He's such an inventive guitarist. Every solo he does inspires and gives you new ideas to try, new melodies to incorporate. All guitarists should study Derek.
This is the Hydra Burst Les Paul ...9-1880 we believe that now belongs to Billy Squier ....Derek had it out on loan from its previous owner ....Spencer Kirkpatrick a fine player owned it years ago and played it with Hydra !!
This is so true! I've improved a lot while studying Derek. He's melodic ideas are unique and soulful both with and without a slide. He truly sounds like a singer with his vibrato and note selection.
thank you for posting this. i've been wantinb to see/hear dt on a paul for a long time..and i knew he was playing them more lately. what an amazing solo...so soulful! perfect!
For anyone who cares, this is the guitar in the video: burstserial. com/gallery/main.php?cmd=album&var1=1959%2F9+1880%2F&var2=2 The video doesn't show the flame very well but the markings below the tailpiece are clear indicators.
I know its serial number is 9-1880 and that it was on loan to him from Spencer Kirkpatrick, so I'm not completely sure if he bought it from him or not. Point is, thats a 59 burst, not a gold top like some people on here suggested. Really cool guitar!
@dahudge14 You can't really tell the year just by looking at it, but most 1959 bursts are easily recognizable because there are so few so most of them are pretty famous. It's pretty much the only Les Paul he'll bring out to play most of the time.
Well he almost never uses a pick, and to give certain notes that extra omph, he actually sort of rakes all the strings, muting all of em, except the one he wants to play.
@ferrarimk13 But you can't tell by the color or something? Or are you just assuming that he's a badass, and he was probably gifted with a guitar given to badasses? I love the honey bursts btw :D
Do they make humbuckers that look like P90s or somethin? Its totally throwing me off i thought P90s are rectangular and humbuckers are thin (at least they are on my fender)
I saw a picture of Duane posing with both the Tobacco and the Cherry LP on a table, so maybe he didnt trade them.. or one of them is someone else's guitar.. well doesn't really matter I think hehehe
Hrm now this sounds alot more like when I play slide on my fender, although I see hes still using p90s but it doesn't sound as warm as his collection of SG's, can anyone explain why?
Bobby ''ace'' could learn some slide work from derek because he never was that good of a slide player even though he taught himself onstage back in '79 and boy was that tough on the ear's.
Would have loved to Garcia's face standing next to him while he was playing this. Would have been grinning ear to ear.

oh yes, amen, this rocks completely, i've never heard this song as beautiful, would have loved to hear him jam with Jerry doing this
thank you for posting this. i've been wantinb to see/hear dt on a paul for a long time..and i knew he was playing them more lately.
what an amazing solo...so soulful! perfect!
That was beautiful. Kid kills it on any guitar just about. He has to be one of the most talented players, if not the, in the world.
The viewer before me was the 66,666 th to play this. Was that you satan, taking in some RatDog with Derek Trucks, in Red Rocks?
I want more of this video.... thank you so much for posting - I am addicted to this particular RUclips video.
When every note counts!
derek trucks should use a les paul more!! what a awesome sound! derek trucks kick ass!!!!!!
every guitar player is a collector
Even with a different guitar and a little different sound... close your eyes and you know exactly who's playing.
Oh no doubt!
loser is such a sick song

this makes ratdog listenable.
GUITAR GOD!!! Can't wait for Thursday
All right who missed the like button? Because there is no way someone could not appreciate this!!!
@dahudge14 i could tell by its color. Most 1959 bursts have unique finishes that could help you identify them (by player usually).
would LOVE to "see/Hear" this whole performance always Loved Loser anyone Kow where I could get it from?

This is the first time I've ever seen him playing one.
Yeah. I've seen him playing a lot of Danelectro guitars, and the National Airline guitars. They were built for the style that he plays.
Buddy of Sonny.. With Sonny one of the Best!
amazing guitar slide.....
holy tone control batman!!!!!!

