Summary: - Spaced repetition method (aka pomodoro): Study in 20 min intervals with a 5 min break in between. One of the most effective study methods. - Can use flashcards apps like anki that use spaced repetition if its more convenient for you. But use physical flashcards when you can. - Cut flashcards in half. Full size is not necessary, - Color coat them to separate the categories. categories like subjects, or each chapter, etc. Colored the sides with a marker if you only have white ones. - One card per term. Word on one side. Brief definition in your own words simplified on the other. Check with friend to make sure your definition is not oversimplified. - Go thru them once looking at the definition side. Try to guess the word by saying it out loud before turning the card. - Separate cards in 2 piles - 'know' and 'don't know.' Be honest with yourself - don't put the card in the Know pile if you don't 100% know. - Take a break in between (remember spaced repetition) - Come back and shuffle the cards in the don't know pile and go thru them again. After another 5 min break...go thru the 'don't know's again. This time there should be very few cards in that pile. - What to do about the last "don't know" cards - try reading both sides out loud. Try writing a sentence using that word. Try reading your notes and textbook. - Wait a few days and go thru all the cards again starting from the term side this time. Remember to shuffle the cards first in case you just memorized the order. - there are new don't know cards. read out loud and follow up with cards that. you missed. read out loud and write a sentence. Have a friend test you. It's easy to say 'Oh I knew that' but in a test, you need to recall the material cold. Make sure you really know your stuff. Repeat steps when necessary. Great stuff -- Thanks! I'll use them starting today!
Thank you for this video from an old gezzzer in London that is going back to study in my 60+ year.. Not knowing where to start! This helps me know where to start in simple terms.
I've been using flash cards for 3 years and that's my advice: a card don't have to be definition and term. I often prepare 2 sided questions which are prepared to include answers to the other side. So that I see different questions referring to same topic. Lastly, your video, especially the coloring part is great. I should try coloring perhaps.
are your two question on the same side? Or do you alternate with question/answer on each side?
3 года назад+4
@@dg7438 I'll explain with an example. On one side the question is: Who was the lead vocalist of Queen? And on the other side: Which band was Freddie Mercury in?
@ thx for the reply. Just to clarify... so the answers are also on the opposite side? So on 1 side you have a question & answer (from the opposite question)?
yes. this is really effective. Ive been using this strategy since highshool and for the very first time I got the highest score in our first grading examination. Now that I enrolled again for my second course, I am still using this. You need to have more patience in writing it down on your flashcards. I tell you. its really effective.
I've found this video extremely useful, I am struggling to study English, I hope with the help of my flesh cards I can remember new words in order to expand my vocabulary. Thanks so much.
Good luck! It's so challenging learning another language. Flash cards are a great way to build your vocab for sure! We made another video about how we study languages - give it a try! bit.ly/Learn_Lang
This tip is perfect for the lessons about abstract algebra, there's a lot of definitions and to demonstrate stuff we really need to remember everything, thanks for the tips!
🍄 Two tips I have learned- 1- the cards are easier and more natural to ‘flip’ if the card is flipped bottom to top rather than left to right, which is achieved by writing the other side ‘upside down’. 2-Instead of neatly writing all of the words the same, I sometimes try to write things in an unusual way to help me remember better. For example, if I’m writing bed…I might write the letters to look like a BeD-which will hopefully stand out more in my mind.
This is such an interesting tip! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. This right here is the kind of comment that makes us want to leave the comment section open on our videos! 💜🦉
When I was doing an evening degree course on Modern Chinese I had a one and a half hour journey by coach to the college and being on a coach was not conducive to writing and reading wasn't the easiest thing so I used to drill flashcards of vocabulary. Luckily I have a "visual memory" and so it was very suitable for the following pairs of knowledge: character(s) and sound sound and English meaning character(s) and English meaning Interestingly as there are three elements to Chinese character learning: shape of character, sound associated and English meaning flashcards being binary in nature (two sides of card only) this sometimes caused problems but ... you just have to brute force it sometimes.
I am so happy I saw this video. My niece has been having difficulties studying, and I do believe after I show her this video, she will have a pleasant direction going forward. As always, I am a big fan of Socratica and your mission. A pleasure to watch.
Very helpful video. One of my school teacher once said about this type of cards. So it's an old yet effective method to learn something especially vocabbulary, definitions, terms etc.
I’m going to use this for Spanish. I got an entire large packet of homework for summer that has a bunch of vocab lists so I can be better prepared for the fall.
I actually studied with flashcards for something then watched this and some of these tips seemed similar to what I did and I remembered what I need to remember better so flashcards are really effective in general and I agree with 99% of these tips
Thank you so much, I need to pass the University's entrance exam, and there's a lot of information to remember. This helped and it's fun to make :) I remember I watched an anime in which a guy was using flashcards and it stuck on my mind, so thank you for such an amazing explanation. Truly helped a lot.
I'm trying to find out how to make FlashCards to learn four languages atthe same time. I think it'd be more useful than make specific FlashCards for each language. Cause I could associate for example a noun of that language to the other three more easier. Of course I'll take it seriously. i'm just trying to figure out what's the better way to do it with FlashCards and with 4. Cause I don't wanna lose time or money. If you know how to do it, let me know or could you make a video if possible? If not, it's ok. Anyhow, your video are great. Good luck for your channel!
FOUR languages at the same time?! Wow! This is more than we have ever attempted. We do have a little phrase book from the 50s with several languages all together. There's a column for English on the left, and then 5 columns on the right: Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Japanese. We picked it up at a used bookstore in Vancouver. It's not so much to study from, but it is very interesting to see the common roots in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. That approach might work - grouping the common languages together, but making separate flashcards for the unrelated languages. Which languages are you studying?
Yes, it's a good idea. I saw that method was called the Ramon Campayo Method but I don't know if I could be able to memorize 3/4 words or phrases in each card. So, the other way would be a word/sentence by card but the problem here is that it will be too many cards. So, or I have many many cards or I try to put 3-4 languages by card. Apart of the Pomodoro technique, I found another one very useful as well: The Leitner system. I'll use both to do it more effective. Right now I speak Spanish, Catalan, French, Portuguese and my English is good. Not perfect but I'm improving it. And I'm learning Italian, German and I started a few days ago with Russian. I also started with japanese but it was too much so I paused it. Italian is really easy to understand so it won't be hard to learn it. German is similar to English cause both comes from germanic language but I have some difficulties with Grammar. And Russian is not so hard as I thought it was. Let's see how it goes with this one. And about Japanese, to be honest I don't know if I'll continue it. We know it's a hard language to learn and I already have enough languages to learn. So, I'm not sure if I'll continue it but I love it. If I finish two of the other languages I'm learning, probably I'll give a change to Japanese. I also want to study some basic Latin, because I love it and also because it could help me with Italian and German. I just want to learn notions, not all Latin. So, except English and Japanese would be three, not four xD but I want to take it seriously, that's why I'm trying to find the easiest way to learn them at the same time. Thanks for your help!

I love this series, I wish I could donate but I'm in college.
We're so glad you are enjoying our videos! Please don't worry about donating. It would be a huge help if you would share our videos, though. Spread the word! :)
PS We'd love to hear more about how college is going and what you are studying.
Socratica thanks. college is good, especially after learning to take notes using Cornell method which I learned about thanks to you, and oh I'm studying computer science.
Aws A. That's fantastic! Keep us posted on your progress. :)
Socratica I will :)
Idk if you'll see this, but I am going to learn 800 odd mandarin characters for my GCSE exam, how do I deal with a large set like this, as your guide doesn't really say what to do if it takes longer than 20 minutes to sort through the flashcards?
