Can't tell you how much I enjoyed your video it was delivered with such love and admiration for this wonderful and under appreciated actress. For Roz and Barbara Stanwyck oh and Thelma Ritter to never win the Oscar keeps me awake at night. Thanks again for this tribute to Roz I love Gypsy and Sister Kenny especially but all your choices are spot on.
Your tribute was EXQUISITELY written and read. I've always loved Russell and your insights and descriptive of her are so insightful, endearingly kind and elegant. Fantastic video and I couldn't agree with you more and I never really knew how amazingly accomplished she was as an Actress and a 5 time Golden Globe winner too!
I think you really nailed it with the term "generous." No doubt underappreciated, Roz was a natural talent from the beginning - a talent that imporved through her c onscious hard work and tenacious commmitment to craftsmanship. Roz was a uniquely *generous* actor, to your point, and thst's easy to miss because she was *so damn good at it* Perhaps she remains under-appreciated because of that very generosity. Roz always looked great and excelled in any scene, but she made sure everyone else in the scene looked good, TOO. She nevah hammed or tried to "steal" a scene, despite being a undeniably Master Class level actor. Thank you for helping to keep Rosalind Russell's work and spitit alive. Hopefully some viewers who may not know her very well will be inspired to watch these 10 films.
I agree with everything you say about RR. There was never a part that she played that I didn't love her in. She's amazing as a comedic actress, but even the roles where she played dark characters she's completely compelling. It's a travesty that she never won an oscar. The consistency of her abilities across so many films is a testament to how great she was.
Life is a Banquet is kept in the collection of books on my bed stand. The story of the Duchess alone would put it there - but it’s her story and that has earned the spot in truth. This was a lovely retrospective. Thank you for sharing it.
I was so glad that you included Sister Kenny. I loved (and still do) that movie. And could anyone deny that her Auntie Mame is the one we all wished was ours? Of all its moments, my favorite is at the very end, when she leads Patrick's son up the stairs, weaving her spell with such mesmerizing skill that I always want to slap Patrick and Pegeen for laughing and breaking it. If ever there was a moment just to shut up and let us wallow in her genius...
Couldn't agree more....Rosalind Russell was beyond the very best!!! Perfection personified!! I have loved her and each and every character that she played ....untouchable!!
This has to have been a true labor of love for Marcus. For how else could anyone infuse this dissertation with so much love, admiration, sincerity in one's voice. Thank you for that & am looking forward to going through more of "Reportages", now that I've subscribed. + Quick note: My hairdresser Michael, Who's a Big fan of RR, made me promise to see Antie Mame in a Movie theatre for my 1st viewing. Good Call!
Loved this tribute. She so deserved it. Really a wonderful actress/comedienne/Star/singer. I suspect she was a really fine human being, too; but, of course, I never knew her. She will always be Auntie Mame to me.
Thank you for this tribute to the most underrated actress of cinema history...larger than life....funny, dramatic, poignant...so many emotions she brought to the screen. And her stage triumphs also do not get the respect they deserve.
I’m so tickled that you included The Trouble With Angels in the top 10. It’s always been one of my favorites and I think it holds up really well because the emotional underpinnings are so good. And I had no idea that Cary Grant played matchmaker for Roz!
I have watched Mame a dozen times .. yes Rosalind was brilliant.. I would have given number 2 to Gypsy … she she put the template of one of the greatest mature female rolls on film.
Yes, your favorite picks were spot on! However, if I could add one more of my own personal favorites, it would be..."The Velvet Touch." Being that I was a theater actor for many years, that film hit home for me. And not only Rosalind Russell, but the whole cast was stellar. You have a great channel here. 💫⭐I just subscribed!
Thank you so much for this. Seven years ago I bought “His Girl Friday,” blind because I knew the combination of Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell had to be great. It was perfection. On another note, do you think you’d ever be interested in doing a top ten on Anthony Perkins? I realize he has a huge filmography. It just seems that people forgot he was nominated for an Oscar for his 2nd film and that “Psycho” was him playing against type. He did eleven movies before “Psycho” and good work after. I don’t think most people even know that. I just saw one of his later movies that I had never come across, “Remember My Name.” It’s incredible and forgotten. Regardless, I love the channel. I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos. Happy New Year!
Trouble With Angels is my favorite. Very funny but an interesting, touching story too. Her performance in Picnic is outstanding. She was so great she couldn't help but almost steal the show.
I love this top 10 acting performances I hope one day you make one of Barbara Stanwyck and Irene well there lots of performers to make videos just saying. Hope you have a happy year 2025 and greetings from Argentina