Derek Trucks is such an amazing player, Jerry would've liked this alot. Standing on the Moon.
Well he almost never uses a pick, and to give certain notes that extra omph, he actually sort of rakes all the strings, muting all of em, except the one he wants to play.
@ferrarimk13

I love the honey bursts btw :D
Who would have thunk, Butches son the guitarist extraordinaire
That looks like his PRS head right behind him.
sick fucken Deal. thank you Derek.
@Ratsonic. Derek is Butch Trucks' nephew not his son. His dad is Butch's brother.
Hey thanks man for clearin that up
Interesting to see him without his SG.
@InfinityOE Hey, this link doesn't work but I would love to download the track/whole show
@ferrarimk13 Really, thats the best looking real 59 I have seen. Your saying thats his REAL 1959 burst? I believe he has one but thats perfect shape.
Do they make humbuckers that look like P90s or somethin? Its totally throwing me off i thought P90s are rectangular and humbuckers are thin (at least they are on my fender)
@jsl209 It sounds like a jam in Loser to me
lp looks gold top..
Not sure on that, but Duane's ex-Goldtop belongs to Dickey Betts since his passing. Is that right?
how do u know he has a 59? thats great but he would of had to recently acquired it.
I concur... its a honeyburst or teaburst, and i cant see any flame or quilt.
interesting he's using the bridge pickup for "Loser"
He's using Open E tuning and usually stays there.
Thats his 1959 burst, such a beautiful guitar, and he deserves it.
That's not his it was on loan
@jsl209 Really!!!! That guitar is a REAL 59' and is DUANE ALLMANS? I believe you its just in immaculate shape for its age.
@ferrarimk13
How are you able to tell the year?
wait.. thats an original 59 burst?
I saw a picture of Duane posing with both the Tobacco and the Cherry LP on a table, so maybe he didnt trade them.. or one of them is someone else's guitar.. well doesn't really matter I think hehehe
Anyone know the name of this jam?
What's the date of the show
Yea, serial number 9 1880
Derek sounds fine with this LP, I don't know why all the hate
who else? :D I believe that that Goldtop Dickey uses up to this day, is the same Duane Allman used. Anyone knows if that's true?
@Danjd1 Thanks. I never noticed that. Haha.
he sounds better with the SG. this however is still godly
defininitely Loser jam
@Ratsonic Derek is his nephew.
yeah, looks like it
@InfinityOE name of the song please!
Hrm now this sounds alot more like when I play slide on my fender, although I see hes still using p90s but it doesn't sound as warm as his collection of SG's, can anyone explain why?
Those aren’t P90’s dude
That doesn't sound like his usual Open E Tuning. Does anybody know what it is?
What are you talking about? Yes it does and of course it is
thats a nice 59
What is the date
You mean Duane Allman?
Word going around the les paul forum says its a reall 1959 les paul and derek trucks owns it .
reissue or the real deal?
both
1959 burst
@ferrarimk13 i doubt he would play a 59" outdoors
What is this song called?
Loser by the good ol’ Grateful Dead.
@donnymiller1978 He's a guitar player not a collector, he gets use out of it even outdoors I'm sure.
@donnymiller1978 That place is out west and dry as shit what would stop him?
@willeng84 It's Duane's!
lol.... its derek trucks
john mcain lookin ass in the background at the begining
DEREK TRUCKS IS EASILY THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER THAT EVER WALKED ON A RATDOG STAGE. WEIR JUST COULD NOT PUT TOGETHER A GOOD BAND AFTER KINGFISH SPLIT UP
notice how he plays the harmonic at 1:05. rediculous.
I'm talking about this GT here watch?v=G1jpQu6qR1E
SeemsDicky uses another one sometimes.
Bobby ''ace'' could learn some slide work from derek because he never was that good of a slide player even though he taught himself onstage back in '79 and boy was that tough on the ear's.
his slide playing these days is pretty nice, actually...
59 or not -this guitar doesn´t sound too good for me. At least on this vid.
Derek sounds much better with his SG´s!
@grantbeavers thanks
