Thank you, I'm an engineer, and I know zero about photography. Bought a flash for my t3i and going to the Amazon rainforest with my son and a macro lens in 10 days. wish me luck.
Some people joke about not being good at drawing but you were dead serious lol. It got the point across though and that was very helpful, thanks for the tip!
Hi Kobus, thank you SO much for making this video. I was looking to find out about the zoom function in TTL...and this explanation is perfect. I am now wondering what to do when there is no wall, or a black wall. also I bought a magsphere and I bet that changes things a lot as well. I'll check it out and try different settings for myself. But now at least I know more about what the zoom setting actually does.
thank you for explaning the mm when there is a bounce off the ceiling. However, wouldn't you get softer light when shooting 24 mm as the light is more spread out vs 100mm and above where it would be direct?
My pleasure and happy that it helps. Remember when using the a wall or ceiling to bounce light, the ceiling or wall becomes the light source. Not the flash. And because of the size of the light source the light is soft. When using direct flash the light source is the flash. The flash head is small and therefore no matter what the zoom the light will remain hard. Hope it makes sense.
ahahah dead azz I noticed that setting since day one, but hadn't a clue how to properly use this function! I shoot a fair bit of night life/club photography, and always with an on camera speed light. This is solid advice that i will absolutely be applying. BIG UPs! 2 questions.. 1) These tips generally apply only when the speed lite is pointing straight up directly at the ceiling? 2) The height of the ceiling, coupled with the Zoom mm setting, directly affects the final image? Thanks Kobus!
Glad you enjoyed the video and that it helped you. 1) I point my flash slightly backwards rather than straight up. Straight up means straight down which ends up being "12o clock" sunlight quality of light if that makes sense. 2) Yes it does but it's not that much. It helps however to contain the light and also save battery power. You also have more control. Hope it helps ;-)

Nice video. What flash zoom should i use when use softbox? Wide or narrow?
Thank you. Depends on the size of the softbox but 35mm zoom on the flash should work for
Most.

Great work here mate! nice and simple, straight to the point and very informative!
Thank you for the kind words!
Good content, do the zoom effects the different uses of lenses or it’s just a function?
It’s a flash function that has to do with the spread width of the light.
were you ever told you resemble jack nicholson? nice tutorial though ;)
Hahaha no but I’ll take it. Hehe.
thks!!!!!