Agree 💯. She will always BE Mame, but I can still watch The Women, Angels and Girl Friday over and over again. A real legend. Her appearance on What’s My Line to promote Wonderful Town was also one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen😂😂😂 I just came upon your video and never watched you before but have you ever done anything on a truly forgotten but great actress, Miriam Hopkins? Great vid though, thanks👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Oh! And, what about the musical movie “Girl Rush?” That displays some of Rosalind’s most memorable musical comedy talents. The cast in it is memorable too, as well as some of the music. And while the sequel to “Trouble With Angels” isn’t as smashing as the original movie, it has merit. The sequel provides an interesting look at how the times were changing in the 1960s. Much of those social changes have made an impact upon life today in the 21st Century. And, what about Rosalind’s last film in 1971? “Mrs. Pollifax-Spy” It’s an amazing testament to her ability as an actress/performer, that even as she had been suffering from ailments like arthritis and cancer she met the requirements of the role. Rosalind was an amazing woman. Thanks again for posting!
It's difficult for me to be objective regarding Gypsy because it was the first film I saw; I was 3 years old and overwhelmed by the experience of motion pictures. Today, I still maintain that Russell nails her portrayal of Rose and her final monologue in Gypsy is her best work on film. I would have placed His Girl Friday at the top, but I expected Auntie Mame to be number 1. My issue with Auntie Mame is that much of it lacks spontaneity and seems too worked out which can affect many stage to film adaptations. The contrast between Mame and Mother Superior is a fine example of Russell's versatility and in a way places her above many actresses who thrived on their personality alone. Thank you for this enjoyable presentation and best wishes for the new year.
Got the spelling right. My sister Eileen, that's how it's spelled. Thanks everyone for your support. As a friend of mine said " they don't make stars used to." Such words are so true. R I P. John K
Thanks for posting this wonderful tribute! Also, I read or heard somewhere that Rosalind would only take roles where the woman was a strong person. A person who was intelligent, determined and committed. Also, she liked portraying women who worked or were educated. I find it interesting that there were so many women in years past who did a lot to promote women’s rights and yet didn’t call much attention to themselves. Nor did they promote extreme liberalism either. They just did their work and made the most of their lives. Perhaps if you do a sequel to this video of Rosalind, you might explain/examine why she didn’t do the musical version of “Auntie Mame.” Just a thought! Thanks again for posting!
"Underappreciated" is an excellent word for the incredible Rosalind Russell. People tend either to love her or hate her, but her body of work defies such generalizations. So many of her movies are of the "love to hate" variety ("Gypsy," "Rosie," "Mourning Becomes Electra," "Oh, Dad, Poor Dad"), but even in her less inspired vehicles (some of which themselves are underrated) she is never not watchable. And once and for all, her husband did not buy "Gypsy" for her. (Why would David Merrick sell the show to a rival producer when obviously he'd make more money dealing directly with the studios?) She got it because producer/director Mervyn LeRoy wanted her for "A Majority of One," and she said she'd do it if he gave her "Gypsy." Also, she was at her post-"Auntie Mame" peak: if it's true that "Auntie Mame" saved Warner Bros. from the brink of bankruptcy in the late '50s, you'd think they'd be only too happy to have that film's star back for more Broadway-based extravaganzas.
I absolutely agree with your observations. I have always enjoyed Rosalind Russell even above those who were considered greatest actresses but not really greater just different. Rosalind was just as brilliant as any other actress. Another underrated was Myrna Loy. And I've decided to add another injustice I think the academy committed was in snubbing Thelma Ritter. One of the greatest supporting actress ever in my opinion.
I respect Russell for her refusal to be placed in the Supporting Actress category which, it's true, she could have won. Her rationale that she was a leading lady and wasn't ready to be relegated to character/supporting parts. A class act through and through.
I simply cannot believe that Loretta Young won for “The Farmer’s Daughter”, still. Rosalind Russell was insanely brilliant as ‘Vinnie’! ❤ me some “Mourning Becomes Electra!
The Velvet Touch was another great murder movie with her as the lead. Night must fall is a great movie for her because you are not certain of her emotions and what she will do.
I think that the actor closest to RR today would be Cate Blanchett. Cate can straddle drama and comedy, film and theatre and has a wonderful sense of comedy and slapstick with a distinctively Australian touch.
I wish you had included 1945's Roughly Speaking that she did with Jack Carson (very different role for him). It's not one of her better known films, but I've always liked it a lot. And, it's directed by Michael Curtiz - had could it be bad.
Rosalind Russell is the reason I own The Women but His Girl Friday and Auntie Mame are also my favorites of hers. No disrespect to Lucille Ball but I cannot anyone who can top Rosalind as the eccentric aunt.
IMO this raven beauty has never gotten her due as a comedy legend and great actress that she is , it like she is in the shadows which makes no sense I never see or hear her name or image being celebrated in pop culture which is a tragedy to my ears outside of Turner classic movies , for someone who brought so much color to humanity, humanity needs to change it frequency and celebrate the people who make life more colorful for us all
George Cukor insisted she could do comedy but each time she did the role he told her no.... make it CRAZIER... And George said.... THAT"S IT.

