Just saw them in concert at Red Rocks this summer. Had the same reaction. Susan is amazing but had a way deeper appreciation for the whole band, Mike specifically.
Derek gets it. Like all great musicians, you pick up the music where the masters left it and take it where it has never been before with a respectful tip of the hat and you put you stamp on it. Derek is the new master.
Actually you grow up playing the blues with a slide since you’re 4 years old then go off and learn Indian classical music and rhythm and you’ll get close

Bingo! First time I saw him was right after he was formally introduced as a member of the ABB and I stood about 20' from the stage and could barely breathe - I was more or less turned into a pillar of salt, watching him play. I was simply not prepared for the perfection and nuance and the focus of the power that was pouring out of his fingers. Everyone sings praises of his slide technique, while I'm over here in awe of his right hand technique. He's like Knopfler in terms of fingerpicking precision.
I’ve always said that. He strums like no one I’ve ever seen. I’m guessing cause he started so young his hands were too small so he developed a style his hands could do ☺️
I love the moment when he's all fire and lightning and you think, "Wait. How did we get here? A moment ago it was all quiet and thoughtful. How in the holy hell did he do that?" Amazing.
He plays with such purity in every note and color and is able to express the widest range possible of every note than anyone I've ever seen and heard in my entire music life. It's so pure it's as if God just placed this kid on this planet as a beautiful gift for us to experience...maybe he felt bad taking Vaughn, Garcia, Dimebag Darrell, Becker, Hendrix, JJ Cale

Derek Truck’s musical expression is a blessing. He invokes such good emotions, plays guitar passages like a gospel singer, and brings in the rock, indian, blues, jazz. Everyday i heard Derek playing guitar is a good day.
Derek carries on the musical tradition of his Uncle Butchy and his 2 band mates of that generation. I dare say Derek does it just, if not better, than his forefathers! Lets just say my heart soars as high.
I love how he often plays soft at the climax of a phrase. It like when someone is speaking in a normal tone and then just when you think they are going to yell or shout to make their point...they whisper and the words and moment are branded in your memory forever. I've got to see him live.

The funny thing is he doesn't look anywhere near 81! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Derek is simply one of the finest guitar players alive. So much heart in every note... you can't teach that - you either have it or you don't..
Could not agree with you more...He defines perfection.

Mike who? Why is his full name?
The intro of this is so very influenced by his study of Indian classical music.
Heard it right away
I was thinking exactly that. Sounds almost like he's playing a sitar
Yes, indeed 😉
I think Derek Trucks is one of the greatest, most sensitive interpreters of the guitar EVER! Love everything about how he plays.
All that feeling and no fucking weird faces, he doesn't even move and has got more soul than all those Guitar Center former winners
thanks, those faces them guys Make are just crazy.
He's brilliant - who needs weird faces, image, stage-presence, charisma
You hit it right on the head, eureka, I found the answer that boy got soul. I am going to steal that soul phrase and use it to describe Derek Trucks!
I agree, it's nice to see. That being said, if you play blues guitar you'll know how natural and unconscious it is to make some of those faces.
This is just God given talent so grateful I got the 💜 privilege of living during his time and I'm currently 62 years old
