
Thanks! Solved my issue, the funny thing is that automatic Zoom doesn’t work anymore when in automatic mode. Any tips? YN685
Thanks so much dude, i really don't know till i watched ur video.
I see you removed the previous raw version of this video but I have to say this video combined with the previous unedited video would be an amazing learning tool for folks wanting to get into RUclips. I know I personally learned a few things by now seeing both of them. Just a thought.... And of course great video content as well, thanks!
Me too!
Thanks so much. Stuck at 14mm problem solved! This is the best video I've seen on the Godox TT685. I thought my control wheel was not functioning since I couldn't adjust the focal length and get it out of manual setting and back to auto. Live and learn.
You explained this so much better than all these other videos that are trying to explain how to use this type of flash. Thank YOU!
Literally nobody else on the internet has talked about this zooming beep. Thank you!!
I liked the previous unedited video 👍
Me too!
Dude thanks a lot I just got my flash and I was playing with it and it was stuck at 14mm you solved my headache in first 2min of your video I already started thinking :
Why always me... 🥺whhhyyyy?????😀😀
This just saved me from returning a flash! Thank you
Thank you so much!!!!
So helpful Thank you
Oh wow, I have been tearing my hair out trying to solve this problem. But what annoys me the most is that Godox don't even mention the diffuser in their manual let alone having to have it pushed all the way in. How can these companies be so stupid. Just another point to get the zoom working correctly is that on a Canon EOS R5 camera you need to also go into the red menu number 2 and under "External Speedlite control/Flash function settings" turn on "Zoom AUTO"
This was really helpful Rob. I've used speedlights on a few occasions but didn't really know how to control them. I couldn't figure out why the zoom function didn't work either but thanks to your video, now I do 👍🙏

Thanks Rob. I thought would have to return my new Godox TT350n.
I cannot believe it; I've been wracking my brains trying to figure out not only why I couldn't change the mm length of my flash range, but also why flash wasn't firing on manual mode. Stunned it was such a simple fix and that I came across your video by random chance. Got two big wedding jobs coming up and was freaking out that I wouldn't figure out the solution. Thanks so much!
I never would have thought to check if the bounce card or diffuser were out just a tad. Thanks! I'm using the Nikon SB-5000 and the manual does not mention this.😃😃
You saved a return!! Just received a brand new V860III F, could not get the "zoom" to auto, selector not operable. Sure enough, the diffuser lens was not all the way seated back in the flash head. Wow, what a simple concept.
thank you so much man...you tip worked... extremely happy 👍👍👍👍🤘🤘
I am a photographer with 10 years of experience, and I couldn't figure out why the fuck it was stuck at 14mm. Such a simple little thing. Thank you for cutting straight to the chase.
Thanks for the tip and other info! Just got my flash, and was wondering why it was on 14mm - turns out the wide-angle flash card was just barely pulled up!
Thank you. Great information! I'm understanding it so much better just now as i go off to shoot more important events....🙏
now I was desperate ....thank you so much for solving my problem ...
I love this guy. He knows his sh*t!!! Thanks so much for this!!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾📸📸
Eh I have Godox v860ii and this video didn’t help me unfortunately. No matter how much I push this thing down until it clicks, the zoom is still stuck at 14mm. It wasn’t like that when I just bought the flashlight but it happened 2 months in and then it never started working as normal again :(
I figured that out myself however out of my 2x V860II I have one that automatically goes to 80mm zoom as I'm using a 85mm F1.4 lens, but the other Godox flash for some stupid reason goes to 50mm in Auto mode, wtf?!
I have been using my Godox TT685 since 2 years , using flash on camera i always get low light and have to open high iso , i finally came to know after 2 years about settings of flash for zoom option , thenk you for explaining it in very easy way
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was going crazy to figure this out. 😂
Your a genius! I fought with my flash for 2 days before I found this video.. ty. My flash is no longer stick on 14mm. Lol!

Had this Problem exactly on Location. Thanks very much!!
Thank you Man. I have been wondering why this thing is happening, since long time. You saved me..
finally solved my problem, the manual that comes with the v860iii only explains how to set it to auto but not that its influenced by this card
Thank you! I have a shoot tomorrow and was losing my mind over why my V860ii was stuck at 14mm.
Thanks for the video. I just got my Godox tt685c for my Canon T7i and could not figure out why I could not manually adjust the flash. It was stuck on 14mm and yes I had the diffuser out. One question though. I am a complete newb with speedlites and I cannot figure out how to place the unit into auto zoom?
I just want to say thank you, this video helped me a lot. Thanks so much brother.
Exactly the information I wanted, saved me heaps of time.
Спасибо тебе, добрый человек. Голову сломала, почему на 14 mm застряло! Думала, что бракованная попалась!
Excellent information! I was about to return my newest flash thinking it was broken being stuck in 14mm. I’m having a hard time mastering off camera flash. Thank you.
No one anywhere and even limit live explains the zoom getting stuck at 14mm . I only wish I found this Video before I wasted hours of time trying to figure out if my new flash was defective Thank you
Thank you so much ☺️; this 14mm thing was driving me crazy 🤣
OMG. i thought my flash was broken. Thank you!
I also had the "stuck at 14 mm issue". Thank you so much for the solution!
What if my flash is stuck at 14mm but it doesn’t have a button to change the zoom
Excellent quick answer. Love you man!!!
That first video was such a trip. At first I thought it was a joke then I thought you were just throwing in some bloopers to see behind the scenes. After some time I realized wow this is his raw footage he will be editing from. It was great to see! I liked seeing the thought process as you stopped mid sentence when you realized it was heading in the wrong direction, paused, then started again. Glad I was one of the lucky who got to see it. Thanks and I love all your videos on lighting and other things.
Thank you so much for your clear explanations!
Brilliant problem solved. Thanks 😊
Ohh god!! U saved me...i thought my flash is defective 😢😢
Wish I knew this 4 hours and 2 speedlights ago. Thanks some of my sanity has now returned.

good thing i watched this. My diffusor was down lol
:D Thank you, i was getting crazy
Great video!!! Thanks 🙏🙏
Hey thanks for the video. Do you know why Nikon flashes auto zoom sometimes works and sometimes does not? For example, with my SB-910 on an APS-C body using an APS-C/DX 18-200, the flash follows the zoom throughout the range. No matter what I set on the SB-5000, can't get it to autozoom past 135. any ideas
figured this out... "illumination pattern", one of the settings on the SB-5000, the default is STD. if you're bouncing your flash, TTL-BL, max autozoom will be 135< with STD. change it to EVEN, and it lets me go to 200! the whole 18-200. yay!
you saved me a lot of trouble.thanks
thank you men for this video
you gave me the idea to solve my problem
Sweet Jesus! Thank you so much!!
