I love you guys , this is the only time I wish I didn't smash 3 pints , the effort to keep up with the "technicals" without shiny pop up animations is hard
I was shocked when the bonnet closed first time, I also have seen Phil with his Jag swap drive fine and several LS swapped MX5's but a V10 I wonder if that may be a chassis twister?
I love how Mike keeps getting excited about the progress and minimising the amount of work left to do, and gets quietly shut down every time with how much more there actually is left to do 😂
the secret is to have made progress months ago, edit, then post months later. Nothing wrong with the strat! Glad they’re doing that and not leaving us high & dry until the next episode
Aaah I remember the bonnet closing moment from our 1UZ mx5 build.. This is looking like a great swap! Noticed you mentioned ancillaries like power steering in the last video. The option we went with was a Holden Astra power steering pump in the boot. Really cheap way to power the factory rack.
Funny, I miss Hammond and May a little less everyday... Not that I wouldn't like to see an appearance, mind you. But I used to be like, "eh, well, it's not them, but I'll watch it I guess." Now I just look forward to seeing Drive Tribe. You guys are doing a stellar job of making Drive Tribe it's own thing, rather than TG 3.0.
I only just found this channel and didn't even know that Hammond and May are involved with it. I'd be happy if they never come back - they talk too much. I like the pace of these Mazda episodes.
go electric power steering , that will free up a fair bit of under bonnet space. Also there's plenty of aftermarket bigger gearbox tunnels available for the mk2 Escorts that could be of use
@@Gentleman...Driver not if it was a programmable one it wouldn't. Also, the additional weight that V10 adds up-front would likely drastically alter the way it feels/handles already... losing some hydraulic weight would no doubt address some of these issues
@@TML34 Seriously? With propper allignment, propper settings to the suspension, the NAs are gold in that regard. I cant even comprehent how wrong your statement is. Sorry, I dont want to offend you.
It’s May 25, 2024 and I just saw guys from the Build It Yourself channel finally start a 4v 6.8L engine. Is Drivetribe aware of that build? It seems like something you would be interested in.
Do a dry sump for better clearance and a slight HP increase, then do a narrowed corvette rear transmission to better distribute the weight and make the transmission tunnel easier to modify by only needing a torque tube going from the engine back to the rear end and transmission.
Watching this is brilliant. Always wanted to do something like this, but with my health, not a chance. So excited to live it through these videos. Would absolutely love to actually see this when finished.
Great progress! 🎉 i have a suggestion for the cooling! The engine will take upp most of the space in the front. So why not put a big radiator in the boot? You can duckt the air from bellow and out the back. I have seen it on many other builds. 😄
This is THEE daftest, but most interesting engine swap I've seen on RUclips! I'm genuinely excited to see the finished car. Its going to handle awfully, but it's a BMW V10 Mazda MX5 lol 😂
I just wonder how much you are changing the car dynamics by adding a 240kg engine at the front! How are you going to deal with this issue? Very brave of you to do such a project. Can't wait for the next episode!
I'm not an mx5 fan but I'm loving these videos, shoehorning a V10 in that thing is gonna make it mental. Be interesting to see how it handles once your done, I wonder how the weight distribution will be different. I'd love to see a subtle bump on the bonnet. Nothing to radical but just a nod as to whats underneath it
Produced by the japanese, powered by the Germans , with a sprinkle of American viper inspiration and finally built by some mad British buggers......... Now that's either one messed up family tree or a recipe for the biggest smile. Well done guys this is mental and I love it!
Not bad. Some 30 years ago our employer (Tom's Tyres in Australia) we put a blown 454 in a series 2a landie & ran it at drags We ran 9.76 at Ravenswood Raceway
My favourite type of car is the one which doesn't look fast, and shouldn't go fast, but just destroys everthing which steps up. Props to your previous employer!
I can’t wait to see the weight distribution and how the handling is affected and the power and torque curve and how the tyres are going to handle. Should be fun. Will be great to compare the 2.0 VR10 as well.
I'm sure this won't affect the perfect 50 - 50 weight distribution at all. The factory tire pressure of 2.0 bar all around is still fine, it's not like there's an elephant sitting on the bonnet. Likewise, the Scottish accent is a perfect match for the Nigel Mansell simp stache.