I couldn't agree with you more! The Women, His Girl Friday and Auntie Mame are among my all time favorites. Thanks Jack!
The Trouble with Angels is sublime 😇
Loved her in ‘The Women’.❤️
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Roselind Russell is the one and only Mame!
RosAlind!
You are so right 👍
You are so 👍 right

Auntie mame is one of my all time favorites 💜
Mine too! Loved it and her.

“Acting is standing up naked and turning around very slowly.” - Rosalind Russell
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree with everything you say about RR. There was never a part that she played that I didn't love her in. PICNIC! She was fantastic!
She broke my heart.
❤❤❤❤❤
PICNIC! Yes, loved her in this movie. She made so many good movies - Auntie Mame, Craig's Wife, The Women and His Girl Friday.
Life is a Banquet is kept in the collection of books on my bed stand. The story of the Duchess alone would put it there - but it’s her story and that has earned the spot in truth. This was a lovely retrospective. Thank you for sharing it.

I loved watching Rosalind Russell. The Women is my favorite classical movie.
I always take time out to watch Auntie Mame, His Girl Friday and The Women whenever I get the chance! ❤
A MAJORITY OF ONE is well worth seeing, the ending supremely touching.
She IS Mame. Did the best number in Gypsy. Played a nun, perfectly. His Girl Friday. Many other outstanding roles.
Couldn't agree more....Rosalind Russell was beyond the very best!!! Perfection personified!! I have loved her and each and every character that she played ....untouchable!!
She was a fantastic actress that deserved more recognition and attention.

Great choices.
One of the very BEST actresses EVER !!!! The only Auntie Mame and Mama Rose. Thanks, I will watch some movies I didn't know about.
Ros was rightfully proud of her comedic prowess.
I experienced the film version of GYPSY at Radio City in the fall of 62. Whenever I think of the Music Hall I think of her. She is in my Top Five.
Well done!!!❤
My Girl Friday and The Women are my favorites ! 💖
Thank you for this tribute to the most underrated actress of cinema history...larger than life....funny, dramatic, poignant...so many emotions she brought to the screen. And her stage triumphs also do not get the respect they deserve.
And easily the funniest Mystery Guest on What’s My Line EVER!
I am so glad i found your channel. I will have to check some of the movies you mentioned. She was amazing! The ONLY Auntie Mame.
I agree!🌹
My favorite actress! Omgosh. ❤️
I’m so tickled that you included The Trouble With Angels in the top 10. It’s always been one of my favorites and I think it holds up really well because the emotional underpinnings are so good. And I had no idea that Cary Grant played matchmaker for Roz!
I just watched it today! First saw it at 11 in 66? With my best friend. So good
OMG. YES, YES , YES.
I've always been warmly touched or outrageously bent over in laughter (sometimes both) by her performances.
I have watched Mame a dozen times .. yes Rosalind was brilliant.. I would have given number 2 to Gypsy … she she put the template of one of the greatest mature female rolls on film.
I'm so happy you made video about the one and only Rosalind Russell. She is worth to mention ❤ and remember!

Another one of her overlooked performances is in the film Five Finger Exercise.
Rosalyn, russell, one great lady. One great actress and always will be our auntie mame!!!!❤❤❤
Live from Fabulous Las Vegas . . . yet another beautimous show!!

Trouble With Angels is my favorite. Very funny but an interesting, touching story too. Her performance in Picnic is outstanding. She was so great she couldn't help but almost steal the show.
The second part was great and touching as well. Were Angels Go, Trouble Follows.
I love this top 10 acting performances I hope one day you make one of Barbara Stanwyck and Irene well there lots of performers to make videos just saying. Hope you have a happy year 2025 and greetings from Argentina
What a treat your videos are :)
Also, damn good actress. What a good human being giving back to the people who loved and adored her❤❤❤
She and Freddy Brisson were true Hollywood royalty. Nobody ever deserved that humanitarian Oscar more.
OMG, Michael Redgrave, wowsa!
My favorite movie she made was Mame! It always cheered me up when I was sad!!!❤
Agree 💯. She will always BE Mame, but I can still watch The Women, Angels and Girl Friday over and over again. A real legend. Her appearance on What’s My Line to promote Wonderful Town was also one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen😂😂😂

Never under-rated. Simply rhe best.
My favorite actress of all time. Favorite film of mine Rosie. Can't find on video. Made in the 60s.
Based on a play called A Very Rich Woman.
I still know all the words to all the songs from My Sister Eileen er Wonderful Town!!
The trouble with angels was the first movie I saw her in. Love at first sight

I loved her as Sylvia Fowler in The Women and as Rosemary Sydney in Picnic💖💖💖
Never Wave at a WAC is hilarious. One of her best! Reminds me of Goldie Hawn's performance in Private Benjamin.