I am not a mechanic but enjoy these type of builds. Curious if the oil pump, brake master cylinder, clutch cylinder, windshield washer reservoir, battery and other accessories could not be moved to the boot (trunk) to make more room in engine bay? Would also aid a wee bit with weight distribution
I mean in the sense that anything is possible *maybe* but realistically no, your master cylinders can be remote mounted but thats quite a distance and the oil pumps well you really want them as close as the engine as possible to avoid leaks. Washer, battery and alike could be rear mounted in the boot but you'd still have to put your mechanical accessories in the engine bay ie Alternator.
loving the project/s. great content. luv from Australia. hope these suggestion might help. to make more space in the engine bay you could use electric power steering pump which you could mount anywhere you like. same with the A/C. these would weigh less than the engine driven units. for cabin cooling/heating maybe mount Peltier effect plates in the air box? you could also reach out to people who have swapped this engine into other cars and they may have a custom sump set up you could use or butcher, sorry, modify to fit.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting car to drive..Weight distribution is going to need sorting out as the handling will be otherwise somewhat difficult.. Many years ago someone fitted a D-Type Jag engine into a Austin Healy bug eye sprite (the car ended up in Oz), and just recently a Aussie youtuber has fitted up a Ferrari V8 into a 105 series Alfa Romeo GTV. So i guess putting a BMW V10 into a MX5 is no less daft 🤣🤣
You cut up the engine compartment to fit the V10. But, shouldn't you also beef up the propsed areas on the subframe where the engine mounts will go and the subframes connections to the body to handle the much higher power and torque that the V10 will produce?
I reckon a bubble window in the bonnet to show off that V10 would be nice. I would like to show off my engine if it were me. However, I guess it depends if you are going for that stealth look. Surely the noise alone will give it away. :) Can't wait to see how this progresses.
I have to wonder how this will handle and what the weight distribution will be like with an engine so much larger and heavier than what it was designed to have. I'm sure it will take a lot people by surprise at a stoplight, not so sure about the cornering. I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.
@@mattcook3801 agreed, but it would be a lot more manageable with less nose weight. Especially since this is going to be a track car. Balance is critical
@@thatbikerboy19 so does it drive? I wonder why they dont make any videos about it. 10 months is a long time especially because we got hyped up so much
I think you should do a third in this series: VW 2.5 i5 CBT/CBU EA855 (07K). You get the same V10 sound from the I5, but much smaller, much cheaper, much simpler and more parts availability. It would be a "V10 at home" version that us viewers could realistically hope to duplicate.
Ah, just noticed that the I5 was exclusive to the Americas and Middle East. You could still import one relatively cheaply, but may be better to go with the 2.3 20V VR5 AQN/AZX. Won't have the same sound of the V10 like the I5 does, but close, and pretty sweet all the same.
A modern day Cobra? If it works. Will you be detailing how many hours it actually takes the team and what the labour cost would normally be for the project?

Should of put that engine in an rx8😅
That is about 3% of the job done so far.

As he should be. This has barely scraped the surface of the amount of work needed to get this to work
It must be his first engine swap. We all start out with enthusiasm and excitement. He'll learn.
The frequency of these videos is insane. Thanks for cranking them out.

You should convert the engine to a dry sump instead of a wet sump to make the motor sit lower.
Yes!
100% this
Thought exactly the same.
Maybe also find a way of putting the rads rearwards too?
Yes I have seen that a few times with LS swaps.
Great idea, I believe that would make their oil cooling solution more effective as well
i came to the comments to say this exact thing!
Driftworks have one laying around! They could not use it for their E46 V10

But you just know they will make it work.
go electric power steering , that will free up a fair bit of under bonnet space. Also there's plenty of aftermarket bigger gearbox tunnels available for the mk2 Escorts that could be of use
They said they didnt want to alter how the MX5 handles and feels. So installing an electric power steering would totally mess up this goal.

Loving this build.. just hope that there is enough room for sear from the monster transmission tunnel. Going to be tight. But a worthy build.