She is my daughter's favorite actress.
Roz was the best. She deserves the Oscar many times and should have been nominated for more roles. I watch her films this time of year.
Got the spelling right. My sister Eileen, that's how it's spelled. Thanks everyone for your support. As a friend of mine said " they don't make stars used to." Such words are so true. R I P. John K
We need a top 10 of Geraldine Page and Ann Bancroft
Ohhhhhhhhh Yes...Stay Tuned :)

She was offered the musical when it was being written but 30:51 she turned it down saying I don't eat last weeks stew.
The Women is one of my favorite movies!🎦
What ever happened to "Rosie!", the comedy/drama she made in the late 60s? I loved that one as a kid and it has never been released since.
I love Roz! She made a great nun in The Trouble with Angels, and was masterful as Rose in Gypsy! (such an unfairly underrated film...)
Auntie Mame and mother superior in the trouble with angels and where angels go, trouble follows are my personal favorites.
Three: "Mame
Mame
Mame"
❤❤❤❤❤❄️✨💍💎💠

"Get'em at Gimballs!" Rosiland Russell is in the top 5 greatest actresses of all time! Bar none!
Gimbels (NYC department store, 1910-1986)

A list for Ginger Rogers please. The Major And The Minor is my favorite.
I simply cannot believe
that Loretta Young won for “The Farmer’s Daughter”, still.
Rosalind Russell was
insanely brilliant as
‘Vinnie’! ❤ me some
“Mourning Becomes
Electra!
Be sure to see her as the mystery guest on "what's my Line" from 1953.
My favs are in a bit different order...1 - Auntie Mame, 2 - Picnic, 3 Girl Rush, 4 - The Trouble With Angels.
One great Came. Equally good in comedy and drama. Yes Aunt MAME and Rose.
Night Must Fall is fantastic. Dame may whitty.
I wore out 2 VHS tapes of "AUNTIE MAME"!
God I love her in The Women.
I also would have included Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows as either honorable mention or number 10.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Velvet Touch was another great murder movie with her as the lead. Night must fall is a great movie for her because you are not certain of her emotions and what she will do.
Check out Roz on What's my Line? Jan '53 She was great!
Thanks for that info. I just watched it. She was fabulous!
Do BETTY GRABLE
Rosalind Russell is the reason I own The Women but His Girl Friday and Auntie Mame are also my favorites of hers. No disrespect to Lucille Ball but I cannot anyone who can top Rosalind as the eccentric aunt.
We need a top 10 Maggie Smith
She also gives an amazing performance in Rosie, one of her ladt.fklmd.
Last films
IMO this raven beauty has never gotten her due as a comedy legend and great actress that she is , it like she is in the shadows which makes no sense I never see or hear her name or image being celebrated in pop culture which is a tragedy to my ears outside of Turner classic movies , for someone who brought so much color to humanity, humanity needs to change it frequency and celebrate the people who make life more colorful for us all
Mourning suits Electra!
She should have won for Mame.
Shes the only one i see in that part
"Flight for Freedom" missing "the list" is unacceptable, sir! "Honorable mention", indeed!
George Cukor insisted she could do comedy but each time she did the role he told her no.... make it CRAZIER... As you say after about 8 tries she got sick of it and thought "He wants crazy, I'll give him crazy" And she did the most ridiculous, gum chewing, bug eyed, fast talking maniac she could. And George said.... THAT"S IT.
❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😢
I hated her in " Picnic . Liked her very much in " The Women "
She did an underrated drama called "The Velvet Touch." The first scene is overheated, but the rest is first-rate.
Ann-Margret was up for Mama Rose? I think you meant she was up for Natalie Wood's role. I think HIS GIRL FRIDAY is easily Russell's best. I'm the only person I know who doesn't like AUNTIE MAME. The whole thing is so flatly directed by theatre veteran Morton DaCosta with awkward staging and everybody playing to the rafters. The only performance I liked was Coral Browne as Vera Charles. Somehow she knew how to make an outrageous character also seem like a real person.
Sorry. BUT MY FAVORITE IS Auntie MAME
Rosalind was great but I dislike your list.
